Voice morphing is the process of gradually transforming the voice of a given speaker to that of another. The ability to change the speaker's individual characteristics and produce high-quality voices can be used in many applications. For example, in multimedia and video entertainment, voice morphing is just like its visual counterpart: while seeing a face gradually changing from one person's to another's, we can simultaneously hear the voice changing as well. Another application could be in forensic voice identification: creating a voice-bank of different pitches, rates, and timbres, to assist in recognition of the suspect's voice. In this study we present a new technique, which enables the production of N intermediate voices that gradually change between voices of two speakers, or one voice signal that changes gradually. This technique is based on two components. One is creating a 3D prototype waveform interpolation (PWI) surface from the residual error ' signal, which is estimated from LPC analysis, to produce a new intermediate excitation signal. The second component is a representation of the vocal tract by a lossless tube area function, and interpolation of the two speakers' parameters.

A new low-power design method based on multiple low swing internal voltage values is proposed in this paper. It can be applied in logic circuits, which are designed with different logic family techniques such as Complementary Pass Transistor Logic (CPL), Domino Logic and Cascade Voltage Switch Logic (CVSL). The goal of this method is the reduction of the circuit power dissipation, with only a negligible increase in the area, without a reduction in the circuit operating speed. This is achieved with the replacement of a number of selected full swing voltage circuit components by low swing voltage components. The application of the proposed technique in a CPL 4-bit multiplier proved that 70% power dissipation reduction was achieved, with 30% area overhead, and no reduction in the circuit speed. © 2001 IEEE.

The article presents the extension of a common decision tree concept to a multidimensional - vector - decision tree constructed with the help of evolutionary techniques. In contrary to the common decision tree the vector decision tree can make more than just one suggestion per input sample. It has the functionality of many separate decision trees acting on a same set of training data and answering different questions. Vector decision tree is therefore simple in its form, is easy to use and analyse and can express some relationships between decisions not visible before. To explore and test the possibilities of this concept we developed a software tool - DecRain - for building vector decision trees using the ideas of evolutionary computing. Generated vector decision trees showed good results in comparison to classical decision trees. The concept of vector decision trees can be safely and effectively used in any decision making process. © 2001 IMIA. All right reserved.

Decision trees have been successfully used for years in many medical decision making applications. Transparent representation of acquired knowledge and fast algorithms made decision trees one of the most often used symbolic machine learning approaches. This paper concentrates on the problem of separating acute appendicitis, which is a special problem of acute abdominal pain from other diseases that cause acute abdominal pain by use of an decision tree approach. Early and accurate diagnosing of acute appendicitis is still a difficult and challenging problem in everyday clinical routine. An important factor in the error rate is poor discrimination between acute appendicitis and other diseases that cause acute abdominal pain. This error rate is still high, despite considerable improvements in history-taking and clinical examination, computer-aided decision-support and special investigation, such as ultrasound. We investigated three different large databases with cases of acute abdominal pain to complete this task as successful as possible. The results show that the size of the database does not necessary directly influence the success of the decision tree built on it. Surprisingly we got the best results from the decision trees built on the smallest and the biggest database, where the database with medium size (relative to the other two) was not so successful. Despite that we were able to produce decision tree classifiers that were capable of producing correct decisions on test data sets with accuracy up to 84%, sensitivity to acute appendicitis up to 90%, and specificity up to 80% on the same test set. © 2001 IMIA. A decision tree is a good classifier with a transparent decision mechanism. Decision-tree building methods usually have problems in splitting the learning samples into more subsets, because of the nature of the tree. If the classification into such subsets is not possible, it is better to put the classification decision on to some other classifier. This leads to the introduction of a null classification, which simply means that no classification is possible in this step. This approach is sensible with evolutionary methods, as they can handle a number of trees simultaneously. In the process of construction, we have to address the problem of whether a classification is sensible. The performance of the proposed model has been tested on several data sets and the results presented on one such data set show its potential.

Future electric lights will be composed of white LED (light emitting diodes). Indoor wireless optical communication systems utilizing white LED lights have been proposed in our laboratory and we have been studying it. Generally, plural lights are installed in our room. Therefore, their optical path difference must be considered. In this paper, the influence of optical path difference has been investigated and two approaches for this problem are introduced. One uses OOK-RZ (on-off keying, return-to-zero) coding and the other uses optical OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). From the results of computer simulations, we have found that these approaches are feasible for wireless optical communication systems utilizing white LED lights.

A novel fluorescence thin-film integrated sensor has been proposed that retains the beneficial selectivity characteristics typical of optical and electronic sensors, while improving the signal-to-noise ratio in a miniature geometry. The sensor can be tuned to measure a wide variety of biological species by varying its thin-film corrugation period. The optical properties of the sensor are determined, in large part, by optical cross coupling through corrugated metal film and enhanced fluorescence. The surface plasmon-surface plasmon cross coupling was theoretically modeled and experimentally tested. Finally, prospective applications of this sensor in key areas of nanotechnology and bioengineering are discussed.

The paper addresses the problem of multilingual acoustic modelling for the design of multilingual speech recognisers. Two different approaches for the definition of multilingual set of triphones (bottom-up and a top-down) are investigated. A new clustering algorithm for the definition of multilingual set of triphones is proposed. The agglomerative clustering algorithm (bottom-up) is based on a definition of a distance measure for triphones defined as a weighted sum of explicit estimates of the context similarity on a monophone level. The monophone similarity estimation method is based on the algorithm of Houtgast. The second type of system uses tree-based clustering (top-down) with a common decision tree. The experiments were based on the SpeechDat II databases (Slovenian, Spanish and German 1000 FDB SpeechDat II). Experiments have shown that the use of the agglomerative clustering algorithm results in a significant reduction of the number of triphones with minor degradation of word accuracy. © 2000 IEEE.

In a psychophysical experiment, a wideband, 4-ms noise is compared with spectrally smoothed versions of the noise. To isolate on the magnitude spectrum, the phase spectrum is controlled by assigning the same random phase spectrum to both the original and smoothed signals. Depending on the choice of phase spectrum, discrimination thresholds for spectral shape vary from a maximum spectral deviation of 2-3 dB to as much as 25 dB. The exact source of this effect remains an open question. However, it suggests that not all transients require the same signal fidelity. Given a proper characterization of the perceptual response, it may be possible to reduce the size of the codebook required to maintain acceptable perceptual results. © 2000 ICMC.
