Several studies suggest that sleep quality is associated with physical activities. Moreover, deep sleep time can be used to determine the sleep quality of an individual. In this work, we aim to find the association between physical activities and deep sleep time by modeling the time series data such as heart rate and a number of steps captured from a commercial wearable device. Our previous study demonstrates that deep learning-based time series modeling is well suited for our problem since the temporal patterns in the two physical parameters need to be captured to obtain more accurate results. We first preprocess our series data to have a time-step size of 10 minutes. To improve our previous effort in this modeling, we compare four different variants of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)-based models, ranging from single input to dual input models. Our result shows that the simple stacked LSTM model performs better for our data because the remaining models suffer from overfitting due to a larger number of the trained parameters.

Within observational Data science workloads, Berkson's paradox can lead to false causal inferences. One of the prominent quasi-experimental methods to mitigate this selection bias is Propensity Score Matching (PSM). An approach called Neural PSM (NPSM) was developed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional regression-based PSM, including its limited flexibility to model high-dimensional data and non-linear relationships that could cause imperfect covariate balance. In this study, a three-layer depth of Deep Neural Networks was designed to estimate propensity scores and finally balance both control and treatment groups of the Groupon dataset. An unsupervised k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm then helped the model to efficiently detect and cluster similar matching points. From the five salient features presented, NPSM successfully achieved lower differences in Cohen's d effect size, i.e., 0.313 for coupon duration, 0.017 for promotion length, 0.425 for quantity sold, -0.199 for limited supply, and 0.395 for Facebook likes. While these results mostly outperformed Linear Regression (LR) and Random Forest (RF) models, further evaluation is needed to verify the true effectiveness of NPSM in mitigating Berkson's paradox in broader e-commerce contexts.

In agricultural water research, the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technology has emerged as a pivotal approach for large-scale data collection. Water availability in the context of water quality is very important, both for domestic and industrial purposes. For domestic purposes, drinking water and bathing water are separated. Meanwhile, for the palm oil industry, boiler filler is differentiated from additional process water (dilution water). Water quality parameters can be assessed from turbidity and Total Dissolve Solid (TDS). Measurements using measuring instruments separately and repeatedly require significant energy, time, and costs. This research was conducted with the primary objective of presenting a novel method for categorizing water quality with the approach of IoT sensor technology. The research methodology entailed the utilization of an integrated IoT water sensors system in conjunction with manual water categorization. The methods consist of (1) system design, (2) design and installation of sensor and IoT-based microcontrollers, and (3) accuracy and precision testing compared with laboratory measurements. The precision of the integrated IoT water sensors was assessed through a dedicated sensor precision test, resulting in an accuracy rate of 94.4% for the turbidity sensor and 97.5% for the TDS sensor. Notably, this approach successfully discriminated drinking water with valid categorization, while other water types, including groundwater, water with tea, and water with coffee, yielded null categorization results. © 2023 IEEE.

The COVID pandemic has caused tremendous loss worldwide. Now vaccines are the primary weapon to combat the pandemic. Understanding how SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID, may mutate in the presence of the vaccines is critical for designing drugs and vaccines for future variants of the virus. In this study, we investigated the numbers of mutations that SARS-CoV-2 accumulated on each protein over time. We found that different proteins of the virus accumulated different levels of mutations and their mutation rates changed over time following different patterns. We also presented evidence that the mutation of the Spike protein might have been suppressed by the vaccines. This is the first time that such a relation was reported based on real world data. Although the discovery was not meant to be conclusive, this study sheds light onto how the virus may response to the vaccines. If confirmed by further studies, the discovery will have significant impacts on many fields, including drug and vaccine designs. © 2022 IEEE.

Typhoid fever is an endemic disease that burdens Indonesia and has a potentially fatal infection multisystem. Salmonella typhi bacterium is responsible for typhoid fever disease. Poor sanitation, crowding, and slums are the main factors of increasing typhoid fever incidences. Environmental factors directly connected to meteorological factors are the main factor in breeding the Salmonella typhi bacterium. This study aims to identify the correlation between meteorological parameters and typhoid fever disease occurrence. The study was carried out in Jakarta, Indonesia, and the Bureau of Meteorological, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) provided the meteorological parameter data. In addition, the Jakarta health surveillance office provided information on typhoid fever hospitalizations from 2019 to 2021. Pearson's concept was utilized d to investigate the correlation between typhoid fever incidences and the meteorological parameters. Humidity, precipitation, and wind speed are the meteorological parameters that significantly affect in contribute to the occurrence of typhoid fever disease. These findings might be used as a reference for Indonesia's government in making public policy to prevent typhoid fever in Indonesia. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Oil palm fruit farming is one of the most leading agriculture industries in the South East Asia region. Unfortunately, most of the harvesting method is still done through manual labor. Multiple research has been conducted to help farmers automatically detect the ripeness level of the oil palm fruit. We conducted an experiment of detecting the ripeness level of oil palm fruit by using one of the state-of-the-art computer vision approaches, which was deep learning with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The dataset used consists of 7 levels of ripeness with 400 images of oil palm fruits. The models used in this test scenario were both AlexNet and DenseNet. The result of this study showed that DenseNet has been proven to outperform AlexNet by 8.5% in terms of accuracy and 8% in F1 score. © 2021 IEEE.

