The availability of cost effective and fast genome sequencing techniques has paved the way for a personalized medical practice. The new sequencing technology produces huge datasets with different characteristics and the analysis has evolved from a single program to a workflow of tens of analytical steps, starting from the analysis of raw data until generating clinical reports. The mix between big data, analysis workflows, and clinical requirements has shaped the field of clinical bioinformatics. In this paper, we review the basic components of this field, including computational infrastructure, analytical workflows, and knowledge bases for interpretation of results and for reaching clinical decisions. © 2017 IEEE.

Les plaquettes dans les CP sont la principale source de facteurs responsables de manifestations inflammatoires et/ou allergiques. Les plaquettes, durant leur conservation, secrètent de nombreux BRM, qui sont des ligands pour des récepteurs des cellules endothéliales et pour la plupart des types leucocytaires circulants ou adhérents aux endothéliums. Nos travaux permettent de préciser les mécanismes par lesquels des surnageants plaquettaires conduisent à activer les cellules endothéliales, en fonction de la durée de stockage des CP et s’ils ont déclenché un EIR. Pour cela, des CP au jour de préparation (considérés comme témoins), des CP au jour de délivrance ainsi que des CP ayant entrainé un EIR, ont été collectés. Des cellules endothéliales ***926 cultivées, in vitro, ont ensuite été mises en présence des différents surnageants plaquettaires. Par la suite, l’étude du signalosome des cellules endothéliales a été réalisée par des techniques de biologie moléculaire. Nos résultats indiquent que certains gènes impliqués dans l’inflammation des cellules endothéliales sont plus ou moins exprimés en fonction des stimulations. L’analyse de l’expression de marqueurs d’activation, d’apoptose ainsi que la production de facteurs inflammatoires solubles des cellules endothéliales a également mis en évidence des différences d’expression en fonction des surnageants plaquettaires. Cette étude est complétée par un « Woud healing test ». Ce criblage a permis d’identifier des gènes d’intérêt afin d’étudier les expressions protéiques membranaires et/ou solubles possiblement consécutives.

The human visual system employs a mechanism of visual attention, which selects only part of the incoming information for further processing. Through this mechanism, the brain avoids overloading its limited cognitive capacities. In computer vision, this task is usually accomplished through saliency detection, which outputs the regions of an image that are distinctive with respect to its surroundings. This ability is desirable in many technological applications, such as image compression, video quality assessment and content-based image retrieval. In this paper, a saliency detection method based on color distance with sparse random samples and joint upsampling is presented. This approach computes full-resolution saliency maps with short runtime by leveraging both edge-preserving smoothing and joint upsampling capabilities of the Fast Global Smoother. The proposed method is assessed through precision-recall curves, F-measure and average runtime on the MSRA1K dataset. Results show that the method is competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms in both saliency detection accuracy and runtime. © 2016 IEEE.

