Selenium and tellurium are among the few elements that form ABO3 perovskite structures with a four valent ion in the A site. This leads to highly distorted structures and unusual magnetic behavior. Here we investigate the Co and Ni selenite and tellurite compounds, CoSeO3, CoTeO3, NiSeO3, and NiTeO3, using first principles calculations. We find an interplay of crystal field and Jahn-Teller distortions that underpin the electronic and magnetic properties. While all compounds are predicted to show an insulating G-type antiferromagnetic ground state, there is a considerable difference in the anisotropy of the exchange interactions between the Ni and Co compounds. This is related to the Jahn-Teller distortion. Finally, we observe that these four compounds show characteristics generally associated with Mott insulators, even when described at the level of standard density functional theory. These are then dense bulk insulators that are correctly described as insulators in a standard band structure picture but that satisfy the common experimental criteria to classify them as Mott-type insulators.

We examine the relationship between sleep, glymphatics and Alzheimer's disease (AD), and recent work questioning glymphatic clearance during sleep. We highlight a need for understanding glymphatic and/or other mechanism of clearance during sleep, and review glymphatic flow measurement methods. Further, we explore dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) potential to mitigate AD sleep disturbances and enhance clearance. Further research could elucidate a linkage between DORAs, improved sleep and reducing AD pathophysiology.

We present a second near-infrared (NIR-II) self-checking molecule, LET-1052, for acidic tumor microenvironment (TME) turn-on photothermal therapy (PTT), followed by viscosity based therapeutic efficacy evaluation by itself in two independent channels, denoted as “self-checking” strategy. In acidic TME, LET-1052 was protonated and turned on NIR-II absorption for PTT under 1064 nm laser irradiation. Subsequently, PTT-induced cellular death increases intracellular viscosity, which inhibited the intramolecular rotation of LET-1052, resulting in the enhancement of NIR-I fluorescence for real-time evaluation of PTT efficacy. After PTT of tumor-bearing mice for different periods of NIR-II laser irradiation, NIR-I fluorescence in the tumor region showed positive correlation with tumor growth inhibition rate, demonstrating reliable and prompt prediction of PTT efficacy. The strategy may be expanded for instant evaluation of other therapeutic modalities for personalized medicine.
