The aim of this study was to investigate the utilization of a recycled rayon waste-kapok mixture as an oil sorbent for the removal of diesel and motor oil. The oil-sorption capacity of the materials under static conditions was evaluated. The results show the high sorption capacity of the recycled rayon waste-kapok mixture for both diesel and motor oil after 15 minutes (14.30 g of oil/g of sorbent for diesel oil and 24.17 g of oil/g of sorbent for motor oil) and after 24 hours (15.30 g of oil/g of sorbent for diesel oil and 25.05 g of oil/g of sorbent for motor oil). It can be concluded that RRWK, which can be produced by utilizing industrial waste, is an effective low cost, environmentally friendly oil sorbent with comparable performance to commercial products.

Two research communities, motor systems neuroscience and motor prosthetics, examine the relationship between neural activity in the motor cortex and movement. The former community aims to understand how the brain controls and generates movement; the latter community focuses on how to decode neural activity as control signals for a prosthetic cursor or limb. Both have made progress toward understanding the relationship between neural activity in the motor cortex and behavior. However, these findings are tested using animal models in an environment that constrains behavior to simple, limited movements. These experiments show that, in constrained settings, simple reaching motions can be decoded from small populations of spiking neurons. It is unclear whether these findings hold for more complex, full-body behaviors in unconstrained settings. Here we present the results of freely-moving behavioral experiments from a monkey with simultaneous intracortical recording. We investigated neural firing rates while the monkey performed various tasks such as walking on a treadmill, reaching for food, and sitting idly. We show that even in such an unconstrained and varied context, neural firing rates are well tuned to behavior, supporting findings of basic neuroscience. Further, we demonstrate that the various behavioral tasks can be reliably classified with over 95% accuracy, illustrating the viability of decoding techniques despite significant variation and environmental distractions associated with unconstrained behavior. Such encouraging results hint at potential utility of the freely-moving experimental paradigm.

A low-dose CT simulation technique is presented which might allow for a virtual ultra-low-dose trial in CT colonography without requiring raw sinogram data. A virtual sinogram is generated by performing the line integral of the CT number-based attenuation value with use of the CT scan parameters available in the DICOM header and in the literature. A separate noise sinogram is generated with use of a noise model, which incorporates the X-ray photon flux depending on the mAs, system electronic noise, and virtual sinogram. A synthetic noise CT image is generated by application of the filtered back projection of the noise sinogram with use of an appropriate filter that depends on the reconstruction kernel of the original CT. Finally, a simulated low-dose CT image is generated by addition of the CT data for the synthetic noise to the original CT data. Clinical CT colonography images with and without fecal tagging were used as simulation input and 50%, 25%, and 12.5% dose images were generated and evaluated. Our results suggest that the proposed CT simulation technique has potential for application in virtual ultra-low-dose trial in CT colonography in which an unlimited number of scan protocols could be performed without repetition of the real CT exposure to the patients. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Professionalism, which includes engineering ethics, is recognized as a valued topic in industry and education but it is difficult to teach and assess. This paper presents a web-based professional responsibility instrument and accompanying rubric, which is used to assess student understanding and skillinanalyzing areas of strength and opportunity surrounding a professional responsibility issue associated with the student's design project. Students completing the assessment most frequently rated work competence asboth highly important and an area of team strength while issues of sustainability were least frequently cited. The scored results of this assessment revealed that students were moderately effective at relating issues of professional responsibility tosituations within their projects as well asaddressing themin a responsible manner. In a post-assessment survey, students and faculty rated the assessment as somewhat accurate to mostly accurate. An interrater agreement study of the assessment showed that scorers were on average within one level of difference on the scoring rubric 97% of the time. Results of administering the assessment in a capstone course can be easily packaged and presented as part of a program accreditation self-study. © 2012 TEMPUS Publications.

The present paper aims to study the possibility to modify the properties of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel incorporated with crosslinked acrylic acid (AAc) by UV irradiation in order to extend the nature of PVA as a biomaterial for many applications in regenerative medicine such as a scaffold that provide structural integrity to tissue constructs, control drug and protein delivery to tissues and cultures. The chemical components in modified hydrogels have been determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and confirmed the successful crosslinking of AAc within the hydrogels. The inter-morphology has been studied by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and demonstrated a uniform micro-pore distribution through the entire modified hydrogels. These results, in combination with the good compatibility of PVA and P(AAc), suggest that PVA/P(AAc) hydrogel is a promising biomaterial for tissue engineering regenerative medicine application. © 2011 IEEE.

We present new methods that enable the fabrication of multiscale, multicomponent protein-patterned surfaces and multiscale topologically structured surfaces by exploiting the merits of two well-established techniques: capillary force lithography (CFL) and microscope projection photolithography (MPP) based on a protein-friendly photoresist. We further demonstrate that, when hierarchically organized micro- and nanostructures were used as a cell culture platform, human colon cancer cells (cell line SW480) preferentially adhere and migrate onto the area with nanoscale topography over the one with microscale topography. These methods will provide many exciting opportunities for the study of cellular responses to multiscale physicochemical cues.

We investigated postannealing temperature dependence of the structural and magnetic properties of Co2Ti0.5Mn0.5Al and Co2Ti0.5Mn0.5Si films. It was observed that the Co2Ti0.5Mn0.5Al film formed an ordered L2 1 structure and an ordered B2 structure after postannealing at above 873 K and below 773 K, respectively. The Co2Ti0.5Mn 0.5Si film deposited with substrate heating at above 473 K formed an ordered L21 structure. The obtained magnetoresistance ratio for a junction using an L21 ordered Co2Ti0.5Mn 0.5Si electrode was 12.5 at room temperature (RT). The estimated spin polarization of the Co2Ti0.5Mn0.5Si film was 0.14 at RT. The magnetoresistance ratios of a junction using a B2 ordered Co2Ti0.5Mn0.5Al electrode were 65.8 at RT and 128.4% at 7 K. The estimated spin polarizations of the Co2Ti 0.5Mn0.5Al film were 0.56 at RT and 0.78 at 7 K. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.
