Current and past research has brought up new views related to the optimization of neural networks. For a fixed structure, second order methods are seen as the most promising. From previous works we have shown how second order methods are of easy applicability to a neural network. Namely, we have proved how the Levenberg-Marquard possesses not only better convergence but how it can assure the convergence to a local minima. However, as any gradient-based method, the results obtained depend on the startup point. In this work, a reformulated evolutionary algorithm - the bacterial programming for Levenberg-Marquardt is proposed, as an heuristic which can be used to determine the most suitable starting points, therefore achieving, in most cases, the global optimum.

For extensive utilization of distributed generation with the objectives of more efficient use of energy and introduction of renewable energy sources, the construction of a micro grid at demand end is inevitable. The micro grid should operate independently and have a good neighbor relation with the power grid, which supplies base power to it. A coordinate control scheme of distributed generations is studied. It has three layers of structure. The integrated control system is quite similar to that of power system other than its scale. Because of the limited number of generations and customers, the variation of power unbalance between supply and demand is fast and large. To stabilize the system and maintain power supply quality, the micro grid is subdivided into local distribution network groups. The local group control system regulates generations inside it in coordination with other groups and transmits operational information in it to the integrated control system. Each controllable generation has its own control system and regulates its output with the command from the local group control system. The distributed generation on the market, including the battery energy storage, is generally connected to the network through the power converter system. Because it can not autonomously follow the power variation, a novel control scheme should be incorporated into the control system of power converter system and the local level control. Their performances in operation of a micro grid are verified with simulations using EMTDC/PSCAD. The coordination between local group control systems for the load following control is under test in a model grid for experiment. A demonstration system is planned to construct on this control scheme

In this paper the innovative ALLADIN platform for whole-body isometric force measurements to be used in neuro-rehabilitation for assessing post-stroke functional recovery is presented. A mechatronic approach was used in the design and development of this platform, which consists of an ergonomic mechanical structure embedding eight force/torque sensors that sample data about the performance of simulated activities of daily living in stroke patients. The overall ALLADIN system also includes a dedicated database, where all measures and other clinical scores are stored, and a PDA-based natural language system interface for the therapist. This paper only focuses on the mechatronic platform of the ALLADIN system. The proposed platform, which is currently being validated in three different clinical centers in Europe, aims at offering a brand new method for decision support in neuro-rehabilitation. It calculates and predicts the functional recovery of stroke patients and makes clinical assessments and quantitative measurements easily exchangeable among clinical stroke rehabilitation units

Optical technology offers a new method for generating microwave signals with extremely low noise. For that purpose a long fiber is used in the feedback loop of the oscillator. However, by the application of a long fiber, a lot of resonances appear in the output spectrum impairing the stability of oscillation. This paper introduces two new approaches for improving the frequency stability and reducing the phase noise of opto-electronic oscillators. That goal is achieved in two different ways: one by the insertion of an additional third-harmonic optical loop and another by nonlinear electronic feedback techniques. This way the conversion between the fundamental and harmonic components in the nonlinear active element of the oscillator can be controlled and utilized both for improving the frequency stability and reducing the noise. The combination of these methods results in an optimum adjustment.

An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system is defined as a unified information system, performing all information-processing tasks of a company and realizing an integration of the whole corporation. The aimed scope of duties indicates that these software products are very complex regarding their structure and operation. What is more, ERP systems are almost always standard software products. The parametrizable and configurable structure increases their complexity. We analyse these complex software products. We examine the users' needs and the life-cycle of these systems, determine their components according to the three tier architecture and summarize the requirements against these parts.

Due to legislation and market trends, every electronic appliance assembler has to change leaded solders to lead free. In recent years, a number of manufacturers were simply waiting, and they know little or nothing about the behavior of lead free solders. However, there is now a necessity for lead free solders because the RoHS and WEEE directives are coming into effect by July 2006. To bring to light the particular differences between widely used industrial SnPbAg and SnAgCu solders, a test PCB for conventional SMT devices was designed and experimental soldering was done by IR reflow technology with both alloys.

Spectra and representations of some special weighted graphs are investigated with weight matrices consisting of homogeneous blocks. It is proved that a random perturbation of the weight matrix with a "Wigner-noise" not have an effect on the order of the protruding eigenvalues and the representatives of the vertices unveil the underlying block-structure. Such random graphs adequately describe some biological and communication networks, the vertices of which belong either to loosely connected strata or to clusters with homogeneous edge-densities between any two of them
