This study presents experimental results showing that weak, extremely low frequency electromagnetic (EM) fields influence the growth rates of HT-1080 fibrosarcoma cells in vitro and offers a theoretical explanation for these effects. The results demonstrate that weak magnetic fields both increase and decrease the growth rates of fibrosarcoma cells by altering the mitochondrial superoxide (O2-) and calcium ions (Ca2+) concentrations in living cells. Over a 4-day exposure period, fibrosarcoma growth rates were modulated in the presence of low-level alternating current (AC) magnetic fields at a 10 μT amplitude at 13.5 Hz to 30 Hz frequency, superimposed on a 45 μT static background field. Effects due to changes in amplitude from 10 to 30 μT at selected frequencies are also investigated with the same superimposed static field. © 2025 USNC-URSI.

Dual-Mode Resonant Sectorial Monopole Antenna with Stable Backfire Gain

A novel design approach to wideband, dual-mode resonant monopole antenna with stable, enhanced backfire gain is advanced. The sectorial monopole evolves from a linear, 0.75-wavelength electric prototype monopole under wideband dual-mode resonant operation. As theoretically predicted by the two resonant modes TE3/5,1and TE9/5,1within a 150° radiator, the operation principle is revealed at first. As have been numerically demonstrated and experimentally validated at 2.4-GHz band, the designed antenna exhibits a wide impedance bandwidth over 90.1%（i.e., 2.06–5.44 GHz）, in which the stable gain bandwidth in the backfire,-x-direction（θ = 90°, φ = 180°） with peak value of 3.2 dBi and fluctuation less than 3 dB is up to 45.3%（i.e., 3.74–5.44 GHz）. It is concluded that the stable wideband backfire gain frequency response should be owing to the high-order resonant mode in the unique sectorial monopole antennas.

This article presents a description of research that has led to the development of a new design permanent magnet machine. The machine is based on the operational principle of the transverse-flux machine (TFM). In the proposed solution, a core commonly used in radial flux machines was employed, significantly simplifying the construction of the TFM machine. This simultaneously reduces flux leakage and enhances the value of the developed electromagnetic torque. The article sequentially outlines the stages of research on the new design, ranging from analytical calculations through Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation to the construction of a machine prototype. © 2024 IEEE.

Falls are a serious problem in the hospital setting and home environments. However, this problem does not only affect the elderly, but also people who have had surgery, have disabling problems, have associated diagnoses (such as poor eyesight, confusion, etc.) or are dizzy or have walking aids. The aim of research was to find, compare and implement fall detectors especially for the hospital environment. This paper summarizes possible fall detectors. Various technological solutions were selected for testing, including wearable technologies as well as contactless technologies based on PIR detectors and mmWave technologies. The selected fall detectors were tested in living laboratory of *** and then in Hospital AGEL Třinec - Podlesí. The best result of the testing was the use of two Vayyar Home Care devices in one room, thus achieving a detection accuracy of 92.50 % and a sensitivity of 92.50 %. © 2023 IOS Press. Images are widely used in social networks, necessitating efficient and secure transmission, especially in bandwidth-constrained environments. This article aims to develop a color image encryption algorithm that enhances security while optimizing computational efficiency. A novel parallel color image encryption algorithm based on the 2-D logistic-Rulkov neuron map (2D-LRNM) is proposed. In this approach, the three channels of the color image are first separated. Cross-channel information interaction is introduced to form three new channels, which are then processed in parallel. During the encryption process of each channel, a block-wise parallel encryption mechanism is applied, ensuring simultaneous encryption of each block. This block-wise strategy effectively leverages parallel computing resources and balances the task load. To meet the demand for a large number of keystreams during encryption, the 2D-LRNM is introduced. It combines the simplicity and chaotic properties of the Logistic map with the multitimescale dynamics and neurodynamic behaviors of the Rulkov map. By overcoming the dimensional limitations inherent in the single Logistic map, this approach extends the system to a 2-D framework, significantly increasing the complexity of chaotic behavior and improving its unpredictability. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed encryption algorithm achieves high security and reduces computation time by approximately 83.3%. © 2014 IEEE.

