The purpose of this research is to create a simulator application in calculating farmer's income from the sale of fresh fruit bunches. Farmers can easily find out the outcomes based on how many kilograms of crops are sold through this application. This research was conducted in Mesuji Regency, Lampung Province, using primary data and descriptive analysis. The sampling technique utilized a proportional random sampling method and consisted of 88 oil palm farmers. The results indicated that the application made it simpler for farmers to find out their income. Farmers only needed to input the land area, the harvest number obtained on the harvest day that had been carried out, and the price of fresh fruit bunches so that they would know the estimated monthly and annual income calculations. These calculations can be used by farmers as a predicting and planning tool to avoid losses.

Artesian well is one of the major efforts to obtain water source for fulfilling water demands in Eroniti Conservation park, Ponjong, Yogyakarta by drilling deep into several soil layers. Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) method is the most common approach to determine the existence of groundwater. The method probes layers of rock below the ground surface based on their electrical properties, since the electrical resistivity of each layer is theoretically different. This study aims to utilize the VES approach for investigating the properties of the rock layers in the area to explore groundwater sources. We install six different VES points in the observation area using Schlumberger electrode configuration. The methodology of the work consists of three steps: the planning of the placement of the sounding points, the measurement step performed by a unit of IRIS SYSCAL Resistivity meter, and the data analysis and interpretation. Employing the resistivity analysis, we conclude that the observed region consists of Mediterranean soil as a result of weathering of limestone as well as lithology of the limestone. Furthermore, there are two types of aquifer found in the area: a perched aquifer found 27 meters below the ground surface of VES point 1 and a confined aquifer 166 meters below the ground surface of VES point 2 and 6.

Background: Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disorder that primarily affects the exocrine glands, leading to dryness of mucous membranes and systemic manifestations. This study aimed to identify genetic markers associated with primary SS (pSS) in the Taiwan Han population through a hospital-based genome-wide association study (GWAS) and polygenic risk score (PRS) analysis, addressing the lack of genetic research. Results: This study included 11,390 patients diagnosed with pSS and 113,900 controls. GWAS identified one known locus and eight novel loci. Known HLA alleles, including HLA-DRB1*15:01 and HLA-DQA1*03:01, were successfully replicated in a consistent effect direction. PRS analysis revealed that several autoimmune diseases share similar genetic backgrounds with pSS, including rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. Conclusion: This study represents the largest cohort to date on the genetics of pSS in the Taiwan Han population. Our findings provide valuable insights into the pathogenesis of pSS and emphasize the comorbidities associated with it as an autoimmune disease. © 2024

Objectives: Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a major foodborne pathogen causing from acute gastroenteritis to bacteraemia, particularly in paediatric and elderly patients. Antimicrobial resistance of NTS, especially resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins, has emerged over the past decades. Methods: Thirteen NTS isolates resistant to ceftriaxone or cefotaxime were collected from a teaching hospital in Taipei, and another three from a tertiary hospital, in New Taipei City, Taiwan, from September 2018 to December 2019. Ten other archived isolates from 2000 to 2017 were also obtained. Complete genomes of the 26 isolates were obtained. Serovars, sequence types, resistomes, genetic relatedness, and sequence comparison of plasmids were analyzed. Results: Serogroups B, C2 and E were significantly associated with ampicillin resistance. Over 90% of these 26 isolates are susceptible to carbapenems and colistin. Genomic epidemiology of these isolates shows that bla_CMY-2-harbouring isolates in different serovars were prevalent over two decades, presumably resulting from highly mobile IncI1 plasmid harbouring bla_CMY-2. One type of the IncI1 plasmids contained a mobile element, IS26, which might be involved in the acquisition of antimicrobial resistance genes. Two emerging serovars, S. Goldcoast ST358 harbouring bla_CTX-M-55 on IncHI2 plasmids and S. Anatum ST64 harbouring bla_DHA-1 on IncA/C₂ plasmids persisted in Taiwan, possibly through the clonal spread. Integration of complete or partial plasmid sequences into host chromosomes or multiplications of the antimicrobial resistance genes also appears to be mediated by IS26, in the two emerging clones. Conclusion: The dynamic movement of cephalosporinase genes mediated by IS26 in NTS is of great concern. © 2023 The Authors

