Typical video compression systems consist of two main modules: motion coding and residual coding. This general architecture is adopted by classical coding schemes (such as international standards H.265 and H.266) and deep learning-based coding schemes. We propose a novel B-frame coding architecture based on two-layer Conditional Augmented Normalization Flows (CANF). It has the striking feature of not transmitting any motion information. Our proposed idea of video compression without motion coding offers a new direction for learned video coding. Our base layer is a low-resolution image compressor that replaces the full-resolution motion compressor. The low-resolution coded image is merged with the warped high-resolution images to generate a high-quality image as a conditioning signal for the enhancement-layer image coding in full resolution. One advantage of this architecture is significantly reduced computational complexity due to eliminating the motion information compressor. In addition, we adopt a skip-mode coding technique to reduce the transmitted latent samples. The rate-distortion performance of our scheme is slightly lower than that of the state-of-the-art learned B-frame coding scheme, B-CANF, but outperforms other learned B-frame coding schemes. However, compared to B-CANF, our scheme saves 45% of multiply-accumulate operations (MACs) for encoding and 27% of MACs for decoding. The code is available at https://***.

Indonesia has enormous geothermal potential, but it only contributes 5% to Indonesia's energy matrix. During 37 years of operation, PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy Kamojang area has been operating to produce electricity and is currently capable of supplying and distributing electricity to the Java-Bali area with a capacity of 60 MWe. However, this can run into a decrease in the efficiency and effectiveness of system performance due to energy losses in several geothermal power plant components during energy conversion. In this case, exergy analysis at PT. Pertamina Geothermal Energy Kamojang area Unit 4 direct-dry steam cycle was done on each component and state. This aims to know the energy and exergy stream and where it happened irreversibly at the component. The biggest irreversibility value occurred at the turbine and main condenser, with a value of 21,693.890 kW and 21,688.148 kW. The total irreversibility of all systems is 58,326.201 kW, while the total exergy inlet systems is 119,308.457 kW, so the value efficiency exergy obtained is 51.13%. Based on the environment as dead state analysis, an efficiency exergy value is inversely proportional to the irreversibility value and ascending environment temperature. System optimization was done with the genetic algorithm method, with variable values at the pressure wellhead and inlet turbine for the overall exergy efficiency value. The value obtained from optimization is 11.98 bar at the wellhead and 10.023 bar at the inlet turbine, and the overall efficiency exergy increased by 51.22%. © 2023 The Author(s)

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently stimulated an upsurge of research interest due to its capability of enhancing the spectral and energy efficiencies for future sixth generation (6G) wireless communication systems. This motivates the integration of IRS into simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems to improve the performance of energy harvesting and information de-coding. To unleash the full potential of IRS and achieve high sum-rate, the optimal joint transmitter precoding and reflective beamforming design is crucial yet challenging to solve. The issue has not been well investigated and the solution remains elusive. Hence, this research aims to jointly optimize the transmitter precoding and reflective beamforming matrices for IRS-assisted multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) SWIPT systems under quality of service (QoS) constraints. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of IRS in enhancing the system performance.

