In this paper we examine some foundational issues of a class of quantum engines where the system consists of a single quantum parametric oscillator, operating in an Otto cycle consisting of 4 stages of two alternating phases: the isentropic phase is detached from any bath (thus a closed system) where the natural frequency of the oscillator is changed from one value to another, and the isothermal phase where the system (now rendered open) is put in contact with one or two squeezed baths of different temperatures, whose nonequilibrium dynamics follows the Hu-Paz-Zhang (HPZ) master equation for quantum Brownian motion. The HPZ equation is an exact nonMarkovian equation which preserves the positivity of the density operator and is valid for a) all temperatures, b) arbitrary spectral density of the bath, and c) arbitrary coupling strength between the system and the bath. Taking advantage of these properties we examine some key foundational issues of theories of quantum open and squeezed systems for these two phases of the quantum Otto engines. This include, i) the nonMarkovian regimes for non-Ohmic, low temperature baths, ii) what to expect in nonadiabatic frequency modulations, iii) strong system-bath coupling, as well as iv) the proper junction conditions between these two phases. Our aim here is not to present ways for attaining higher efficiency but to build a more solid theoretical foundation for quantum engines of continuous variables covering a broader range of parameter spaces hopefully of use for exploring such possibilities. The prototype Large-Sized Telescope (LST-1) of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) is in commissioning phase at the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos at 2200 m a.s.l. in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). LST-1 is a 23-m diameter telescope and is the first of four that will compose the LST part of the CTAO Northern array. The LST subarray is optimized to provide the best sensitivity for gamma rays in the 20 GeV - 200 GeV energy range. The MAGIC telescopes, which are located approximately 100 m from the LST-1, is operating as a two 17-m telescope stereoscopic system for more than 14 years. LST-1 and MAGIC routinely perform joint observations of gamma-ray sources to exploit the potential of the three-telescope system. This contribution describes the analysis pipeline and evaluates the performance of the system using Monte Carlo simulations and data on the Crab Nebula. The sensitivity achieved during joint observations with MAGIC and LST-1 is about 30% higher than that of MAGIC alone. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

In a series of three companion papers published in this Journal, we identify and validate the available thermal stress indicators (TSIs). In this first paper of the series, we conducted a systematic review (registration: INPLASY202090088) to identify all TSIs and provide reliable information regarding their use (funded by EU Horizon 2020;HEAT-SHIELD). Eight databases (PubMed, Agricultural and Environmental science Collection, Web of science, Scopus, Embase, Russian science Citation Index, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar) were searched from database inception to 15 April 2020. No restrictions on language or study design were applied. Of the 879 publications identified, 232 records were considered for further analysis. This search identified 340 instruments and indicators developed between 200 BC and 2019 AD. Of these, 153 are nomograms, instruments, and/or require detailed non-meteorological information, while 187 can be mathematically calculated utilizing only meteorological data. Of these meteorology-based TSIs, 127 were developed for people who are physically active, and 61 of those are eligible for use in occupational settings. Information regarding the equation, operating range, interpretation categories, required input data, as well as a free software to calculate all 187 meteorology-based TSIs is provided. The information presented in this systematic review should be adopted by those interested in performing on-site monitoring and/or big data analytics for climate services to ensure appropriate use of the meteorology-based TSIs. Studies two and three in this series of companion papers present guidance on the application and validation of these TSIs, to guide end users of these indicators for more effective use. © 2022 The Author(s). A decade has passed since high-energy astrophysical neutrinos have been discovered by IceCube, however the corresponding sources have not been fully identified yet. The reported coincidence of the high-energy IceCube-170922A with the gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 is not enough to claim that blazars are the dominant high-energy neutrino emitters in the Universe. In fact, recently IceCube announced a second correlation with NGC 1068, a nearby Seyfert galaxy, which is significantly different from a gamma-emitting blazars. The hunt for counterparts of the IceCube neutrinos using gamma-ray telescopes started in 2012. Nonetheless, these efforts will continue with the next-generation gamma-ray telescopes, such as the CTA Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) and other telescopes, by means of an improved and revised observation strategy. These new observations will allow us to detect enough sources in order to elucidate the mystery of the neutrino emitters. In this contribution, we introduces the efforts made thus far in the search for gamma-ray counterpart of high-energy IceCube events using the current generation IACTs, focusing on alerts made of multiple neutrinos events, and present an idea to improve in the observational strategies with the CTA LSTs that will become operational in the coming decade. We will discuss how to reduce the bias to gamma-ray emitters in order to search for possible neutrino counterparts. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

