Establishing early warning systems and efficient management of water resources in tidal reaches is crucial for achieving adequate flood protection. In tidal reaches, the river stage interacts non-linearly with tides (downstream) and discharge (upstream), making the modeling of river processes extremely complex. Data-driven methods have proven helpful for predicting the river stage parameter. This contrasts with existing numerical approaches, which suffer from several limitations. The aim of this study was to predict the river stage of the upstream part of the tidal river, where the influence of salinity is present during the summer months. Using the CNN-LSTM model trained on historical records of the discharge (station of the variable to be predicted), the river stage of three downstream stations, and the point of interest, the prediction was carried out up to 24 hours in advance. By incorporating feature engineering, we achieved an improvement in model results for the longest horizon, confirmed by standard performance metrics, and considered it efficient and effective for risk mitigation. Introducing feature engineering into the data preprocessing resulted in a predictive performance improvement of 0.98% for the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) metric, 7.0% for the root mean squared error (RMSE) metric, and 7.25% for the mean absolute error (MAE) metric over the second and third-best scenarios using a spectrogram and time-series data. © 2024 University of Split, FESB.

For future Internet of Vehicles (IoV), communications and computing will converge to provide services. Federated learning (FL), as one of the typical distributed computing technologies, needs to be integrated with IoV. For such integration, FL suffers from the straggler effect that the entire learning speed is lowered down, because of the existence of the devices, such as low-powered road side units and vehicles, taking more time to complete their tasks. Although the existing mechanisms reduce straggler effects by adopting asynchronous mechanisms and clustering mechanisms, they lack the detailed analysis of the reasons and the impacts of each cause, leading to inefficiencies in the design of algorithm. Additionally, most of the existing work only considered the impact of a single factor in computation, communication, or data distribution, which lacks comprehensive on research for causes of stragglers effects. The bottleneck is that it is laborious to observe the time delay precisely with the existing high-calculating evaluations. In this article, we elaborately explore the effects of computing power, communication capability, and data distributions on the straggler effects with carefully designing and conducting the extensive experiments. After investigations, we propose a novel learning completion time estimation formula for low computing capability devices with mini-batch stochastic gradient decent (SGD). We compare our proposed estimation formula with the one based on floating operation per second (FLOPs). Through the evaluations, our formula can demonstrate the improvement up to 72.4% at docker and 32.4% at Raspberry Pi device compared to the existing work. © 2014 IEEE.

Wireless Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) emerged as an innovative and patient-centric approach for non-invasive and painless examination of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It serves as a pivotal tool in helping medical practitioners in the early detection of anomalies within the intricate domain of the human GI tract. The automated identification of aberrations assumes paramount significance, contributing not only to temporal efficiency but also to timely diagnosis. Within the realm of academic literature, a plethora of Artificial Intelligence (AI) methodologies have been proposed to effectuate the automatic classification, segmentation, and synthesis of anomalies inherent in WCE images. This scholarly endeavor undertakes a comprehensive and meticulous survey, elucidating the spectrum of anomaly classification, summarization, and detection techniques harnessed for computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) in the context of WCE images. The survey begins by delineating the methodologies underpinning WCE image classification and video processing. Subsequently, an exhaustive evaluation of techniques for analyzing WCE images is furnished, accompanied by an in-depth exploration of pertinent surveys, in addition to a judicious assessment of their merits and demerits. Furthermore, this study undertakes a rigorous evaluation of prevailing datasets utilized to benchmark the efficacy of various WCE techniques. — In recent years, time series prediction has become a highly interesting topic in various applied areas, including clinical time series analysis. Hospitals and other clinical healthcare systems collect Electronic Health Records. These records contain important information that needs to be mined. This information provides a solid basis for predicting hospital readmission, helping to improve healthcare, enhance patient outcomes, and optimize hospital resources. This study introduces a novel deep learning attention-based approach for predicting 30-day ICU readmissions using clinical time series information extracted from the MIMIC III dataset. This approach incorporates time-aware positional encoding into the attention mechanism to enhance predictive performance by capturing the temporal representation of data and considering the temporal order of clinical time series data. This model is compared with cutting-edge models. The significant enhancements in the model performance achieved by the proposed method highlight the effectiveness of incorporating time-aware positional encoding in capturing temporal dependencies and improving prediction outcomes. These results underscore the potential of advanced attention mechanisms in clinical time series analysis. ©2024 IEEE.

