We propose a novel estimation procedure for certain spectral distributions associated with a class of high dimensional linear time series. The processes under consideration are of the form Xt = Í∞=0 AZt− with iid innovations (Zt). The key structural assumption is that the coefficient matrices and the variance of the innovations are simultaneously diagonalizable in a common orthonormal basis. We develop a strategy for estimating the joint spectral distribution of the coefficient matrices and the innovation variance by making use of the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of appropriately weighted integrals of the sample periodogram. Throughout we work under the asymptotic regime p, n → ∞, such that p/n → c ∈ (0, ∞), where p is the dimension and n is the sample size. Under this setting, we first establish a weak limit for the empirical distribution of eigenvalues of the aforementioned integrated sample periodograms. This result is proved using techniques from random matrix theory, in particular the characterization of weak convergence by means of the Stieltjes transform of relevant distributions. We utilize this result to develop an estimator of the joint spectral distribution of the coefficient matrices, by minimizing an Lk discrepancy measure, for k ≥ 1, between the empirical and limiting Stieltjes transforms of the integrated sample periodograms. This is accomplished by assuming that the joint spectral distribution is a discrete mixture of point masses. We also prove consistency of the estimator corresponding to the L2 discrepancy measure. Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning systems in general, are becoming pervasive in our society, from the industry to the public administration. AI can often provide a very efficient means to support decision-making, but it can represent a danger for high-risk applications such as bio-medicine and healthcare. In particular, biased datasets might lead to inaccurate or discriminatory ML systems, undermining the accuracy of their predictions and putting patients’ health at risk. FanFAIR is a python tool that provides the community with a semiautomatic tool for datasets’ fairness assessment. FanFAIR is designed to integrate qualitative considerations – such as ethics, human rights assessment, and data protection – with quantitative indicators of dataset’s fairness, such as balance, the presence of invalid entries, or outliers. In this work, we extend FanFAIR to deal with categorical data, and introduce a new algorithm for outlier detection in the presence of missing values. We then provide a case study on the data collected from COVID patients admitted to pneumology departments in Italy. We show how the successive steps of data cleaning and variable selection improve the indicators provided by FanFAIR. This shows that data cleaning procedures are not only necessary to improve the performance of the machine learning algorithm using the data for learning, but are also a way to improve (a measure of) fairness. Hence, the proposed case study provides an example in which performance and fairness are not in contrast, like it is commonly believed to be, but they improve together. © 2025 IEEE.

Microbes inhabiting rhizosphere and soils of close vicinity of plants play a pivotal role in plant growth promotion, enhance plant fitness, and improve soil fertility through the cycling of different nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, sulphur etc. The study of rhizosphere and soil-associated microbiome can enhance our knowledge about different genes (known and novel, both) and pathways associated with various metabolic activities of immense importance. Current agricultural system is heavily dependent on numerous synthetic chemicals like insecticides, fungicides, and herbicides. Regular application of such chemicals has raised the issues of environmental pollution and imposed severe risks on human beings. With extensive research, microbes are now established as the most important means of pesticide degradation. The current study focuses on the identification of different genes and pathways involved in the degradation and remediation of various xenobiotics and their components in the 105 different metagenome and metatranscriptome samples of rhizosphere or associated soil of seven different crops, i.e. wheat, oat, pea, soybean, sugarcane, kodo and common bean. For different kinds of xenobiotics components, biodegradation and associated metabolism were analyzed and numerous gene and enzymes associated with these processes were identified. Statistical and computational analyses revealed several significant pathways, including benzoate degradation, central meta-cleavage pathway, salicylate and gentisate catabolism, and phenylacetyl-CoA catabolic pathway. Identified genes/enzymes are important for degradation of various xenobiotic including constituents of different pesticides. Metatranscriptome analysis to identify the influence of diet over metabolic proficiency of rumen in Mehsani buffalo

