Metrological control of electrolytic sensors for measuring angular deviations: application in monitoring displacements of engineering structures

The work evaluates the metrological reliability of electrolytic sensors (electrolevels) used to determine angular deviations of elements of engineering structures. The motivation for the work resulted from its strategic application to control the stability of civil engineering structures, notably with application in geotechnics (e.g.: different types of dams of interest in engineering). The methodology used is based on the metrological consistency associated with the quality control process of a set of electrolevels submitted, simultaneously, to a careful calibration process, with traceability ensured to a standard angular deviation pattern. Mounted on a rigid bar, but pivoted at one of its ends to allow angular displacements, the output of each electrolevel is compared with the previously calibrated standard, for different controlled conditions of angular deviation imposed on the bar articulated to a center of rotation. The result of the analysis of typical calibration data for nine electrolevels allowed to show that the expression of the uncertainties associated with the calibration measurements performed constitutes an essential foundation to ensure the metrological reliability of the electrolevels, having allowed to validate a method of discard of electrolevels not meeting the allowable tolerance for a specific engineering application. Among the conclusions of the work, it was possible to qualify the statistical treatment of the levels of uncertainty as a sufficiently robust strategy to validate the electrolevels as a reliable instrument for angular displacement measurements, with a level of confidence appropriate to its application in civil engineering.

This study describes the development and comparison of low, intermediate and high pH gradient RP-UHPLC-MS/MS with that of gradient HILIC-MS/MS analysis for a range of fluorofentanyl derivatives including four families of ortho- , meta- and para -regioisomers. High pH RP-UHPLC-MS/MS using an ammonium hydroxide and methanol gradient on a high pH stable SuperC18 column at low temperature was demonstrated to be the most successful chromatographic mode for separating 26 analytes including: regioisomeric fluorofentanyls ( n  = 10); fentanyl analogues (n = 10), despropionyl precursors ( n  = 4) and two commonly encountered related substances (heroin and xylazine). Low and intermediate pH RP-UHPLC failed to afford separation of many of the fluorofentanyl regioisomers on stationary phases possessing complementary selectivity with either acetonitrile or methanol over a wide temperature range. HILIC on a bare silica column using an acetonitrile and ammonium acetate / acetic acid gradient provided good separation of fluorofentanyl regiosiomers except for the despropionyl series. High pH gradient RP-UHPLC was demonstrated to provide orthogonal chromatographic selectivity to that of HILIC in the gradient analysis of 18 fentanyl and related substances. Seven isobaric fluorofentanyl structural isomers could be readily discriminated from the unique fragmentation ions obtained using positive electrospray ionization MS/MS. The optimum high pH RP-UHPLC chromatographic conditions for the separation of the fluorofentanyls was equally successful for the rapid separation of a wide range of fentanyl regio- and structural isomers.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has demonstrated the ability to extract insights from data, but the issue of fairness remains a concern in high-stakes fields such as healthcare. Despite extensive discussion and efforts in algorithm development, AI fairness and clinical concerns have not been adequately addressed. In this paper, we discuss the misalignment between technical and clinical perspectives of AI fairness, highlight the barriers to AI fairness’ translation to healthcare, advocate multidisciplinary collaboration to bridge the knowledge gap, and provide possible solutions to address the clinical concerns pertaining to AI fairness. © 2023, CC BY.

