The exploration of bioactive peptides derived from diverse food sources demonstrates their potential to provide advantages beyond basic nutrition, such as immunological support, antibacterial activities, and chronic disease management. This review examines the antidiabetic and antibacterial characteristics of peptides originating from animals, plants, and edible insects. These peptides help manage blood glucose by blocking enzymes and increasing insulin absorption, making them a viable alternative to standard drugs with none or fewer side effects. Antimicrobial peptides work by damaging bacterial membranes. Despite their potential, challenges such as bioavailability, stability, and safety need to be addressed for their integration into functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Solid state fermentation (SSF) involves the growth of microorganisms especially filamentous fungi on moist solid substrates in the absence of free-flowing water. SSF offers a more favorable environment for fungal growth, yielding higher productivity in a relatively low-cost process by using nutrient-rich agro-industrial residues as substrates. With the increasing interest in SSF nowadays, researchers are keen to discover as many new ways to explore the usage of this technology as possible to develop new added-value materials from by-products. In addition to nutritional composition of solid substrate used for SSF medium, physical properties of solid substrate also represent another important idea to be focused on during SSF that will influence the behavior and the productivity of microorganisms involved for substrate utilization and product formation. The main objective of this reported article was to study solid substrate particles and their physical characteristics in relation to SSF, analyzing how of these characteristics vary with different solid substrate particles and moisture contents. The importance of physical properties, such as bulk density, particle density, specific volume, porosity, particle size, surface area, volumetric specific surface area, water retention value (WRV) and tortuosity, was identified in this study. This primary information can be advantage in the microbial SSF process to be carried out. © 2019 Bio Tech System.

This article introduces the EU Horizon 2020 research project MIX-UP, "Mixed plastics biodegradation and upcycling using microbial communities". The project focuses on changing the traditional linear value chain of plastics to a sustainable, biodegradable based one. Plastic mixtures contain five of the top six fossil-based recalcitrant plastics [polyethylene (PE), polyurethane (PUR), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polystyrene (PS)], along with upcoming bioplastics polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and polylactate (PLA) will be used as feedstock for microbial transformations. Consecutive controlled enzymatic and microbial degradation of mechanically pre-treated plastics wastes combined with subsequent microbial conversion to polymers and value-added chemicals by mixed cultures. Known plastic-degrading enzymes will be optimised by integrated protein engineering to achieve high specific binding capacities, stability, and catalytic efficacy towards a broad spectrum of plastic polymers under high salt and temperature conditions. Another focus lies in the search and isolation of novel enzymes active on recalcitrant polymers. MIX-UP will formulate enzyme cocktails tailored to specific waste streams and strives to enhance enzyme production significantly. In vivo and in vitro application of these cocktails enable stable, self-sustaining microbiomes to convert the released plastic monomers selectively into value-added products, key building blocks, and biomass. Any remaining material recalcitrant to the enzymatic activities will be recirculated into the process by physicochemical treatment. The Chinese-European MIX-UP consortium is multidisciplinary and industry-participating to address the market need for novel sustainable routes to valorise plastic waste streams. The project's new workflow realises a circular (bio)plastic economy and adds value to present poorly recycled plastic wastes where mechanical and chemical plastic recycling show limits.

Tannins are a type of organic compound commonly found in various plant-based foods and beverages. The majority of species in the plant kingdom comprise tannins, which serve as a defense against predators. Tannins also play a role in regulating plant growth and development, while having a protective function against ultraviolet radiation. The phenolic structure of tannins has also the potential to be used in food, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries. Tannins exhibit a high level of biological activity. Therefore, a number of advantages such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-allergic, and antimicrobial properties, have been verified in recent research. Thus, they are widely used in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and food industries. In addition, the use of tannins as film and coating matrices, antimicrobial and antioxidant agents can enhance the quality of food. However, extraction and purification of tannins are challenging owing to their strong polarity, large molecular weight and complicated structure. Various advanced methods can be employed for the extraction and purification of tannins, depending on the source material and desired application, including solvent extraction, chromatographic methods, super critical, ionic liquid assisted microwave, infrared-assisted extraction technique etc. In particular, supercritical fluid extraction, using CO₂ under specific pressure and temperature conditions, is gaining popularity due to its eco-friendliness and efficiency. This review presents structure and classification of tannins, their extraction techniques, potential properties of tannins as a preservative agent and possible health benefits of tannins with clinical trials. © 2025 The Author(s)