This article deals with the accuracy check of the PQ analyzers using the OMICRON CMC 356 calibrator. This article describes the principle and concept of three applications used to test the accuracy of various quantities important in PQ measurements. Furthermore, the GUI of each application, its principle, and description of functionality, software architecture, and implementation in the LabVIEW graphical programming environment are described. The purpose of the applications is the automated generation of a three-phase voltage at the output of the OMICRON CMC 356 calibrator with parameters defined by the operator to test the accuracy of the PQ analyzers. The first application is used to generate the harmonic components according to EN 50160 with definable deviations from the standard and duration intervals. The second application is to generate defined sequence of events (overvoltages, undervoltages, faults) with a definable duration. The third application is used to simulate different types of voltage fluctuations called flicker at the output of the calibrator. © 2023 IEEE.

Seizures that take place repeatedly and without provocation are referred to as epilepsy. Epilepsy can be diagnosed with electroencephalography (EEG). One of the most influential challenges of the past few years has been the use of deep learning algorithms to replace manual inspection of medical signals by specialists, such as epilepsy signal classification. This paper presents a multi-label classification approach for epileptic seizures using deep learning. UCI machine learning repository's epileptic seizure dataset has been used to classify epileptic seizure patients. 178 features are present in each of the 11500 samples in the dataset. Based on a variety of criteria, the proposed method may have a positive impact on epilepsy diagnosis, in most cases by approximately 6% compared with existing methods utilizing long short-term memory (LSTM) and autoencoder. It is possible thus to develop and apply gated recurrent unit-based methods with good potential for categorizing EEG signals for epilepsy diagnosis based on gated recurrent unit (GRU)-CNN based methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Purpose: The development of an automated premature ventricular contraction (PVC) detection system has significant implications for early intervention and treatment decisions. This study aims to develop a novel approach using various supervised machine learning (ML) methods for detecting PVCs in electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. Methodology: To achieve this, we extracted ten distinct statistical and temporal features from 33 long-term ECG recordings from the benchmark MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (MIT-BIH-AD), capturing significant characteristics from the signals. We then investigated the effectiveness of traditional ML algorithms in identifying PVCs based on these features, namely support vector machine (SVM), decision tree (DT), naïve Bayes (NB), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and artificial neural network (ANN). Results: Among these classifiers, the SVM, KNN, ANN, and DT classifiers demonstrated exceptional discriminatory power and classification performance, yielding near-perfect area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC-ROC) values of 97.3%, 95.4%, 95%, and 94.1%, respectively. On the other hand, the SVM classifier emerged as the most accurate, achieving an overall accuracy of 97.39%, indicative of making correct predictions. Conclusion: These findings underscore the generalization of the proposed approach, especially since we worked on an extended dataset encompassing different types of heartbeats to discriminate PVCs from other heartbeat types, not only normal ones, and providing closer alignment with real-world scenarios. Subsequently, the robustness and accuracy of these models highlight their suitability for clinical applications and their potential for efficient implementation and deployment in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as they demand minimal computational resources and time. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to The Brazilian Society of biomedical engineering 2025.

This elaboration presents the synthesis of the Takagi-Sugeno type Fuzzy Logic controller realizing the programmable parameters of the state feedback controller together with the steady state current for the active magnetic levitation system. Closed-loop dynamics was calculated precisely with respect to the requested dynamics. Two cases were considered: fixed-and variable-closed-loop dynamics. The Fuzzy Logic Controller was considered under four scenarios with linear, nonlinear, and constant in-range output. The study was supported by simulations and experimental investigations.
