The rapid control of sonar-guided vehicles through obstacle fields has been a goal of robotics for decades. How sensory data is represented strongly affects how obstacles and goal information can be combined to select a direction of travel. While typical approaches combine attractive and repulsive effects to directly determine steering, we are investigating an algorithm that evaluates multiple directions simultaneously followed by a winner-take-all (WTA) function which then guides steering. In this paper we describe a neuromorphic VLSI implementation of this algorithm using the inherent echo delay to create a range-dependent gain in a 'race-to-first-spike' neural WTA circuit. The chip was fabricated in a commercially-available 0.5 mum CMOS process and in this paper we present preliminary test results

The total dose radiation response of nitrided and nonnitrided n-type 4H-SiC is reported for metal oxide semiconductor capacitors exposed to 10-keV X-rays under positive bias. The radiation response is affected strongly by differences in the SiC band gap and interface/near interface SiO2 trap density from typical Si MOS devices. Significantly higher net trapped positive charge densities were observed in nitrided n-SiC MOS capacitors compared to the non-nitrided samples. The mechanisms contributing to the differences in the charge trapping in these devices are discussed. Differences in the interfacial layer between SiO2/Si and SiO2/SiC are responsible for the observed dissimilarities in charge trapping behavior. © 2006 IEEE.

Continuous multiday broadband neural data provide a means for observing effects at fine timescales over long periods. In this paper we present analyses on such data sets to demonstrate neural correlates for physically active and inactive time periods, as defined by the response of a head-mounted accelerometer. During active periods, we found that 5-25 Hz local field potential (LFP) power was significantly reduced, firing rate variability increased, and firing rates have greater temporal correlation. Using a single threshold fit to LFP power, 93% of the 403 5 minute blocks tested were correctly classified as active or inactive (as labeled by thresholding each block's maximal accelerometer magnitude). These initial results motivate the use of such data sets for testing neural prosthetics systems and for finding the neural correlates of natural behaviors. © 2006 IEEE.

Chronically implanted electrode arrays have enabled a broad range of advances, particularly in the field of neural prosthetics. Those successes motivate development of prototype implantable prosthetic processors for long duration, continuous use in freely behaving subjects. However, traditional experimental protocols have provided limited information regarding the stability of the electrode arrays and their neural recordings. In this paper we present preliminary results derived from long duration neural recordings in a freely behaving primate which show variations in action potential shape and RMS noise across a range of time scales. These preliminary results suggest that spike sorting algorithms can no longer assume stable neural signals and will need to transition to adaptive signal processing methodologies to maximize performance. ©2006 IEEE.

We demonstrate, for the first time, micromechanical detection of the neurotransmitter dopamine and its discrimination from ascorbic acid. Microcantilever sensors were fabricated and coated with the polysaccharide chitosan by electrodeposition. The cantilevers were used for electrochemical oxidation of dopamine solution. The products of this reaction crosslink the chitosan film and create a tensile stress, bending the cantilever out of plane considerably. By contrast, electrochemical oxidation of ascorbic acid solution does not cause chitosan crosslinking and appreciable cantilever bending. This method is an improvement over conventional electrochemical dopamine detection techniques (e.g. cyclic voltammetry) that are highly non-specific. © 2006 Society for Chemistry and Micro-Nano Systems.

The steady national decline in women engineering students persists despite a plethora of programs and camps at engineering colleges around the country aimed at attracting girls into engineering and technical fields.1Discussions about this decline often suggest that influential cultural, media and marketing images may affect girls' career choices in ways that steer girls in directions other than engineering. When planning the first-ever overnight engineering camp for high school girls hosted at Boise State University, the planning team decided to embrace marketing methods to create realistic images about engineering that are relevant to the lives of girls. The planning team represented a partnership among Micron Technology, the southwest Idaho Society of Women Engineers section, Boise public school staff, and Boise State University faculty, staff and graduate students. The team defined four messages that formed the foundation for curriculum development and communications with prospective participants: 1) Engineers help the world;2) Engineers think creatively;3) Engineers enjoy working with other people;and 4) Engineers earn a good living. Demand for the "e-Girls" camp far exceeded expectations, and student evaluations at the end of the program indicated success at affecting the girls' understanding, perceptions and interest about engineering careers. The program will continue in 2006. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

This paper analyzes the effect of custom error control schemes on the energy efficiency in Bluetooth sensor networks. The energy efficiency metric considers in just one parameter the energy and reliability constraints of the wireless sensor networks. New packet types are introduced using some error control strategies in the AUX1 packet, such as Hamming and BCH codes, with and without CRC for error detection. Two adaptive techniques are proposed that change the error control strategy based on the number of hops traversed by a packet through the network. The performance results are obtained through simulations in a channel with Rayleigh fading for networks with different number of hops, showing that error control can improve the energy efficiency of a Bluetooth-based sensor network.

This presentation builds on panel discussions that began at the ASEE 2004 National Conference and continued at the 2005 Conference. Our focus is on promoting diversity in engineering education, with an emphasis on graduate education. This paper serves as a summary and introduction to this session, which is co-sponsored by three ASEE divisions-the Graduate Division, Women in engineering Division, and Minorities in engineering Division. In previous years, we presented evidence of the need for diversity in engineering education to promote the national good. We discussed specific issues of concern for promoting diversity in graduate engineering education. We outlined an overall strategy for achieving diversity in engineering education in general and in graduate engineering education in particular, based on a holistic model applicable to both education and industry. Now our goal is to identify best practices which can help to implement this strategy and to disseminate these practices to a broad audience. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

Calf skeletal muscle pump activity is essential for maintaining adequate venous and interstitial fluid flows in the dependent body. Correspondingly, failure of this extracorporeal pump leads to a host of acute and chronic physiological complications. The focus of this study is to assess the calf muscle pump contractility, more specifically through analysis of soleus muscle firing dynamics, in supine and seated positions, utilizing vibromyography (VMG). We have extended our previous investigations which relied on Fourier analysis of VMG recordings by utilizing wavelet-based time-frequency analysis to characterize the intrinsically non-stationary peripheral postural muscle dynamics during quiet sitting. Our objective was to identify the fibers types responsible for muscle pump activity during sitting, by looking for significant increases in activity in specific muscle fiber groups when a subject assumes an upright position from recumbency, and examine their temporal dynamics
