The global exponential synchronization of complex delayed dynamical networks possessing general topology is investigated in this contribution. The network model considered can represent both the directed and undirected weighted networks. Novel delay-dependent linear controllers are designed via Lyapunov stability theory and appropriate property of the coupling matrix. It is shown that the controlled network is globally exponentially synchronized with a given convergence rate. Two examples of typical dynamical networks with coupling delays of this class, one possesses directed and the other with undirected coupling topology, both having a Lorenz system at each node, have been used to demonstrate and verify the novel control design proposed.

The rate of survival for the out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is not encouraging. Quick and quality prognosis affects the OHCA outcome. Identification of important factors in prognosis can improve the survival rate. Intelligent data analysis of data obtained in a 4 year study of OHCA outcome in Maribor shows that arrival time of emergency medical team, witnessed arrest, bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and especially end-expired CO 2 are of great importance for the OHCA outcome.

We present a modified delay-coordinate mapping-based QRS complex detection algorithm, suitable for hardware implementation. In the original algorithm, the phase-space portrait of an electrocardiogram signal is reconstructed in a two-dimensional plane using the method of delays. Geometrical properties of the obtained phase-space portrait are exploited for QRS complex detection. In our solution, a bandpass filter is used for ECG signal prefiltering and an improved method for detection threshold-level calculation is utilized. We developed the algorithm on the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database (sensitivity of 99.82% and positive predictivity of 99.82%) and tested it on the long-term ST database (sensitivity of 99.72% and positive predictivity of 99.37%). Our algorithm outperforms several well-known QRS complex detection algorithms, including the original algorithm.

Water diffusion measurements have been shown to be sensitive to tissue cellular size, extra cellular volume, and membrane permeability. Therefore, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) by MRI can be used to characterize highly cellular regions of tumors versus acellular regions, distinguishing cystic regions from solid regions. An automatic segmentation method is proposed in this paper based on a multi-phase clustering algorithm to segment the brain tumors in a feature space extracted from DTI images. The algorithm is applied on images of a total of 20 patients with 4 different types of tumors. The tumor region segmentation was 92% accurate based on the segmentation results using anatomical images and 100% accurate based on biopsy results. In general, the segmentation results obtained by the proposed method revealed a strong agreement with the biopsy results and anatomical images, providing support for the accuracy and robustness of the proposed feature space and the segmentation procedure.

Considering the large amounts of data that is nowadays produced in the biochemistry (functional genomics) it is difficult to extract the information from the measurements. There is currently also a great interest in the development of novel analytical technologies for rapid screening of disease symptoms in pharmaceutical and clinical applications. Modeling and simulation can provide a useful help in understanding the relations of the measured substances and to minimize the need for measurements. The BioChem library presented here is the first free Modelica library available for mathematical modeling of biochemical processes. Three examples are shown to illustrate the library. First, a simple insulin model is presented. Then a simplified model of cholesterol together with simulations are shown. Next, a simple drug model together with parameter estimation in NONMEN are presented. The BioChem library allows for fast and end-user friendly modeling of biomedical systems. The graphical user interface provides graphics similar to that used in the description of metabolic pathways in biochemistry.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women worldwide. The major impediment to finding cures for malignant breast cancers is the development of resistances to therapeutic treatments by tumors. The development of nanoparticles may provide an important opportunity for improvement in breast cancer treatments. Nanoparticles coupled with the specific targeting agents have the ability to track and eliminate breast cancer cells. In this paper, we present gold-based nanoparticles for breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. The proposed design can become a new method for the treatment of breast cancer tumors. Our design can eventually lead to clinical trials which will benefit breast cancer patients worldwide.

The electronic properties of exohedrally doped double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) have been investigated using density functional theory and resonance Raman spectroscopy (RRS) measurements. First-principles calculations elucidate the effects of exohedral doping on the M@S and S@M systems, where a metallic (M) tube is either inside or outside a semiconducting (S) one. The results demonstrate that metallic nanotubes are extremely sensitive to doping even when they are inner tubes, in sharp contrast to semiconducting nanotubes, which are not affected by doping when the outer shell is a metallic nanotube (screening effects). The theoretical predictions are in agreement with RRS data on Br2- and H2SO4-doped DWNTs. These results pave the way to novel nanoscale electronics via exohedral doping. © 2007 American Chemical Society.

A class of uncertain time-varying complex dynamical networks is studied in this paper and a model introduced. On the grounds of that model then the locally and globally decentralized synchronization of these networks are thoroughly investigated. Several network synchronization criteria are deduced. Especially, the assumptions adopted and decentralized control laws designed are considerably simple. An illustrative example along with the respective numerical and computer simulation results is also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed synchronization control synthesis.

Recent research trends focus on how multiscale biomedical information can be modeled and transformed into knowledge, in order to lead to a less interfering but also more individualized diagnosis and therapy. In order to assess the clinical importance of models of human pathology (e.g. cancer), it is necessary to validate them with prior and post treatment clinical data which in turn requires the determination of the tumor size and shape with high resolution, accuracy and precision, as well as structural and physiological information. This paper discusses some of the most important image analysis challenges in order to define an optimal method for extracting more accurate and precise anatomical and functional information related to the underlying pathology, which can be used for initializing and validating models of pathophysiology as well as simulations/predictions of the response to therapeutical regimes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

In this paper, we localize the shape-determinative slices of the masseter, which plays a critical role in the mastication system, from magnetic resonance (MR) data sets for clinical purposes. Shape-based criteria were used to locate the candidates for determinative slices from training data. The localization process involves tracking of the centroid and detecting the locations where the structure of the masseter undergoes an abrupt change in orientation. Having determined all the candidates which satisfy the criteria, fuzzy-c-means (FCM) clustering technique was used to establish the determinative slices. Localization of these slices will facilitate the building of more accurate models. It will also allow for more accurate computerized extraction of the masseter from MR data. In our work here, a hybrid method to shape-based interpolation is used to build the masseter model from magnetic resonance (MR) data sets, and the mean overlap index (k) achieved is 87.7%. Extraction of the masseter was carried out using our earlier proposed method and the mean k achieved is 88.9%. This indicates good agreement between the results obtained using computerized technique and those contained using manual contour tracing.
