The onset of coronary heart disease may be governed by distribution and magnitude of hemodynamic shear stress in the coronary arteries. This study numerically examines pulsatile blood flow through the left coronary artery system. A triphasic waveform is employed to simulate pulsating flow. Five non-Newtonian models, as well as the usual Newtonian model, are used to describe the viscous shear-thinning behavior of blood. It is concluded that when using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to numerically investigate blood velocity profiles within small arteries, such the coronary artery system examined in this work, great care should be taken in choosing a blood viscosity model. It is suggested that the generalized power law model be the viscous shear thinning model of choice. When using CFD to investigate only patterns of wall shear stresses, the model selection is not as crucial and the simple Newtonian model will suffice but when the magnitude of WSS is of great importance, as in the case of the determining the development of coronary artery disease, the model selection is key

The implementation of a new teaching approach in biomedicalengineering that is centered on the integration of lecture and lab was discussed. The underlying motivation of this approach is to enhance the retention of the fundamental concepts by students through the concurrent offering of lecture and hands-on laboratory experiment. This methodology has several benefits such as ability to quickly address student misunderstandings during lecture and reinforcing complex technical concepts through hands-on activities to provide the students with a real world application of the concepts. The overall effectiveness of this style of teaching has benefited the students and even made the course more interesting and exciting for the faculty to teach.

A vertical laboratory method currently being developed and implemented into the Introduction to biomedicalengineering class at Bucknell University, is discussed. This vertical laboratory centers on a few experimental setups that can be utilized to offer a range of hands-on experiences that vary in complexity and allow students to focus on concepts being presented instead of the experimental set-up. This vertical laboratory procedure was not only utilized within distinct section topics in class, but it was used throughout the entire class. This methodology can be used throughout the curriculum and experimental setups seen in one class can be used across the curriculum to further deeper conceptual knowledge.

The introduction of engineering Problem Solving for Future Teachers course to assess changes in students' attitudes and knowledge in an engineering for educators class was discussed. Students attitudes towards engineering science were taken through the use of a 20 question survey. Students were presented with statements and had to answer on a 6 point scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The results show that students' attitudes to engineering science have significantly improved, and they are more likely to include engineering concepts in their future classes.
