The introduction of High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) presents new challenges to be solved in the UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network. Bandwidth reservation for HSDPA is not efficient and TCP cannot efficiently resolve a congestion situation because lower layer retransmissions hide the congestion situations from TCP. An HSDPA Flow Control algorithm was introduced by 3GPP to control congestion. This HSDPA Flow Control algorithm was originally intended to control radio scheduler queues in Node B. In this paper we propose an algorithm that also provides congestion control in the transport network. The performance analysis concentrates on transport network limited scenarios and shows that the algorithm can achieve high end-user perceived throughput, while maintaining low delay and loss in the transport network. The analysis also shows the advantages of the newly introduced congestion detection functionality.

The first part of this paper contains a short review on pr oblems related to distribution system operators' (DSOs) curr ent pr actice regarding earth fault location and sustained faulty operation of compensated networ ks. A new device and method ar e then pr esented that have been implemented recently at Hungarian DSOs. This technique uses curr ent injection par allel to the Petersen coil for fault location, and the same device is further used to decr ease the har monics in the residual fault curr ent during sustained earth-fault oper ation. First field test results are presented. It is also shown that the CTs installed along with the pr oposed device1eliminate the need for the additional resistor that was necessary to select the faulted feeder.

BitTorrent is an efficient peer-to-peer content sharing protocol. In this paper we investigate how this popular technology can be brought to mobile handheld devices. As handheld devices are increasingly used for music and video consumption it is reasonable to consider how a handheld device can join existing communities and be used to find, access, and play multimedia content. The paper is based on the experiences of BitTorrent implementation on mainstream mobile phones (Nokia Series 40) over Java Micro Edition platform. The paper analyses the important implementation issues of such large peer-to-peer application on low end mobile devices and shares practical experiences. The performance of the application is evaluated by speed and memory usage measurements.

Due to the boom in complex network research, large graph datasets appeared in various fields, from social sciences (P. Holme et al., 2004) to computer science (C.R. Myers, 2003), (*** et al., 1999), (A-L. Barabasi and R. Albert, 1999) and biology (L. Negyessy et al., 2006). There is an increasing demand for data mining methods that allow scientists to make sense of the datasets they encounter. In this paper, we present two graph models and two maximum likelihood algorithms that fit these models to pre-defined data. We also show two example applications to illustrate that these algorithms are able to extract interesting and meaningful properties from the data represented by appropriate graphs.

Fuzzy rule based systems have been very popular in many control applications. However, when fuzzy control systems are used in real problems, many rules may be required. The number of rules required depends on the number of inputs and the number of fuzzy linguistic terms used. This exponential explosion of fuzzy rules can take too much computing time to solve any but the simplest problems. This paper proposes a hierarchical fuzzy system that partitions a problem for more efficient computation. The hierarchical fuzzy rule base algorithm constructs rules from data for the purpose of performing fuzzy classification. Illustration examples are also generated and the results show that this hierarchical fuzzy system can be successfully used for classification applications.

This work studies a new stratified motion planning algorithm. The proposed technique is able to lead a stratified system along a restricted class of reference trajectories while the earlier approach aimed only to reach a final state without influencing the trajectory. The suitable class of reference trajectories is still restricted because they should go through a sequence of connected integral submanifolds. A highly oscillatory sequence (HOS) of inputs is built in the method to produce a sequence of trajectories converging to the reference trajectory. The major benefit of the new concept in comparison with the conventional approach emerges when obstacle avoidance is required in the configuration space. The method is demonstrated on a simple model of a hexapod robot.

ATM AAL2 has been selected as the transmission technology in the radio access network of UMTS systems. To suit AAL2 to a network where support for soft handoff is essential, an additional switching level on top of ATM has been developed. AAL2 signalling is a new protocol which is capable of handling on-demand, switched AAL2 connections. For supporting soft handoff, the most important requirement is fast connection setup. A generic model for an AAL2 switch is presented, and a new method is proposed for optimising the distribution of processor resources between the functional entities of the switch in order to achieve the fastest possible connection setup time. Then AAL2 switching networks, resembling the UMTS terrestrial radio access network, are built using an optimised AAL2 switch model, and the performance of the AAL2 signalling protocol is evaluated by simulation. It is shown that further reduction of the connection setup time can be achieved by introducing priority queueing of AAL2 signalling messages.

In this paper we consider the problematic design of safety critical systems for future commercial vehicles. The development of such systems is mainly driven by the social demand that the citizens want to see safer, more reliable vehicles on the roads, which can also handle more complex situations than the human driver can. Redundant electronic systems confront us with new challenges in reliability analysis, since handling and defining their back-up strategies is not a straightforward task by means of using qualitative approaches. It is also questionable whether the well-known approaches of classical reliability theory are appropriate for redundant electronic systems, especially if they are of safety critical nature, such as the electronic brake system that has been used in commercial vehicles in Europe for almost a decade. The paper presents a less widespread and a more widespread technique through reliability theory, which enable the designer organizing functions and subsystems, failures and logical relationships between failures from the system level up-to the last component without missing any of them.

Oscillation of the cerebral blood flow (CBF) is a common feature in several physiological or pathophysiological states of the brain. It is a promising opportunity to identify the state of the brain based on the classification of CBF signals. In order to carry out classification of the time signals, a feature vector has been extracted to characterize the signals. Unsupervised classification showed that the extracted feature vector is an acceptable representation of the time signals. It also turned out that the difference between normal signal and a signal indicating drug injection effect is significant, and much more dominant than the difference between signals of the right and left brain sides. For the signal classification an artificial neural network (ANN) model based on supervised backpropagation network has been developed and successfully applied.

The paper is concerned with the design of the bang-bang control for dual channel DC-DC buck and boost converter. The quality of the control is characterized by two quality figures, the voltage ripple and the voltage error. An optimum design method is described to realize good quality figures. When the output voltage is higher (lower) than the reference voltage the lower (higher) switching frequency is selected. In order to reduce the output voltage ripple the lower switching frequency is changed with the variation of the load. Calculation and simulation results of the two quality figures are presented and compared.
