To improve the daily living independence of people with limb impairments, researchers are developing various prosthetic limbs. This study aims to design a dual-modality sensor integrating surface electromyography (sEMG) and force myography (FMG) to measure muscle activities for forearm and hand motion recognition. sEMG records electrical signals from muscle contractions, while FMG measures muscle mechanical deformation during contraction. Combining these two models compensates for individual limitations and increases overall performance. An integrated design of the FMG and sEMG measurement units enables simultaneous measurement while keeping the sensor compact. Using strain gauges to sense FMG instead of traditional force-sensitive resistors can enhance signal stability and sensitivity. The dual-modality sensor combines sEMG and FMG advantages to offer accurate and reliable hand gesture recognition. Experimental results show a 91.8% classification accuracy for recognizing 22 forearm and hand motions using the dual-modal sensor. This technology offers an effective means of controlling prosthetic limbs, improving life quality for individuals with limb impairments, and has potential applications in biomedical engineering, rehabilitation, and robotics. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.

There will be vibrations caused by friction between the rotating workpiece and the insert on the boring bar during the boring process. Vibrations that occur in the workpiece can be suppressed with a Dynamic Vibration Absorber (DVA). Therefore, the boring process produces a rough surface and damages the components of the lathe. In this research, DVA is placed on a workpiece by utilizing force damping in the radial direction and it is called as Rubber Radial Vibration Damper (RRVD) with rubber as a damping element. An analysis of the effect of RRVD addition on the vibration reduction response of the workpiece was carried out. The variations in this study are mass of RRVD (AISI 4340 and Copper Alloy), cutting parameters, and the ratio of length per diameter (L/D) of the workpiece overhang 7, 8, and 9. The simulation results showed that the main system's highest natural frequency and amplitude occurred at the L/D 7 without RRVD or with RRVD. In addition, the RRVD Copper Alloy mass variation has a lower natural frequency and amplitude than the AISI 4340. Based on this research, it was found that the most stable and well-reduced system was in the main system with L/D 8 and using RRVD Copper Alloy mass. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Neurological disorders including neurodegenerative diseases,brain tumors,and stroke are the second leading cause of death and the greatest cause of disability ***,it remains challenging to achieve effective drug delivery to the central nervous system for treatments of neurological diseases due to the blood-brain barrier(BBB).The function of the BBB is regulated by the physiological interactions between various types of cells in the neurovascular unit(NVU).In the NVU,the brain vasculature of the BBB is surrounded by brain pericytes,brain astrocytes,neurons,and microglia(Figure 1).Moreover,the NVU at the levels of arteries and veins includes contractile smooth muscle cells(Schaeffer and Iadecola,2021).

Folate receptor alpha (FRα) has been regarded as a promising target for cancer therapy. Several antibody-based anti-cancer drugs have been developed;however, no inhibitory aptamer, which is more stable and economical, has been screened. In this study, we screened FRα-specific inhibitory aptamers by using a new integrated microfluidic system which was capable of precise control of the shear force (up to nN) that allowed high-affinity ssDNA to be collected and screened. With this optimized approach, the screened aptamer could serve as a great candidate for therapy. © 2023 IEEJ.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder often characterized by motor symptoms such as hypomimia, and a reduction in facial expression. We explored the significance of facial features in identifying PD through static images, focusing on detecting hypomimia. A dataset comprised of PD patients and healthy controls' static facial images were collected and analyzed. Facial feature detection was conducted using OpenCV and Dlib libraries for the precise localization of key landmarks. In the subsequent feature extraction, parameters such as symmetry, eye aspect ratio, mouth corner distance, muscle tension, and mouth aperture ratio were used. Through the standardization of these features, meaningful comparisons across diverse images were made. By analyzing hypomimia-related features alongside traditional facial parameters, the results provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of facial expressions in PD diagnosis. The findings suggested that examining facial features in static images enhances the accuracy of PD detection and understanding of the nuanced motor symptoms associated with the disease. © 2024 IEEE.

Pico scale Turgo turbine (PSTT) is proper as a power plant to be applied for remote areas because of its simple construction, cheap investment cost, and good performance above 35%. However, the design of PSTT is still based on estimation because the wheel diameter and nozzle diameter (D/d) ratio are not yet in reasonable agreement. Furthermore, the literature on D/d affects PSTT performance has not been comprehensive. Accordingly, this study investigates the relation of D/d on PSTT performance and its effect on the U/Vjet. Based on experimental results, the relation of D/d and U/Vjet to PSTT performance is parabolic (expressed by polynomial quadratic);the maximum configuration of D/d of 22, and U/Vjet between 0.42 to 0.47. © 2022, Turbomachinery Society of Japan. Quadcopters have become a popular choice for transporting liquids in various industries due to their versatility and maneuverability. In this research, we compare the effectiveness of two control strategies, Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) and Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID), in achieving stability and calculating the energy requirement of a liquid-carrying quadcopter. We present a detailed modeling, design and simulation analysis of the quadcopter control system with both LQR and PID controllers and evaluate their impact on the quadcopter's energy requirement. Our results show that the LQR controller outperforms the PID controller in terms of performance, achieving up to a 12% decrease in energy requirement. Moreover, the decreased energy requirement resulting from the optimized control strategies also leads to improved performance metrics such as reduced oscillations, steady-state error, and overshoot during the quadcopter's trajectory tracking. Our research highlights the importance of selecting an appropriate control strategy for optimizing the energy need and performance of a liquid-carrying quadcopter. The advantages of using LQR controllers over traditional PID controllers can lead to significant improvements in the quadcopter's overall performance and reduced operational costs. © 2023 IEEE.
