Decision support systems that help physicians are becoming very important part of medical decision making. They are based on different models and the best of them are providing an explanation together with an accurate, reliable and quick response. One of the most viable among decision-making models is the concept of decision trees, already successfully used for many medical decision making purposes. Although effective and reliable, the traditional decision tree construction approach still contains several deficiencies. Therefore we decided to develop and compare several decision supporting models, each of them built with different discretization of attributes and decision classes. For the construction of decision trees we used MtDeciT, in our laboratory developed tool for building decision trees using the classical induction method. All solutions were evolved for determining the influence of basic properties of child and his/her parents to length of successful breastfeeding. A comparison between developed models and obtained results has shown that the way of discretization obviously plays a great role in the reliable and accurate real-world medical decision making.

The near field distributions in radial line slot antennas (RLSA) for surface wave coupled plasma (SWP) are examined. The RLSA are suitable for uniform, high density and large-area plasma generation. In order to realize higher productivity, quick evacuation of reaction gas a narrow gap process space is highly required. Since a wafer is placed close to the antenna aperture in this case, the evaluation of the electromagnetic near-fields in the RLSA for the plasma process is effective and indispensable. Plasma distribution control by changing the slot pattern is also possible based upon the information of the near field distributions. A novel slot pattern, which has many transverse slots, is fabricated and tested. The exponential attenuation of the fields in the boresight direction is measured and the interesting and remarkable characteristics of the novel RLSA for SWP process are confirmed.

In this paper we address the decomposition problem of electromyographic signals (EMG) and we present a new idea for the decomposition approach introducing the time-scale phase representation. Considering the nature of EMG signals, a special set of nonorthogonal conjugated basis functions is used to perform the time-scale analysis. Mapping the modified signal phase into the time-scale phase plane is applied. Its minimization leads towards a very good time localization of individual superimposed signal components.

Multimedia communications have evolved rapidly during the last few years and they now require communication services with guaranteed quality of service (QoS). For the type of these new distributed multimedia applications, it is crucial to monitor continuously the current QoS parameters of a connection to ensure that they comply with the pre-arranged negotiated values. The method proposed in this paper suggests the use of QoS monitoring agents in the ATM switches as well as in the end systems, in a way that allows automatic recovery, if possible, from all the QoS violations. The recovery will be achieved by redistributing the levels of QoS that should be supported immediately by a component to meet the end-to-end requirements. An initial architecture is proposed as well as the communication protocol between the agents and future directions are given.

A medical virtual instrument has been developed to acquire and analyze the phonocardiogram (PCG), the heart sound and murmur signal. This instrument consists of a Pentium 200 computer running Windows95, equipped with LabVIEW software and a plug-in data acquisition board, and a two-channel custom designed bio-signal preamplifier. The bio-signal preamplifier allows the data acquisition board to acquire both the PCG and the electrocardiogram (ECG). LabVIEW software modules have been developed to create virtual instrument's front panels for the following functions: to manage patient information and data files, to capture and display current ECG and heart sound signals while saving or analyzing previous acquired signals, to perform the spectral and time-frequency analysis of the heart sounds and murmurs, and to review the previous recordings. This instrument can be used to display the PCG and to analyze the individual heart sound and murmur for the detection of heart valve diseases. It can also be used to analyze the carotid bruit for the diagnosis of carotid artery stenosis. This study demonstrated that a LabVIEW-based medical virtual instrument provides a low-cost, reliable, and flexible solution for data acquisition and analysis of the PCG and carotid bruit.