Information engineering strategies play a significant and transformative role in shaping the landscape of digital agriculture. It drives innovation and efficiency in modern farming practices, with a specific focus on enhancing the value of agricultural commodities, such as sugarcane. The application of mobile technology plays a crucial part in achieving increased sugarcane productivity. Mobile applications, equipped with advanced developer features, offer rapid and user-friendly access to vital information. Traditional methods of estimating sugarcane production relied on manual data recording on paper, followed by data transfer to computer systems, typically managed by sugar factory junior plant officers. This conventional approach presents several inherent weaknesses, including time and effort intensiveness during data recording and entry. Additionally, the potential for errors in calculation and data input is a concern. The storage capacity for paper-based documents is finite, and farmers are often unable to autonomously assess their production potential. The objective of this research is to confront these obstacles by creating a sugarcane production application for Android. This application functions as an information engineering approach focused on forecasting sugarcane yields for plantation owners and their assistants. The development procedure adhered to the systematic waterfall method, following the principles of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) model. Data collection was carried out through observations, while interviews with junior plant officers provided valuable insights into sugarcane estimation techniques. Analysis involved the synthesis of observational and interview data to inform the design of the application's interface and algorithmic system. Despite their drawbacks, multiple-choice questions (MCQ) have been widely used to assess the students' understanding of lectures through examinations. The development of automatic MCQ generation is beneficial, especially for educators. As a starting point for further development, a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) is conducted to uncover current trends, future challenges, and opportunities in automatic MCQ generation. Previously, an SLR was conducted, but it lacks coverage of the utilization of transformer-based models. This SLR covers the development of automatic MCQ generation using either traditional or advanced approaches such as Transformers. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses framework was used to gather the data from Scopus, IEEE Xplore, SpringerLink, arXiv, and Semantic Scholar. The included articles must be open-access computer science conference papers or journal articles and written in English less than five years ago. Four independent reviewers analyzed the research workflow, evaluation metric, and dataset used in each study. There are 18 included studies, where 17% (n = 3) studies are from 2024, 33% (n = 6) studies are from 2023, 22% (n = 4) studies are from 2022, 11% (n = 2) studies are from 2021, and 17% (n = 3) studies are from 2020. There are 33% (n = 6) of the studies used the traditional feature-based engineering approach, 39% (n = 7) of the studies used the Transformer-based model fine-tuning approach, and the remaining used novel approaches. The study found that BERT variants are the most utilized Transformer-based model in automatic MCQ. The research notes some challenges, but also open various opportunities for further research, including Large Language Model (LLM) utilization for automatic MCQ generation, the utilization BERT-based models for standardized machine-learned evaluation metrics, and the initiative for the creation of an MCQ dataset benchmark.

Gastrointestinal diseases are significant health concerns that mostly affect the digestive and biliary tracts. These can only be observed internally through endoscopy, or a modern approach named Wireless Capsule Endoscopy. Though the approach has proven to work, the process relies heavily on medical experts, which is prone to error when given a considerably large load. The use of deep learning in detecting diseases with images has been proven to work in various cases and can be implemented for gastrointestinal diseases. This study compared four deep learning models based on Convolutional Neural Network architectures consisting of the VGG16, ResNet152V2, InceptionV3, and Xception for classifying colon disease images. The experiment showed that the ResNet152V2 performed the best, compared to the other three with a testing accuracy score of 0.9837. On the other hand, the VGG16 had the lowest performance with around accuracy score of 0.89 while the Xception and InceptionV3models yielded similar accuracy scores of 0.9587 and 0.9549, respectively. The results highlight the effectiveness of ResNet152V2 in handling the complexity of colon disease detection

Predicting the best-quality of rice phenotypes is the priority among agricultural researchers to fulfill worldwide food security. Trend development of predictive models from statistics to machine learning is the subject of this review. Gathered from the Google Scholar database, 14 appropriate papers (2016-2020) related to the rice phenotypes prediction were selected through title and abstract content filtering. The outputs show that Support Vector Machine, Multi-layer Perceptron, and regression are the most used models, while yield is the priority prediction point besides tiller, panicle, and 1000-grain weight of rice. However, finding the accurate predictor is invariably challenging due to distinct rice varieties in the world and high confounding factors. Thus, developing an advanced deep learning model that accommodates these needs is worth considering further.