The concentrated solar-driven pyrolysis of biomass (sawdust) was examined in a fluidized bed reactor with 0.15 mI.D. and 0.3 m bed height, using cristobalite sand as bed material. The fluidized bed a reactor was fitted with in-bed tubes, filled with a phase change material with phase change temperature of 450 to 475°C. Four, 5 and 9 tube-inserts were examined. The solution with 5 tube-insert was experimentally demonstrated to considerably influence the bubble sizes and frequencies in the reactor, leading to an enhanced heat transfer from the irradiated reactor wall to the fluidized bed, and from the fluidized bed to the in-bed tubes. The steam assisted pyrolysis produced between 40 and 55 wt% of high-quality biochar (BET $\gg 100 m^{2}$/g), about 20 to 25 wt% of oxygenated bio-oil and the balance as syngas. The operation at moderate temperature and with steam injection drives the pyrolysis reactor towards biochar production. In using the PCM-ballasted inserts, the temperature could be narrowly controlled within the selected operation range, whereas it was also possible to maintain the temperature at the required level for 15 to 20 minutes during non-sun periods.

The global water crisis necessitates innovative solutions for sustainable potable water production. Solar stills represent a promising technology for harnessing solar energy to meet this demand. However, solar stills often face limitations regarding yield and cost-effectiveness. This research addresses the pressing need to augment the performance of solar stills by introducing amendments such as utilizing black-coated metal scrap as a photothermal absorber in the absorber basin. These modifications aim to boost the absorption of solar radiation, thereby increasing potable water yield and improving the system's economic viability. The study explores the utilization of black-coated metal scrap as a photothermal absorber to modify the absorber basin. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in potable water yield, with a 129.85% increase on day 1 and 127.21% on day 2, reaching 3080 mL/m2 and 3090 mL/m2, respectively. Compared to conventional solar stills, the newly developed double slope solar still with an absorber basin featuring metal scrap exhibits a remarkable economic advantage, with a payback period (PBP) of 5.4 months, as opposed to 9.45 months for the traditional system. Additionally, the cost per liter (CPL) of potable water generated by the innovative system is 75.53% lower than that of the conventional solar still system © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

1.25 – 5% graphene oxide (GO) containing ι-carrageenan – urea hydrogels were converted to high surface area carbon with hierarchical porous structure. The effect of the reduced GO (rGO) of these N, S-doped carbons was studied in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and in electrochemical Li-ion storage application. Although the volatile thermal degradation products of GO affected the porous texture and the surface chemistry in a complex way, the rGO residue resulted in a monotonically increasing electrical conductivity of the carbon obtained. While the highest porosity was achieved with 2.5% GO (SBET 1780 m2/g and V0.98=1.7 cm3/g), the highest surface charge and gravimetric capacity in alkaline ORR reaction was observed with the 1.25% sample. It showed the advantageous 4e- mechanism, but the incorporated GO deteriorated the stability of the electrode in all the samples. In the Li-ion battery tests the coulombic efficiency of all the samples was consistently above 98%, indicating the great potential of such carbons for efficient Li-ion insertion and reinsertion during the charge-discharge process, thereby providing a promising alternative for graphite-based anodes. The cell from the 1.25% sample also showed the lowest impedance, an initial discharge capacity of 313 mAh/g and 95.1% capacity retention after 50 charge-discharge cycles. © 2022, The Authors. A study was undertaken to collect and identify saprobic fungi associated with Musa spp.(banana)from Taiwan(China),and *** were collected during the dry season and their morpho-molecular relationships were *** brown pleosporalean hyphomycetous taxa in Periconiaceae and Torulaceae *** cortaderiae,***,Torula chromolaenae,***,and *** were identified for the first time from Musa spp.(Musaceae).Phylogenetic analyses of a combined SSU,LSU,ITS,RPB2 and TEF DNA sequence dataset further justified the taxonomic placements of these five taxa in the above mentioned *** delonicis is reported for the first time on a monocotyledonous host and *** is the first geographical record from Taiwan(China).