Previous research has explored theories regarding the vertical transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and its association with adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes. However, the impact of maternal HPV infection on congenital anomalies (CAs) in offspring remains relatively understudied. We conducted a population-based cohort study linking the Taiwan Birth Registry, Taiwan Death Registry, and National Health Insurance Research Database, in which newborns born in Taiwan between 2009 and 2015 were included. We established a maternal HPV infection cohort comprising 37 807 newborns and matched them with a comparison group of 151 228 newborns at a 1:4 ratio based on index year, age, and sex. The study examined a composite outcome and subgroups of different types of congenital malformations. Differences in cumulative incidence of CAs were assessed using Kaplan–Meier curves and log-rank tests. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regressions. No significant association was found between HPV infection and the broad spectrum of CAs (aHR: 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.98–1.10;log-rank test p = 0.14). However, we observed a 19% increased risk of musculoskeletal CAs in the maternal HPV infection group (aHR: 1.19;95% CI: 1.05–1.34) compared to those without maternal HPV exposure. Other factors, including the type of HPV (aHR: 0.65;95% CI: 0.16–2.63), the timing of exposure (during or before pregnancy), and maternal age (aHR for <30 years: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.94–1.1;aHR for 30–39 years: 1.05, 95% CI: 0.99–1.11;aHR for ≥40 years: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.67–1.17), did not significantly affect the risk for any CA. In conclusion, gestation detection of HPV infection was associated with musculoskeletal CAs but not other major CAs. Prospective studies are warranted to elucidate the necessity of prenatal screening in populations at risk. © 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

BACKGROUND:Breast cancer is a prevalent disease in women, with high prevalence worldwide. The hypoxic microenvironment of solid tumors develops during the progress of carcinogenesis and leads to greater malignancy and treatment resistance. Recently, accumulating evidence indicates that non-coding RNAs, such as circular RNAs (circRNAs), play a pivotal role in altering cellular functions. However, the underlying mechanisms of circRNAs in breast cancer are still unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the role of a tumor-suppressive circRNA, circAAGAB, in breast cancer by assuming down-regulation of circAAGAB under hypoxia and the properties of a tumor suppressor. METHODS:Firstly, circAAGAB was identified from expression profiling by next generation sequencing. Next, the stability of circAAGAB increased by interacting with the RNA binding protein FUS. Moreover, cellular and nuclear fractionation showed that most circAAGAB resided in the cytoplasm and that it up-regulated KIAA1522, NKX3-1, and JADE3 by sponging miR-378 h. Lastly, the functions of circAAGAB were explored by identifying its down-stream genes using Affymetrix microarrays and validated by in vitro assays. RESULTS:The results showed that circAAGAB reduced cell colony formation, cell migration, and signaling through p38 MAPK pathway, as well as increased radiosensitivity. CONCLUSION:These findings suggest that the oxygen-responsive circAAGAB acts as a tumor suppressor in breast cancer, and may contribute to the development of a more specific therapeutic regimen for breast cancer.

The effects of COVID-19 vaccination on short-term and long-term cerebrovascular risks among COVID-19 survivors remained unknown. We conducted a national multi-center retrospective cohort study with 151 597 vaccinated and 151 597 unvaccinated COVID-19 patients using the TriNetX database, from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2023. Patients baseline characteristics were balanced with propensity score matching (PSM). The outcomes were incident cerebrovascular diseases occurred between 1st and 30th days (short-term) after COVID-19 diagnosis. Nine subgroup analyses were conducted to explore potential effect modifications. We performed six sensitivity analyses, including evaluation of outcomes between 1st to 180th days, accounting for competing risk, and incorporating different variant timeline to test the robustness of our results. Kaplan-Meier curves and Log-Rank tests were performed to evaluate survival difference. Cox proportional hazards regressions were adopted to estimate the PSM-adjusted hazard ratios (HR). The overall short-term cerebrovascular risks were lower in the vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group (HR: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.56–0.77), specifically cerebral infarction (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.48–0.79), occlusion and stenosis of precerebral arteries (HR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.53–0.98), other cerebrovascular diseases (HR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.42–0.77), and sequelae of cerebrovascular disease (HR: 0.39, 95% CI:0.23–0.68). Similarly, the overall cerebrovascular risks were lower in those vaccinated among most subgroups. The long-term outcomes, though slightly attenuated, were consistent (HR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73–0.87). Full 2-dose vaccination was associated with a further reduced risk of cerebrovascular diseases (HR: 0.63, 95% CI: 0.50–0.80) compared to unvaccinated patients. Unvaccinated COVID-19 survivors have significantly higher cerebrovascular risks than their vaccinated counterparts.