The conventional method of estimating joint moments needs kinematic data measured with a 3D optical motion measurement system and ground reaction forces measured with force plate. However, the conventional method is limited generally to laboratory use because of the required measurement systems. Therefore, we proposed a convenient method to estimate joint moments from measurements only with inertial sensors for application to clinical evaluation of motor function of paralyzed and elderly subjects. In this paper, multi-link modeling of the trunk was examined for reliable estimation of joint moments only from measured data with inertial sensors attached on the body. Body segment parameters (segment length and mass, center of mass location and moments of inertia) were calculated from anthropometric data. Experimental test with 3 healthy subjects showed that segmented trunk model estimated joint moments better than a rigid trunk model for squat and sit-to-stand movements. The estimation results were not different largely between the 5-link model that modeled the trunk by 3 segments and the 4-link model that modeled the trunk by 2 segments. However, trunk modeling for 4-link model was suggested to be appropriate when the upper and the middle trunk segments of the 5-link model were modeled as one segment. BACKGROUND:The COVID-19 pandemic was an unprecedent challenge to public health systems, with 95% of cases in Quebec sent home for self-isolation. To ensure continuous care, we implemented an intervention supported by a patient portal (Opal) to remotely monitor at-home patients with COVID-19 via daily self-reports of symptoms, vital signs, and mental health that were reviewed by health care professionals. OBJECTIVE:We describe the intervention's implementation, focusing on the (1) process; (2) outcomes, including feasibility, fidelity, acceptability, usability, and perceived response burden; and (3) barriers and facilitators encountered by stakeholders. METHODS:The implementation followed a co-design approach operationalized through patient and stakeholder engagement. The intervention included a 14-day follow-up for each patient. In the mixed methods study at the McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, Quebec, participants completed questionnaires on implementation outcomes on days 1, 7, and 14. All scores were examined against predefined success thresholds. Linear mixed models and generalized estimating equations were used to assess changes in scores over time and whether they differed by sex, age, and race. Semistructured interviews were conducted with expert patients, health care professionals, and coordinators for the qualitative analysis and submitted to thematic analysis guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research. RESULTS:In total, 51 participants were enrolled between December 2020 and March 2021; 49 (96%) were included in the quantitative analysis. Observed recruitment and retention rates (51/52, 98% and 49/51, 96%) met the 75% feasibility success threshold. Over 80% of the participants found it "quite easy/very easy" to complete the daily self-report, with a completion rate (fidelity) of >75% and a nonsignificant decreasing trend over time (from 100%, 49/49 to 82%, 40/49; P=.21). Image retargeting has seen many applications in areas such as content adaptation for small displays and thumbnailing for image database browsing. Most retargeting methods, however, are too expensive computationally to achieve fast performance on common desktop systems. This work addresses the problem of fast automatic thumbnailing for image browsing. A simple approach of automatic thresholding saliency maps and cropping using bounding box extraction is presented. Eight of the fastest saliency detectors in the literature and three automatic thresholding methods are assessed using precision, recall, F-score and execution time on the MSRA1K dataset. The results show that the approach is computationally efficient and adequate for fast automatic image thumbnailing. In particular, saliency detection with difference to random color samples (RS) thresholded by Rosin's method achieved the best trade-off between execution time and F-score. © 2016 ACM.

Background: Evidence on the potential interactive effects of heat and ambient air pollution on cause-specific mortality is inconclusive and limited to selected locations. Objectives: We investigated the effects of heat on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality and its modification by air pollution during summer months (six consecutive hottest months) in 482 locations across 24 countries. Methods: Location-specific daily death counts and exposure data (e.g., particulate matter with diameters ≤ 2.5 µm [PM2.5]) were obtained from 2000 to 2018. We used location-specific confounder-adjusted Quasi-Poisson regression with a tensor product between air temperature and the air pollutant. We extracted heat effects at low, medium, and high levels of pollutants, defined as the 5th, 50th, and 95th percentile of the location-specific pollutant concentrations. Country-specific and overall estimates were derived using a random-effects multilevel meta-analytical model. Results: Heat was associated with increased cardiorespiratory mortality. Moreover, the heat effects were modified by elevated levels of all air pollutants in most locations, with stronger effects for respiratory than cardiovascular mortality. For example, the percent increase in respiratory mortality per increase in the 2-day average summer temperature from the 75th to the 99th percentile was 7.7% (95% Confidence Interval [CI] 7.6–7.7), 11.3% (95%CI 11.2–11.3), and 14.3% (95% CI 14.1–14.5) at low, medium, and high levels of PM2.5, respectively. Similarly, cardiovascular mortality increased by 1.6 (95%CI 1.5–1.6), 5.1 (95%CI 5.1–5.2), and 8.7 (95%CI 8.7–8.8) at low, medium, and high levels of O3, respectively. Discussion: We observed considerable modification of the heat effects on cardiovascular and respiratory mortality by elevated levels of air pollutants. Therefore, mitigation measures following the new WHO Air Quality Guidelines are crucial to enhance better health and promote sustainable development. © 2023