Multimodal image translation has found useful applications in solving several medical imaging problems. In this paper, we presented a systematic analysis of multimodal images and machine learning-based image translation from an information-theoretic perspective. Specifically, we analyzed the amount of mutual information that exists in some commonly used multimodal images. This analysis revealed varying structural correlation across modalities and tissue-dependence of mutual information. We also analyzed the amount of information transferred and gained in multimodal image translation and provided an upper bound on the information gain. Information-theoretic measures were also proposed to assess the effectiveness of an image translator, and the uncertainty associated with image translation. Numerical results were presented to demonstrate the information gain in practical multimodal image translation, and to validate the proposed upper bound on information gain and the translation error predictor. Finally, several potential applications of our analysis results were discussed, including the image denoising and reconstruction using side information generated by image translation. The findings from this study may prove useful for guiding the further development and application of multimodal image translation. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Graph signal processing (GSP) is a prominent framework for analyzing signals on non-Euclidean domains. The graph Fourier transform (GFT) uses the combinatorial graph Laplacian matrix to reveal the spectral decomposition of signals in the graph frequency domain. However, a common challenge in applying GSP methods is that in many scenarios the underlying graph of a system is unknown. A solution in such cases is to construct the unobserved graph from available data, which is commonly referred to as graph or network inference. Although different graph inference methods exist, these are restricted to learning from either smooth graph signals or simple additive Gaussian noise. Other types of noisy data, such as discrete counts or binary digits, are rather common in real-world applications, yet are underexplored in graph inference. In this paper, we propose a versatile graph inference framework for learning from graph signals corrupted by exponential family noise. Our framework generalizes previous methods from continuous smooth graph signals to various data types. We propose an alternating algorithm that jointly estimates the graph Laplacian and the unobserved smooth representation from the noisy signals. We also extend our approach to a variational form to account for the inherent stochasticity of the latent smooth representation. Finally, since real-world graph signals are frequently non-independent and temporally correlated, we further adapt our original setting to a time-vertex formulation. We demonstrate on synthetic and real-world data that our new algorithms outperform competing Laplacian estimation methods that suffer from noise model mismatch. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. The advent of graphene and other two-dimensional van der Waals materials, with their unique electrical, optical, and thermal properties, has resulted in tremendous progress for fundamental science. Recent developments suggest that taking one more step down in dimensionality - from monolayer, atomic sheets to individual atomic chains - can bring exciting prospects as the ultimate limit in material downscaling is reached while establishing an entirely new field of one-dimensional quantum materials. Here we review this emerging area of one-dimensional van der Waals quantum materials and anticipate its future directions. We focus on quantum effects associated with the charge-density-wave condensate, strongly-correlated phenomena, topological phases, and other unique physical characteristics, which are attainable specifically in van der Waals materials of lower dimensionality. Possibilities for engineering the properties of quasi-one-dimensional materials via compositional changes, vacancies, and defects, as well as the prospects of their applications in composites are also discussed. The heterogeneity of the microstructure and the anisotropy of the mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites (CFRP) are associated with complex damage mechanisms that make failure prediction highly challenging. Typical damage mechanisms for CFRP include: (i) interlaminar cracking (delamination), (ii) matrix cracking, and (iii) fiber breakage. X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been utilized recently to identify the complex damage in progressive failure of CFRP in 3D and 4D (3D spatial and 1D temporal). However, these scans contain a large amount of data (≈10 GB/mm3), which makes it challenging to extract mechanistic insights in a reasonable time frame. In previous work, we presented the first deep learning (DL) convolutional neural network (CNN) segmentation of multiclass microscale matrix damage in CFRP. The trained CNN segments complex and sparse composite matrix damage mechanism to ≈ 99.99% agreement, with nearly 100% of human time eliminated, providing higher accuracy compared to human segmentation. In this work, we developed CNN-based method for the automated segmentation of fiber breaks using synchrotron radiation-based CT (SRCT) scans that have been human-labeled. The model employed a U-Net full CNN as the high-level encoder (feature extraction)-decoder (feature localization) structure, and VGG16 as the deep CNN backbone via the publicly available Segmentation Models GitHub repository. An unbiased evaluation was performed comparing the machine vs. the human-labeled ground truth. Finally, active learning was presented for the machine-assisted relabeling of datasets containing fiber breaks. The deep learning-based automated segmentation method demonstrated accurate identification (> 90%) of fiber breakage for CFRP. © 2023 by DEStech Publications, Inc. and American Society for Composites. Computational modeling and simulation of real-world problems, e.g., various applications in the automotive, aerospace, and biomedical industries, often involve geometric objects which are bounded by curved surfaces. The geometric modeling of such objects can be performed via high-order meshes. Such a mesh, when paired with a high-order partial differential equation (PDE) solver, can realize more accurate solution results with a decreased number of mesh elements (in comparison to a low-order mesh). There are several types of high-order mesh generation approaches, such as direct methods, a posteriori methods, and isogeometric analysis (IGA)-based spline modeling approaches. In this paper, we propose a direct, high-order, curvilinear tetrahedral mesh generation method using an advancing front technique. After generating the mesh, we apply mesh optimization to improve the quality and to take advantage of the degrees of freedom available in the initially straight-sided quadratic elements. Our method aims to generate high-quality tetrahedral mesh elements from various types of boundary representations including the cases where no computer-aided design files are available. Such a method is essential, for example, for generating meshes for various biomedical models where the boundary representation is obtained from medical images instead of CAD files. We present several numerical examples of second-order tetrahedral meshes generated using our method based on input triangular surface meshes. © 2021 held by the authors of the individual papers.

Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a technique used for imaging electromagnetic properties of objects using eddy current effects. The non-linear characteristics had led to more difficulties with its solution especially in dealing with low conductivity imaging materials such as biological tissues. Two methods that could be applied for MIT image processing which is the Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) and the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART). ART is widely used in the industry due to its ability to improve the quality of the reconstructed image at a high scanning speed. GAN is an intelligent method which would be able to carry out the training process. In the GAN method, the MIT principle is used to find the optimum global conductivity distribution and it is described as a training process and later, reconstructed by a generator. The output is an approximate reconstruction of the distribution's internal conductivity image. Then, the results were compared with the previous traditional algorithm, namely the regularization algorithm of BPNN and Tikhonov Regularization method. It turned out that GAN had able to adjust the non-linear relationship between input and output. GAN was also able to solve non-linear problems that cannot be solved in the previous traditional algorithms, namely Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) and Tikhonov Regularization method. There are several other intelligent algorithms such as CNN (Convolution Neural Network) and K-NN (K-Nearest Neighbor), but such algorithms have not been able to produce the expected image quality. Thus, further study is still needed for the improvement of the image quality. The expected result in this study is the comparison of these two techniques, namely ART and GAN to get the best results on the image reconstruction using MIT. Thus, it is shown that GAN is a better candidate for this purpose. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

Optical continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems are emerging for personalized glucose management owing to their lower cost and prolonged durability compared to conventional electrochemical CGMs. Here, we report a computational CGM system, which integrates a biocompatible phosphorescence-based insertable biosensor and a custom-designed phosphorescence lifetime imager (PLI). This compact and cost-effective PLI is designed to capture phosphorescence lifetime images of an insertable sensor through the skin, where the lifetime of the emitted phosphorescence signal is modulated by the local concentration of glucose. Because this phosphorescence signal has a very long lifetime compared to tissue autofluorescence or excitation leakage processes, it completely bypasses these noise sources by measuring the sensor emission over several tens of microseconds after the excitation light is turned off. The lifetime images acquired through the skin are processed by neural network-based models for misalignment-tolerant inference of glucose levels, accurately revealing normal, low (hypoglycemia) and high (hyperglycemia) concentration ranges. Using a 1-mm thick skin phantom mimicking the optical properties of human skin, we performed in vitro testing of the PLI using glucose-spiked samples, yielding 88.8% inference accuracy, also showing resilience to random and unknown misalignments within a lateral distance of ~4.7 mm with respect to the position of the insertable sensor underneath the skin phantom. Furthermore, the PLI accurately identified larger lateral misalignments beyond 5 mm, prompting user intervention for re-alignment. The misalignment-resilient glucose concentration inference capability of this compact and cost-effective phosphorescence lifetime imager makes it an appealing wearable diagnostics tool for real-time tracking of glucose and other biomarkers.
