As a natural consequence of steady increase of average population age in developed countries, Alzheimer's disease is becoming an increasingly important public health concern. The financial and emotional toll of the disease is exacerbated with lack of standard diagnostic procedures available at the community clinics and hospitals, where most patients are evaluated. In our recent preliminary results, we have reported that the event related potentials (ERPs) of the electroencephalogram can be used to train an ensemble-based classifier for automated diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we present an updated alternative approach by combining complementary information provided by ERPs obtained from several parietal region electrodes. The results indicate that ERPs obtained from parietal region of the cortex carry substantial complementary diagnostic information. Specifically, the diagnostic ability of such an approach is substantially better, compared to the performance obtained by using data from any of the individual electrodes alone. Furthermore, the diagnostic performance of the proposed approach compares very favorably to that obtained at community clinics and hospitals.

We propose adaptive nonlinear auto-associative modeling (ANAM) based on Locally Linear Embedding algorithm (LLE) for learning intrinsic principal features of each concept separately and recognition thereby. Unlike traditional supervised manifold learning algorithm, the proposed ANAM algorithm has several advantages: 1) it implicitly embodies discriminant information because the suboptimal parameters of ANAM are determined based on error rate of the validation set. 2) it avoids the curse of dimensionality without loss accuracy because recognition is completed in the original space. Experiments on character and digit databases show that the advantages of the proposed ANAM algorithm. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Palmprint-based personal identification, as a new member in the biometrics family, has become an active research topic in recent years. Although great progress has been made, how to represent palmprint for effective classification is still an open problem. In this paper, we present a novel palmprint representation - ordinal measure, which unifies several major existing palmprint algorithms into a general framework. In this framework, a novel palmprint representation method, namely orthogonal line ordinal features, is proposed. The basic idea of this method is to qualitatively compare two elongated, line-like image regions, which are orthogonal in orientation and generate one bit feature code. A palmprint pattern is represented by thousands of ordinal feature codes. In contrast to the state-of-the-art algorithm reported in the literature, our method achieves higher accuracy, with the equal error rate reduced by 42% for a difficult set, while the complexity of feature extraction is halved.

Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (V-BLAST) is a promising system that realizes the enormous capacity of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications. We present an extension of V-BLAST, and propose an effective transmit power allocation scheme for the extended system. The proposed transmit power allocation scheme minimizes the bit error rate (BER) averaged over all detection stages, and requires small feedback overhead from the receiver to the transmitter. Simulation results show that the extended V-BLAST system with the proposed transmit power allocation scheme provides a significant reduction in the BER compared to the conventional V-BLAST system. When the minimum mean square error (MMSE) nulling is adopted, the extended V-BLAST system is found to achieve the BER performance comparable to that of the maximum likelihood (ML) detection for the conventional V-BLAST architecture.

We propose a text scanner which detects wide text strings in a sequence of scene images. For scene text detection, we use a multiple-CAMShift algorithm on a text probability image produced by a multi-layer perceptron. To provide enhanced resolution of the extracted text images, we perform the text detection process after generating a mosaic image in a fast and robust image registration method.

Clustering has been widely used in areas as pattern recognition, data analysis and image processing. Recently, clustering algorithms have been recognized as one of a powerful tool for data mining. However, the well-known clustering algorithms offer no solution to the case of large mixed incomplete data sets. The authors comment the possibilities of application of the methods, techniques and philosophy of the logical combinatorial approach for clustering in these kinds of data sets. They present the new clustering algorithm DGLC for discovering /spl beta//sub 0/-density connected components from large mixed incomplete data sets. This algorithm combines the ideas of logical combinatorial pattern recognition with the density based notion of cluster. Finally, an example is showed in order to illustrate the work of the algorithm.

Fast computation of three-dimensional (3-D) moments is an important and pragmatic problem. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm together with suitable systolic structure for the fast computation of 3-D moments, extending our method for fast computation of 2-D moments. A scalable systolic structure, consisting of adders and latches, fully exploits parallelism of the network architecture and is very suitable for hardware implementation. Our new method, which also dispenses with the need for multiplication, is suitable for both binary images and gray level images. We also extend our method to efficient computation of k-dimensional (k-D) moments (k > 3).

We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.