Noninvasive brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) show great potential in applications including sleep monitoring, fatigue alerts, neurofeedback training, etc. While noninvasive BCIs do not impose any procedural risk to users (as opposed to invasive BCIs), the acquisition of high-quality electroencephalograms (EEGs) in the long term has been challenging due to the limitations of current electrodes. Herein, we developed a semidry double-layer hydrogel electrode that not only records EEG signals at a resolution comparable to that of wet electrodes but is also able to withstand up to 12 h of continuous EEG acquisition. The electrode comprises dual hydrogel layers: a conductive layer that features high conductivity, low skin-contact impedance, and high robustness;and an adhesive layer that can bond to glass or plastic substrates to reduce motion artifacts in wearing conditions. Water retention in the hydrogel is stable, and the measured skin-contact impedance of the hydrogel electrode is comparable to that of wet electrodes (conductive paste) and drastically lower than that of dry electrodes (metal pin). Cytotoxicity and skin irritation tests show that the hydrogel electrode has excellent biocompatibility. Finally, the developed hydrogel electrode was evaluated in both N170 and P300 event-related potential (ERP) tests on human volunteers. The hydrogel electrode captured the expected ERP waveforms in both the N170 and P300 tests, showing similarities in the waveforms generated by wet electrodes. In contrast, dry electrodes fail to detect the triggered potential due to low signal quality. In addition, our hydrogel electrode can acquire EEG for up to 12 h and is ready for recycled use (7-day tests). Altogether, the results suggest that our semidry double-layer hydrogel electrodes are able to detect ERPs in the long term in an easy-to-use fashion, potentially opening up numerous applications in real-life scenarios for noninvasive BCI.

The network switches in the data plane of Software Defined Networking (SDN) are empowered by an elementary process, in which enormous number of packets which resemble big volumes of data are classified into specific flows by matching them against a set of dynamic rules. This basic process accelerates the processing of data, so that instead of processing singular packets repeatedly, corresponding actions are performed on corresponding flows of packets. In this paper, first, we address limitations on a typical packet classification algorithm like Tuple Space Search (TSS). Then, we present a set of different scenarios to parallelize it on different parallel processing platforms, including Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), clusters of Central Processing Units (CPUs), and hybrid clusters. Experimental results show that the hybrid cluster provides the best platform for parallelizing packet classification algorithms, which promises the average throughput rate of 4.2 Million packets per second (Mpps). That is, the hybrid cluster produced by the integration of Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA), Message Passing Interface (MPI), and OpenMP programming model could classify 0.24 million packets per second more than the GPU cluster scheme. Such a packet classifier satisfies the required processing speed in the programmable network systems that would be used to communicate big medical data.

The sleep apnea is a disease in which there is the absence of airflow during respiration for at least 10 s. It may occur several times during the night sleep. This disease can lead to many types of cardiovascular diseases. To detect this disease, signals obtained from many channels of polysomnography are to be observed visually by physicians for the long duration. This procedure is expensive, time-consuming, and subjective. Hence, it is required to build an automated system to detect the sleep apnea with few channels. This paper uses single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signal to detect apneic and non-apneic events. The proposed method uses tunable-Q wavelet transform (TQWT) based filter-bank instead of TQWT to decompose the segment of ECG signal into several constant bandwidth sub-band signals. Then centered correntropies are computed from the various sub-band signals. The obtained features are then fed to the various classifiers to select the optimum performing classifier. In this work, we have obtained the highest classification accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity of 92.78%, 93.91%, and 90.95% respectively using random forest classifier. Hence, our developed prototype is ready for validation with the huge database and clinical usage. © Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2018.

During the last decade, the use of social media has exploded. One of the internet’s most popular and accessible social media sites is Twitter in which people can have micro-blog to post their views on any subject, called a tweet. Indonesia becomes one of country which has the most active user of social media. On the other side, Indonesia has experienced a great deal of natural disasters because it is located in a pacific ring of fire. It is needed effective disaster management used in Indonesia, especially with the help of social media data. Big data analysis obtained during turbulent and unorganized emergency situations is the perfect fit for effective management. During a disaster, it is vital to manage the proper decision to help people affected with their needs. This research investigated some methods used in social media analysis and then apply deep learning model for supervised tasks which classify the related and unrelated disasters on tweet datasets and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) for unsupervised learning which extracts the details category on the disaster Twitter data. The LSTM model architecture obtained a higher score accuracy than CNN. Moreover, the LDA topic modeling obtained potential results on the details topic from the datasets which could describe useful information to help disaster management. © 2023 IEEE.

Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. Data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.