Rapidly evolving cell-based therapies in clinical trials demand alternative approaches for efficient expansion of adherent cell types such as human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). Using microcarriers (MCs) suspended in a bioreactor provides a higher surface-to-volume ratio for cell culture. Following cell expansion and detachment from microcarriers, a novel approach which utilizes inertial focusing to separate MCs from the final cell suspensions is demonstrated. Collagen, which is often used in healthcare materials and biomedical research, is largely extracted from animal sources. Recombinant human collagen has the potential to be a promising alternative to animal collagen which has many shortcomings, including immunogenicity and lack of biocompatibility. Currently, recombinant human collagen has been expressed in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic hosts with varying degrees of success. One issue with recombinant collagen across all hosts is the inability to achieve full length collagen with native amounts of post-translational modifications, prompting much exciting research in this direction. There has also been much effort in improving yield and biomimicry of recombinant collagen. This review discusses collagen structure and current methods for extracting animal collagen, before introducing current research in synthesising recombinant human collagen in various hosts, and finally highlighting challenges in the field. © 2017 Eng. Hydroxyapatite (HA) powders were prepared via chemical solution through aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid. The calcium precursor was extracted from the calcium carbonate of Corbiculacea shells while the phosphate precursor originated from the commercially available phosphoric acid. The final product of HA powders is then manipulated through the sintering process at 500°C while the other sample was used as it is. XRD result shows significant changes in its crystallinity, crystallite size and lattice parameters after the sintering process. By sintering the HA, the crystallite size and crystallinity were increases as much as 6.25% and 5.31% respectively. SEM on the other hand showed different morphology for both sintering and non-sintering HA powders. For the sintering HA, the grains size is higher which is 5.00μm compared to non-sintering HA which is 3.91μm due to the agglomeration.

In this work, a new chitosan (CS)/hyaluronic acid (HA)/hydroxyapatite (HAP) hydrogels were synthesized by using gamma rays irradiation technique for oral delivery of drugs. The hydrogelss were characterized using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the physicochemical properties of shrimp chitosan was determined with both FTIR and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The use of the hydrogel samples as a drug delivery system was investigated by an anticancer drug. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) was used as a model anticancer drug to investigate the drug uptake and release kinetics of hydrogels. The properties of the hydrogels were evaluated in terms of swelling, drug uptake and release behaviours. The addition of hyaluronic acid and hydroxyapatite in the gel structure improved drug uptake and release capability of the new hydrogels.

Metal is common as medical devices. Stainless steel (SS316L) has low carbon composition in order to increase corrosion resistance. The release of stainless steel ions can occur due to corrosion and affect the surface roughness. This study determined the influence of pH level of saliva on the concentration of nickel ions release and the surface roughness of SS316L. Twelve specimens of SS316L sized (10x10x1)mm were divided into 3 groups (artificial saliva with pH 3, 5, and 7). Samples were stored in the incubator at 37°C for 14 days. The concentration of nickel ions released was measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (ppm). The surface roughness was measured before and after the immersion using surface roughness measuring instrument (μm). The result showed the concentration of nickel ion released (ppm) were 0.099±0.023 (pH 3), 0.045±0.020 (pH 5), and 0.000±0.000 (pH 7). While the surface roughness (μm) were 0.22±0.06 (pH 3), 0.12±0.04 (pH 5), and 0.1±0.03 (pH 7). Public health-related misinformation spread rapidly in online networks, particularly, in social media during any disease outbreak. Misinformation of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) drug protocol or presentation of its treatment from untrusted sources have shown dramatic consequences on public health. Authorities are utilizing several surveillance tools to detect, and slow down the rapid misinformation spread online, still millions of misinformation are found online. However, there is no currently available tool for receiving real-time misinformation notification during online health or COVID-19 related inquiries. Our proposed novel combinational approach, where we have integrated machine learning techniques with novel search engine misinformation notifier extension (SEMiNExt), helps to understand which news or information is from unreliable sources in real-time. The extension filters the search results and shows notification beforehand;it is a new and unexplored approach to prevent the spread of misinformation. To validate the user query, SEMiNExt transfers the data to a machine learning algorithm or classifier which predicts the authenticity of the search inquiry and sends a binary decision as either true or false. The results show that the supervised learning algorithm works best when 80% of the data set have been used for training purpose. Also, 10-fold cross-validation demonstrate a maximum accuracy and F1-score of 84.3% and 84.1% respectively for the Decision Tree classifier while the K-nearest-neighbor (KNN) algorithm shows the least performance. The SEMiNExt approach has introduced the possibility to improve online health communication system by showing misinformation notifications in real-time which enables safer web-based searching while inquiring on health-related issues. © 2020, CC BY.
