Pistachio is a nut crop domesticated in the Fertile Crescent and a dioecious species with ZW sex *** sequenced the genomes of Pistacia vera cultivar(cv.)Siirt,the female parent,and *** ***,the male *** chromosome-level reference genomes of pistachio were generated,and Z and W chromosomes were *** ZW chromosomes originated from an autosome following the first inversion,which occurred approximately 8.18 *** inversion events in the W chromosome led to the formation of a 12.7-Mb(22.8%of the W chromosome)non-recombining *** W-specific sequences contain several genes of interest that may have played a pivotal role in sex determination and contributed to the initiation and evolution of a ZW sex chromosome system in *** W-specific genes,including defA,defA-like,DYT1,two PTEN1,and two tandem duplications of six VPS13A paralogs,are strong candidates for sex determination or *** history analysis of resequenced genomes suggest that cultivated pistachio underwent severe domestication bottlenecks approximately 7640 years ago,dating the domestication event close to the archeological record of pistachio domestication in *** identified 390,211,and 290 potential selective sweeps in 3 cultivar subgroups that underlie agronomic traits such as nut development and quality,grafting success,flowering time shift,and drought *** findings have improved our understanding of the genomic basis of sex determination/differentiation and horticulturally important traits and will accelerate the improvement of pistachio cultivars and rootstocks.

The Use of Bromeliads as Biomonitors of Air Quality: A Global Review

Air pollution is a global problem in urban and rural areas, mainly related to vehicular traffic and industrial activities. Bromeliads have been widely used globally for active and passive air quality monitoring. However, a systematic review to facilitate the access and analysis of this information is yet to be made available. The objective of this work was to systematically review the use of bromeliads in biomonitoring of the air quality from articles published between 1990 and 2023 to analyze the progress and impact of the research related to the type of monitoring, species used, pollutants measured, and sampling protocols. The search was carried out in global (Scopus, ISI Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and MDPI) and regional (SciELO and Redalyc) databases with a total of 60 scientific articles, where the neotropical region with 31 articles and the Nearctic region with 11 articles were the most influential regions. In addition, more than 90% of the research has been published in high-impact journals (quartile 1). Passive monitoring registered 25 articles compared to active monitoring with 23, with 23 species of the family Bromeliaceae, predominantly the genus Tillandsia. Tillandsia usneoides was the most common species used in active monitoring, while Tillandsia recurvata was used for passive monitoring. The measurement of heavy metals was the preferred technique (93% of the studies) for air quality monitoring, where Zn, Fe, Pb, Cr, and Mn and the nonessential elements K, Ca, and Na were the most measured. Results obtained by different research groups cannot be compared directly because different methodologies have been used, highlighting the importance of standardized techniques for future work. Thus, as a contribution in this direction, we propose a protocol to facilitate or standardize the selection of the proper methodology for developing air quality monitoring using bromeliads. © 2024 Ángel Benítez et al.

This work investigates the effects of complex networks on the collective behavior of a three-state opinion formation model in economic systems. Our model considers two distinct types of investors in financial markets: noise traders and fundamentalists. Financial states evolve via probabilistic dynamics that include economic strategies with local and global influences. The local majoritarian opinion drives noise traders’ market behavior, while the market index influences the financial decisions of fundamentalist agents. We introduce a level of market anxiety q present in the decision-making process that influences financial action. In our investigation, nodes of a complex network represent market agents, whereas the links represent their financial interactions. We investigate the stochastic dynamics of the model on three distinct network topologies, including scale-free networks, small-world networks and Erdös-Rényi random graphs. Our model mirrors various traits observed in real-world financial return series, such as heavy-tailed return distributions, volatility clustering, and short-term memory correlation of returns. The histograms of returns are fitted by coupled Gaussian distributions, quantitatively revealing transitions from a leptokurtic to a mesokurtic regime under specific economic heterogeneity. PURPOSE:Pediatric hydrocephalus is the most common cause of surgically treatable neurological disease in children. Controversies exist whether endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt placement is the most appropriate treatment for pediatric hydrocephalus. This study aimed to compare the risk of re-operation and death between the two procedures. METHODS:We performed a retrospective population-based cohort study and included patients younger than 20-years-old who underwent CSF shunt or ETV for hydrocephalus from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research database. RESULTS:A total of 3,555 pediatric patients from 2004 to 2017 were selected, including 2,340 (65.8%) patients that received CSF shunt placement and 1215 (34.2%) patients that underwent ETV. The incidence of all-cause death was 3.31 per 100 person-year for CSF shunt group and 2.52 per 100 person-year for ETV group, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 0.79 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.66-0.94, p = 0.009). The cumulative incidence competing risk for reoperation was 31.2% for the CSF shunt group and 26.4% for the ETV group, with an adjusted subdistribution HR of 0.82 (95% CI = 0.70-0.96, p = 0.015). Subgroup analysis showed that ETV was beneficial for hydrocephalus coexisting with brain or spinal tumor, central nervous system infection, and intracranial hemorrhage. CONCLUSION:Our data indicates ETV is a better operative procedure for pediatric hydrocephalus when advanced surgical techniques and instruments are available.

Real-time renal imaging is indispensable for monitoring kidney-related disease processes and evaluating the nephrotoxicity of nanoprobes. Owing to their small size, tunable photoluminescence properties, and low biotoxicity, carbon dots (CDs) are widely employed as nanoprobes for imaging-guided disease diagnosis. However, the preparation of near-infrared CDs is a stupendous challenging. Here, CDs with near-infrared fluorescence (NIR-CDs ) were prepared by one-pot pyrolysis and were comprehensively evaluated for real-time renal imaging. The NIR-CDs possessed super-small size (1.8 ± 0.2 nm) and high quantum yield (14.3% in aqueous solution) at 696 nm. NIR-CDs exhibited high-efficiency renal clearance at 24 h post-treatment (97.47-99.27% ID) via glomerular filtration. The irreversible clearance of NIR-CDs enables effective real-time monitoring of kidney function in the normal and acute kidney injury (AKI) mouse models. Consequently, NIR-CDs can be utilized for imaging analyses of impaired kidney function, pioneering a serviceable guideline for neoapplications of NIR-CDs. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

We investigate the stochastic dynamics of the model under the influence of hub agents, clustering, small-world effects and connectivity randomness using three distinct network topologies: scale-free, small-world and random networks. Our model mirrors various traits observed in real-world financial return series, such as heavy-tailed return distributions, volatility clustering, and short-term memory correlation of returns. The histograms of returns are fitted by coupled exponential distributions, quantitatively revealing transitions from a leptokurtic to a mesokurtic regime under specific economic heterogeneity. We show that the modeled market dynamics depend mainly on the average agent connectivity, anxiety level, and market composition rather than on other specific fundamental structures of network topology.

This research is a collaborative and innovative effort in building such an archive, including the collection of various data resources relevant to COVID-19 research, such as daily cases, social media, population mobility, health facilities, climate, socioeconomic data, research articles, policy and regulation, and global news. Due to the heterogeneity between data sources, our effort also includes processing and integrating different datasets based on GIS (Geographic Information System) base maps to make them relatable and comparable. To keep the data files permanent, we published all open data to the Harvard dataverse (https://***/dataverse/2019ncov), an online data management and sharing platform with a permanent Digital Object Identifier number for each dataset. Finally, preliminary studies are conducted based on the shared COVID-19 datasets and revealed different spatial transmission patterns among mainland China, Italy, and the United States. © 2020 Tao Hu et al., published by Sciendo