The development of new approach methodologies (NAMs) to replace current in vivo testing for the safety assessment of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is hindered by the scarcity of validated experimental data for a broad range of ENMs. We introduce a framework to address this challenge by harnessing the collective expertise of professionals from multiple complementary and related fields (‘wisdom of crowds’ or WoC). By integrating expert insights, we aim to fill data gaps and generate consensus concern scores for diverse ENMs, thereby enhancing the predictive power of nanosafety computational models. Our investigation reveals an alignment between expert opinion and experimental data, providing robust estimations of concern levels. Building upon these findings, we employ predictive machine learning models trained on the newly defined concern scores, ENM descriptors, and gene expression profiles, to quantify potential harm across various toxicity endpoints. These models further revealed key genes potentially involved in underlying toxicity mechanisms. Notably, genes associated with metal ion homeostasis, inflammation, and oxidative stress emerge as predictors of ENM toxicity across diverse endpoints. This study showcases the value of integrating expert knowledge and computational modeling to address the complexity of nanomaterial safety. Our work suggests that this interdisciplinary approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of safety assessment in the rapidly evolving landscape of nanotechnology. © 2025, The Authors. Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will be the next generation gamma-ray observatory. It will consist of three different sizes of telescopes, with a collective improvement of about an order of magnitude in sensitivity, compared with the current generation gamma-ray telescopes. LargeSized Telescopes (LSTs) will be the most sensitive at energies from tens of GeV up to a few TeVs, and will be the best suited to observe gamma-ray sources such as Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). The first Large-Sized Telescope prototype (LST-1), inaugurated in 2018 and currently in commissioning phase, has accumulated more than one thousand hours of data to date. From 2020 to 2022, we have detected various gamma-ray sources, and prominent among them are several well-known AGN, like Mrk 421, Mrk 501, 1ES 1959+650, 1ES 0647+250, PG 1553+113, etc. We report on light curves and energy spectra reconstructed out of these observations down to energies of tens of GeV, which is very close to the energy threshold of LST-1. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.

Changes in intracellular hydrogen peroxide concentration ([HO]) constitute an important signal controlling cellular adaptations. In response to cooling, decreases in [HO] and changes in antioxidant-related gene expression have been observed in skeletal muscle. However, the specific temperature dependence of cooling-induced [HO] changes and their quantitative relationship to induced gene expression are unknown. This investigation tested the hypothesis that differences in muscle cytosolic and mitochondrial [HO] changes during cooling/rewarming determine the pattern of HO-related gene expression. HO-sensitive cytosolic (HyPer7) and mitochondrial (MLS-HyPer7) fluorescent proteins were expressed into tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of male C57BL/6J mice. The temperature dependence of [HO] was determined via in vivo imaging during 3-minute cooling protocol from 35°C to 0°C. Two cooling patterns (6 bouts of intermittent cooling, I-Cool vs. sustained cooling, S-Cool; both to 13°C) were applied over 60 min. Three hours after cooling, the muscles were removed and gene expression was evaluated using real-time PCR. The decrease in [HO] was observed in both cytosolic and mitochondrial compartments from 35°C to 13°C, but was of greater magnitude in the cytosol; in contrast, further cooling from 12°C to 0°C induced a rebound increase especially in cytosolic [HO]. I-Cool increased the mRNA level of Nrf2 (+15%, p < 0.001). S-Cool decreased the mRNA levels of Sod2, Cat, and Ucp3 (i.e., -20%, -23%, and -30%, respectively, p<0.05). In conclusion, the greatest decrease in temperature-dependent [HO] occurred at 13°C in the cytosolic and mitochondrial compartments of muscle fibers and I-Cool increased Nrf2 mRNA expression, while S-Cool decreased several antioxidant-related genes.

Herein, we report on the synthesis and characterization of p-type semiconductor indium phosphide/zinc sulphide (InP/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) prepared via a simple solvothermal method and their potential application in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) flexible solar cell (SC). The BHJ SC composed of donor–acceptor (D-A) configuration at nanoscale provides larger interfacial junction area throughout the bulk volume of the photo-absorber D-A blend that facilitates excitons to efficiently dissociate within the bulk layer at D-A interface. Hence, InP/ZnS core–shell QDs and a fullerene derivative – phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) – are used as hybrid inorganic–organic D-A materials, respectively, to fabricate Ag/LiF/InP/ZnS-PCBM/P3HT/ITO/PET BHJ flexible SC. Indium tin oxide (ITO) coated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), lithium fluoride (LiF) and silver (Ag) are employed as a flexible substrate, hole transport layer (HTL), electron transport layer (ETL) and counter electrode, respectively. Photovoltaic (PV) properties of the fabricated BHJ flexible SC are studied under standard testing conditions (STC) i.e., 25 ⁰C, 1.5 AM global and 100 mW/cm² irradiation, which exhibit fill factor (FF) of 59 ± 0.02 % and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.22 ± 0.05 %. Also, the heterojunction characteristics are investigated in dark condition (0 lx) to find series resistance (R_s), ideality factor (n), and reverse saturation current (I₀). X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy are performed to further investigate the properties of InP/ZnS-PCBM thin films. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image of InP/ZnS core/shell QDs confirmed the successful synthesis of QDs having an average size of 5 ± 1 nm.
