In text categorization (TC), which is a supervised technique, a feature vector of terms or phrases is usually used to represent the documents. Due to the huge number of terms in even a moderate-size text corpus, high dimensional feature space is an intrinsic problem in TC. Random subspace method (RSM), a technique that divides the feature space to smaller ones each submitted to a (base) classifier (BC) in an ensemble, can be an effective approach to reduce the dimensionality of the feature space. Inspired by a similar research on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of brain, here we address the estimation of ensemble parameters, i.e., the ensemble size (L) and the dimensionality of feature subsets (M) by defining three criteria: usability, coverage, and diversity of the ensemble. We will show that relatively medium M and small L yield an ensemble that improves the performance of a single support vector machine, which is considered as the state-of-the-art in TC. © 2010 IEEE.

We present a modified Temporal Conditional Random Fields framework for modeling and predicting object motion. To facilitate such a powerful graphical model with prediction and come up with a CRF-based predictor, we propose a set of new temporal relations for object tracking, with feature functions such as optical flow (calculated among consequent frames). We evaluate our proposed Temporal Conditional Random Field method with real and synthetic data sequences and will show that the TCRF prediction is nearly equivalent with result of template matching. Experimental results show that our proposed method estimates future target state with zero error until target dynamic changes. Our proposed modified CRF method with simple and easy to implement feature functions, can learn any target dynamic, thus, it can predict next state of target with zero error. © 2010 IEEE.

Using a machine learning algorithm for a given application often requires tuning design parameters of the classifier to obtain optimal classification performance without overfitting. In this contribution, we present an evolutionary algorithm based approach for multi-objective optimization of the sensitivity and specificity of a ν-SVM. The ν-SVM is often preferred over the standard C-SVM due to smaller dynamic range of the ν parameter compared to the unlimited dynamic range of the C parameter. Instead of looking for a single optimization result, we look for a set of optimal solutions that lie along the Pareto optimality front. The traditional advantage of using the Pareto optimality is of course the flexibility to choose any of the solutions that lies on the Pareto optimality front. However, we show that simply maximizing sensitivity and specificity over the Pareto front leads to parameters that appear to be mathematically optimal yet still cause overfitting. We propose a multiple objective optimization approach with three objective functions to find additional parameter values that do not cause overfitting. © 2010 IEEE.

Human recognition based on the iris biometric is severely impacted when encountering non-ideal images of the eye characterized by occluded irises, motion and spatial blur, poor contrast, and illumination artifacts. This paper discusses the use of the periocular region surrounding the iris, along with the iris texture patterns, in order to improve the overall recognition performance in such images. Periocular texture is extracted from a small, fixed region of the skin surrounding the eye. Experiments on the images extracted from the Near Infra-Red (NIR) face videos of the Multi Biometric Grand Challenge (MBGC) dataset demonstrate that valuable information is contained in the periocular region and it can be fused with the iris texture to improve the overall identification accuracy in non-ideal situations. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper introduces the design and realization of a wearable device for dietary and physical activity monitoring. This design is based on technological advances in microelectronics and our previous prototypes which have verified the system concept. From our results, it is shown that the device meets all functional requirements as well as size and power consumption constraints essential to participants' use. With further technological development, we believe that the size of the system can be reduced and accurate and objective dietary assessments will become possible.

In this paper, we present a novel visual codebook learning approach towards compactness and scale-invariance for dense patch image encoding. Firstly, each image is described as a bag of orderless gridding local patches, each of which is expressed in three scales. Then a unified objective function is proposed to simultaneously enforce the codebook compactness and select the optimal scale for each local patch, and a convergency provable iterative procedure is utilized for optimization. A direct advantage of the new codebook is that each local patch is essentially described by its best scale, and thus shares certain characteristic of SIFT yet not constrained to any salient point detectors. The experiments on PASCAL 07 dataset validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed method for image classification task.

The ever increasing diversification of Web services and software applications poses a real challenge to developers and designers when creating software that has to cope with a myriad of interaction situations, as well as specific directives for ensuring an accessible interaction. Utilizing an advanced web services accessibility assessment tool, they can obtain a better understanding of the accessibility constraints for people with disabilities within Web services and software application's user interfaces. The proposed Web services assessment tool will assist them, with a minimal effort, to explore user-centered design and important accessibility issues for their software implementations. In an effort to solve such issues, this paper takes a step forward and introduces the notion of accessibility in the web service domain, in order to enhance web services with accessibility features capable to ensure that HCI through applications utilizing them is accessible.