The rumen microbiome is a complex system of numerous microbes that play crucial role in digesting feed and are of particular interest for the extraction of enzymes for application in industries such as food, biofuel, and others. Metatranscriptome profiling gives insight into the genes being actively transcribed, providing a functional understanding of the rumen. Current study focuses over the analysis of rumen metatranscriptome samples from Mehsani buffalo, belonging to different diet treatments including dry and green roughage with varying amount of concentrate. The study aimed to determine the key biological processes in the rumen and how diet changes affect them. Results showed that the most prevalent microbial community was Prevotella and metabolic activities dominated, with carbohydrate metabolism, fermentation, and methanogenesis among the most abundant functional features. It was identified that functional profile of the rumen samples are majorly influenced by diet. The green roughage diet groups reflect high metabolic activity and contain genes for carbohydrate metabolism, which were not present in the dry roughage diet groups. Attempts were also taken to identify variation in fermentation and methanogenesis processes among these diet variations. Further, the study found that the type of diet greatly impacted the functional profile and have significant influence on metabolic capacity of animals. A set of 64 pathways were identified as significant ones in corresponds to diet variations and out of which 20 belongs to metabolic processes and this was further supported by differential abundance analysis, LEfSe and Random Forest analysis also, highlighting the importance of metabolism in rumen functionality. Metabolic pathways were more abundant in green roughage diets groups compared to dry roughage ones, indicating that green roughage stimulates more metabolic activity compared to dry roughage. To increase maize （Zea mays L.） yields in drought-prone environments and offset predicted maize yield losses under future climates, the development of improved breeding pipelines using a multi-disciplinary approach is essential. Elucidating key growth processes will provide opportunities to improve drought breeding progress through the identification of key phenotypic traits, ideotypes, and donors. In this study, we tested a large set of tropical and subtropical maize inbreds and single cross hybrids under reproductive stage drought stress and well-watered conditions. Patterns of biomass production, senescence, and plant water status were measured throughout the crop cycle. Under drought stress, early biomass production prior to anthesis was important for inbred yield, while delayed senescence was important for hybrid yield. Under well-watered conditions, the ability to maintain a high biomass throughout the growing cycle was crucial for inbred yield, while a stay-green pattern was important for hybrid yield. While new quantitative phenotyping tools such as spectral reflectance （Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI） allowed for the characterization of growth and senescence patterns as well as yield, qualitative measurements of canopy senescence were also found to be associated with grain yield.

The use of Bayesian Networks (BNs) as classifiers in different application fields has recently witnessed a noticeable growth. Yet, using the Naïve Bayes application, and even the augmented Naïve Bayes, to classifier-structure learning, has been vulnerable to some extent, which accounts for the resort of experts to other more sophisticated types of algorithms. Consequently, the use of such algorithms has paved the way for raising the problem of super-exponential increase in computational complexity of the Bayesian classifier learning structure, with the increasing number of descriptive variables. In this context, the main objective of our present work lies in trying to conceive further solutions to solve the problem of the intricate algorithmic complexity imposed during the learning of Bayesian classifiers structure through the use of sophisticated algorithms. Our results revealed that the newly suggested approach allows us to considerably reduce the execution time of the Bayesian classifier structure learning without any information loss. © 2014, Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Despite recent progress in cancer treatment, liver metastases persist as an unmet clinical need. Here, we show that arming liver and tumor-associated macrophages in vivo to co-express tumor antigens (TAs), IFNα, and IL-12 unleashes robust anti-tumor immune responses, leading to the regression of liver metastases. Mechanistically, in vivo armed macrophages expand tumor reactive CD8⁺ T cells, which acquire features of progenitor exhausted T cells and kill cancer cells independently of CD4⁺ T cell help. IFNα and IL-12 produced by armed macrophages reprogram antigen presenting cells and rewire cellular interactions, rescuing tumor reactive T cell functions. In vivo armed macrophages trigger anti-tumor immunity in distinct liver metastasis mouse models of colorectal cancer and melanoma, expressing either surrogate tumor antigens, naturally occurring neoantigens or tumor-associated antigens. Altogether, our findings support the translational potential of in vivo armed liver macrophages to expand and rejuvenate tumor reactive T cells for the treatment of liver metastases. © The Author(s) 2025.

Early tacrolimus exposure does not impact long-term outcomes after liver transplantation
