Spinal functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is a newly emerging non-invasive imaging technique that has been introduced to study the Blood Oxygenation Level Dependent (BOLD) changes in the spinal cord associated with a certain activity or even at rest. Spinal fMRI is also used to assess the treatment of many dysfunctions affect the spinal cord such as spinal cord injury (SCI) and Multiple sclerosis (MS). The purpose of this paper is to propose a literature review of spinal fMRI studies performed on healthy human volunteers. The studies reviewed are divided based on the paradigm being performed during image acquisition into (1) studies under activities and stimulus which are further classified according to the type of the stimuli, and (2) studies at resting state. Moreover, the limitations of spinal fMRI and how to tackle them are discussed. © 2019 IEEE.

Image-guided surgery (IGS) involves using surgical instruments tracking system to guide the surgeon during invasive surgical procedures. The use of preoperative or intraoperative images is very essential in providing navigation for different medical applications. In this paper, a literature review of different imaging modalities that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) is proposed. The imaging modalities discussed include x-ray fluoroscopy, coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), fractional flow reserve (FFR), cardiac single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) and ultrasound. Additionally, pseudoaneurysms, which can result from percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) procedure, are reviewed as well as the treatment procedure. Finally, a comparison between the different imaging modalities is carried out, based on the number of papers that have been published, in addition to the sensitivity and specificity for each modality according to PubMed and Web of Science databases. © 2019 IEEE.

Biotechnologies are being commercialized at historic rates. In 2020, 74 biotech startups went public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO), and 60 went through the IPO process in the first six months of 2021. However, the traits associated with biotech startups obtaining recent IPOs have not been reported. Here we build a database of biotechs that underwent an IPO in the first half of 2021. By analyzing leadership, technological focus, clinical trials, and financing, we found that advanced degrees among the leadership, clinical trials, and intellectual property are important factors for biotech startups. The data also suggest that large private rounds can decrease time-to-IPO and affect post-IPO stock performance. Notably, these traits were often exhibited by the 138 biotech IPOs in 2018-2019, suggesting 2021 data were not driven by COVID. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper presents the performance of the Source Affine Image reconstruction algorithm (SAFFIRE) on an epileptogemc foci time-varying source localization. This algorithm is based on the recursive implementation of the mimmum mean squared error (MMSE) estimator. The SAFFIRE algorithm is applied on a synthetic EEG signal originated from different sources' scenarios. The simulation results show how the algorithm is able to localize and track the sources as they vary with time with a high resolution even if the sources are located close to each other. © 2019 IEEE.

Chemical neurotransmission is central to neurotypical brain function but also implicated in a variety of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. The release dynamics of neurotransmitters is correlated with but distinct from neuronal electrical signal propagation. It is therefore necessary to track neurotransmitter modulation separately from neuron electrical activity. Here, we present a new approach for imaging deuterated neurotransmitter molecules in the cell-silent window with stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy. Using SRS microscopy, we perform direct imaging of deuterated dopamine and GABA in PC12 chromaffin cells, and in primary hippocampal neurons, respectively, based on the carbon-deuterium vibrational frequencies. We demonstrate that SRS imaging of these isotopologues directly visualizes intracellular neurotransmitters without changing the neurotransmitters’ chemical identity, and requiring custom synthesis or genetic encoding protocols. We further show that stimulation of neurotransmitter release results in an overall 20-50% intracellular neurotransmitter signal reduction in agreement with comparable neurotransmission dynamics studies, with the ability to observe inter- and intracellular variation in vesicular neurotransmitter release. Taken together, our data suggest that neurotransmitter isotopologues can serve as a commercially-available, biocompatible, and generalizable method to image neurotransmitters with deuterated molecules that are virtually chemically identical to their native counterparts. © 2022, CC BY.

Forests are not only the most predominant of the Earth's terrestrial ecosystems,but are also the core supply for essential products for human ***,global climate change and ongoing population explosion severely threatens the health of the forest ecosystem and aggravtes the deforestation and forest *** genomics has great potential of increasing forest productivity and adaptation to the changing *** the last two decades,the field of forest genomics has advanced quickly owing to the advent of multiple high-throughput sequencing technologies,single cell RNA-seq,clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)-mediated genome editing,and spatial transcriptomes,as well as bioinformatics analysis technologies,which have led to the generation of multidimensional,multilayered,and spatiotemporal gene expression *** technologies,together with basic technologies routinely used in plant biotechnology,enable us to tackle many important or unique issues in forest biology,and provide a panoramic view and an integrative elucidation of molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying phenotypic changes and *** this review,we recapitulated the advancement and current status of 12 research branches of forest genomics,and then provided future research directions and focuses for each ***,a shift from simple biotechnology-based research to advanced and integrative genomics research,and a setup for investigation and interpretation of many spatiotemporal development and differentiation issues in forest genomics have just begun to emerge.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is characterized by the progressive degeneration of neuronal cells. With the increase in aged population, there is a prevalence of irreversible neurodegenerative changes, causing a significant mental, social, and economic burden globally. The factors contributing to AD are multidimensional, highly complex, and not completely understood. However, it is widely known that aging, neuroinflammation, and excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), along with other free radicals, substantially contribute to oxidative stress and cell death, which are inextricably linked. While oxidative stress is undeniably important in AD, limiting free radicals and ROS levels is an intriguing and potential strategy for deferring the process of neurodegeneration and alleviating associated symptoms. Therapeutic compounds from natural sources have recently become increasingly accepted and have been effectively studied for AD treatment. These phytocompounds are widely available and a multitude of holistic therapeutic efficiencies for treating AD owing to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and biological activities. Some of these compounds also function by stimulating cholinergic neurotransmission, facilitating the suppression of beta-site amyloid precursor protein-cleaving enzyme 1, α-synuclein, and monoamine oxidase proteins, and deterring the occurrence of AD. Additionally, various phenolic, flavonoid, and terpenoid phytocompounds have been extensively described as potential palliative agents for AD progression. Preclinical studies have shown their involvement in modulating the cellular redox balance and minimizing ROS formation, displaying them as antioxidant agents with neuroprotective abilities. This review emphasizes the mechanistic role of natural products in the treatment of AD and discusses the various pathological hypotheses proposed for AD. © 2023 – IOS Press. All rights reserved.

Wearable and implantable BioMEMSs (biomedical microelectromechanical systems) have transformed modern healthcare by enabling continuous, personalized, and minimally invasive monitoring, diagnostics, and therapy. Wearable BioMEMSs have advanced rapidly, encompassing a diverse range of biosensors, bioelectronic systems, drug delivery platforms, and motion tracking technologies. These devices enable non-invasive, real-time monitoring of biochemical, electrophysiological, and biomechanical signals, offering personalized and proactive healthcare solutions. In parallel, implantable BioMEMS have significantly enhanced long-term diagnostics, targeted drug delivery, and neurostimulation. From continuous glucose and intraocular pressure monitoring to programmable drug delivery and bioelectric implants for neuromodulation, these devices are improving precision treatment by continuous monitoring and localized therapy. This review explores the materials and technologies driving advancements in wearable and implantable BioMEMSs, focusing on their impact on chronic disease management, cardiology, respiratory care, and glaucoma treatment. We also highlight their integration with artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), paving the way for smarter, data-driven healthcare solutions. Despite their potential, BioMEMSs face challenges such as regulatory complexities, global standardization, and societal determinants. Looking ahead, we explore emerging directions like multifunctional systems, biodegradable power sources, and next-generation point-of-care diagnostics. Collectively, these advancements position BioMEMS as pivotal enablers of future patient-centric healthcare systems.
