In Haddad et al. (2004), we have shown that it is feasible to design filters with arbitrary waveform responses and therefore we propose an ultra-wideband pulse generator incorporating a filter with a Daubechies' impulse response (i.e. maximally flat over the desired frequency range). This pulse generator is co-designed with wideband antennas. An eight-order Pade approximation of its transfer function is selected to implement the FCC stipulated frequency spectrum. Subsequently, the orthonormal (Johns et al., 1989) form is adopted, which is intrinsically semi-optimized for dynamic range, has low sensitivity to component mismatch, high sparsity and whose coefficients can be physically implemented. Each coefficient in the state-space description of the orthonormal ladder filter is implemented at circuit level using a novel 2-stage gm cell employing negative feedback. Simulation results in IBM's CMOS 0.13mum technology show that this pulse generator requires a total current of 25mA from a 1.2V power supply. The frequency coverage of the simulated waveform is about 85% of the FCC mask

In this paper we address the limits of the semi-classical models used till now in solid state physics to describe the electronic conductance of a wire. We provide an overview of the quantized conductance behavior reported in plenty of experiments where the width of the wire is approaching nanometer scale. Furthermore, we report a simple and reliable theory that has been provided to explain this behavior and that can be a starting point in order to develop a useful circuit theory. Humanoids require interaction with their environment through careful placement and utilisation of its contacts to realise a desired motion. In most cases however, contact placement is constrained and there subsequently exists many motions which are not realisable. When contacts are restricted to a horizontal ground plane, a zero moment point (ZMP) analysis is sufficient for determining the readability of a specified motion. In this paper we briefly review the fundamentals of a ZMP analysis and then extend these principles so that a rigourous analysis concerning the realisability of humanoid motion on a complex topology (uneven surface) can be explored.

The codesign of an impulse generator and miniaturized antennas for ultra-wideband impulse radio is described. The impulse generator, discussed by Bragga et al, in 2004, is designed with differential outputs that are fed to the antenna, producing an optimum match of the generator to the antenna, an improved magnitude response, and reduced ringing of the radiated pulse. The impulse generator is preceded by a programmable pulse-position modulator and consists of a triangular pulse generator and a cascade of complex first-order systems, which, in turn, are made up of differential pairs employing partial positive feedback to approximate a Gaussian monocycle waveform. The complete pulse generator is fabricated in IBM 0.18-μm Bi-CMOS IC technology. Measurements show the correct operation of the circuit for supply voltages of 1.8 V and a power consumption of 45 mW. The output pulse approximates the Gaussian monocycle having a pulse duration of about 375 ps. Proper modulation of the pulse in time is confirmed. A number of antennas with differentially fed baluns and input impedances of 100 Ω have been designed. From measurements, it can be seen that ringing is considerably smaller as compared to conventionally fed antennas. © 2006 IEEE.

The goal to control the dynamics of high-rise buildings either to ameliorate the damage or prevent their destruction when subject to an earthquake excitation has been subject of extensive research. All known control designs have advantages and disadvantages as well as operating limits. The application of sliding-mode control to controlling earthquake induced vibrations of a multi-story structural system as an active seismic compensation plus base isolation has been investigated. The performance has been compared to the one of traditional industrial controls, and relevant conclusions drawn. Simulation results, carried out using El Centro earthquake acceleration, have shown that the sliding mode control can decrease significantly displacements of the floors. Copyright © 2006 IFAC.

The objective of this study was to develop a standardized protocol for the capturing and analysis of endoscopy digital images for subsequent use in a computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system in gynaecological cancer. Images were captured at optimum illumination and focus at 720times576 pixels using 24 bits color in the following cases: (i) for a variety of testing targets from a color palette with known color distribution, (ii) different viewing angles and distances from calf endometrium, and (iii) images from the human endometrium. Images were then gamma corrected and their classification performance was compared against that of non-gamma corrected images. No significant difference in texture features was found between the close up and panoramic views, and between angles, either before or after gamma correction. There was significant difference in certain texture features between normal and abnormal endometrium, both before and after gamma correction. Our findings suggest that proper color correction can significantly impact CAD system performance, and we recommend its application prior to quantitative texture analysis in gynaecological endoscopy

Given a continuous-time bandlimited signal, the Shannon sampling theorem provides an interpolation scheme for exactly reconstructing it from its discrete samples. We analyze the relationship between concentration (or compactness) in the temporal/spectral domains of the (i) continuous-time and (ii) discrete-time signals. The former is governed by the Heisenberg uncertainty inequality which prescribes a lower bound on the product of effective temporal and spectral spreads of the signal. On the other hand, the discrete-time counterpart seems to exhibit some strange properties, and this provides motivation for the present paper. We consider the following problem: for a bandlimited signal, can the uncertainty inequality be expressed in terms of the samples, using the standard definitions of the temporal and spectral spreads of the signal? In contrast with the results of the literature, we present a new approach to solve this problem. The objective of this study was to classify hysteroscopy images of the endometrium based on texture analysis for the early detection of gynaecological cancer. A total of 418 regions of interest (ROIs) were extracted (209 normal and 209 abnormal) from 40 subjects. Images were gamma corrected and were converted to gray scale. The following texture features were extracted: (i) statistical features, (ii) spatial gray level dependence matrices (SGLDM), and (iii) gray level difference statistics (GLDS). The PNN and SVM neural network classifiers were also investigated for classifying normal and abnormal ROIs. Results show that there is significant difference (using Wilcoxon rank sum test at a=0.05) between the texture features of normal and abnormal ROIs for both the gamma corrected and uncorrected images. Abnormal ROIs had lower gray scale median and homogeneity values, and higher entropy and contrast values when compared to the normal ROIs. The highest percentage of correct classifications score was 77% and was achieved for the SVM models trained with the SF and GLDS features. Concluding, texture features provide useful information differentiating between normal and abnormal ROIs of the endometrium

While there are number of guidelines and methods used in practice, there is no standard universally agreed upon system for assessment of pathological voices. Pathological voices are primarily labeled based on the perceptual judgments of specialists, a process that may result in different label(s) being assigned to a given voice sample. This paper focuses on the recognition of five specific pathologies. The main goal is to compare two different classification methods. The first method considers single label classification by assigning a new label (single label) to the ensembles to which they most likely belong. The second method employs all labels originally assigned to the voice samples. Our results show that the pathological voice assessment performance in the second method is improved with respect to the first method
