This article deals with the interference limitations of introducing femtocells in existing mobile networks. Femtocells are cheap alternatives for mobile operators to extend their network and to provide better coverage. However, having more femtocells increases the interference in existing components. Finally, the whole system could lock up itself, if the interference exceeds the maximum acceptable level. The question is the maximum number of femtocells per macrocell. In this article, it will be shown how this limit can be computed analytically - without simulations.

This paper compares the energy and time needed to convey one information unit from source to destination using multi hop networks versus overlay networks. For a set of realistic parameters the paper will show that multi hopping with more than 50 relays will need more time than the overlay network and with respect of energy the usage of more than 6 relays is using more energy than the overlay network. The paper underlines the importance of the idle power value for such calculations.

In this paper we study dynamically changing multicast trees (light-trees) in double-layer optical networks. In this scenario, the continuous changing of multicast endpoints causes the degradation of the tree. Therefore a huge amount of network resources can be spared by regular reconfiguration. The benefit of reconfiguration is investigated for different routing algorithms and reconfiguration periods.

This paper deals with the problem of reroute sequence planning for label switched paths (LSPs) in multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) networks. This problem arises when the path set is recalculated by a global optimization method for achieving a better resource utilization. In this case we have to find a sequence of the one-by-one reconfiguration of the LSPs from their original paths to the optimized paths, with the constraint that the link capacities should not be violated at any time during the reroute process. The problem is computationally hard in real-world situations because of the large amount of routers and LSPs in the network, so that neither exact nor approximation algorithms have practical relevance. We introduce a number of heuristic approaches, which are investigated through extensive empirical tests based on real network topologies. The results reveal the complexity of the problem. We propose possible solutions and suggest future research directions for alternative answers to the reroute sequence planning.

This paper presents a formated navigation with obstacle avoidance in which a modified leader-follower technique is combined with reactive collision avoidance behaviors. Fuzzy signature has a special role in data mining, concerning data mixed with human estimates. The semantics of the fuzzy concept is a relevant issue of data interpretation. A software system was developed to implement these ideas and works on a rather extensive database of a two-decade neuro-developmental project. Another project initiated in the subjects of transition economy and society is ongoing. Delicate problems of sensitivity and the re-thinking of principal component and factor analysis for fuzzy data are current research issues.

This work addresses the design of cost-optimal VoIP networks. In our model the whole VoIP network is divided into two logical components: the access network and the transport network. The access network consists of the VoIP end-points that connect to the transport network through edge routers serving as gateways. Since more edge routers may be available for a given VoIP node, one task of the design process is to assign a particular edge router to every VoIP node. The edge routers have to be connected in such a way that security and availability can be assured for the VoIP traffic. One obvious approach to fulfilling these requirements is to define a VPN, which is assumed throughout the paper. Supposing large volume of VoIP traffic the cost of the VPN can be significant. Thus the other task of VoIP network design is to specify the transport VPN in the most economical way. These two tasks of VoIP network design can be solved separately using existing methods. Nevertheless, the VoIP region specification influences the cost of the final solution to a great extent. Therefore, in This work we propose a novel solution in which the edge router assignment takes the objective function of VPN specification into consideration. Moreover, a numerical analysis is provided with the help of simulations.

In railway train-borne equipment, the driver machine interface (DMI) acts like a bridge between the train driver and the onboard automatic train control system (European Vital Computer, EVC). While the DMI is required to operate in a critical context, current DMIs have no safety requirements. This implies that the EVC may automatically stop the train whenever the DMI is suspected to misbehave, leading to delay of the train, inconvenience for passengers and consequent possible profit loss. For these reasons a DMI with higher safety requirements is worth to be taken into account, even if it implies higher costs. The SAFEDMI European project aims at developing (i) a DMI at Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) using off-the-shelf components and a simple hardware architecture to reduce costs, and (ii) a SIL 2 wireless communication support for maintenance. This paper describes the architecture of a DMI which satisfies these objectives. The main hardware and software characteristics will be shown, including the proposed error detection techniques and the related fault handling (characterized by a new operational mode that allows DMI to restart silently, thus reducing unexpected train stops).

Recent investigations in the field of complex networks include the analysis of distributions of connections in particular networks and the clustering properties of networks. In the first part of my presentation I analyse a network: the dependency graph of the software packages of the Ubuntu distribution of GNU/Linux. It is a directed acyclic graph, and I analyse the degree distribution of the graph for in-degrees (connections directed into a node, the dependent packages), out-degrees (connections directed away from a node) and plain-degrees. I also analyse the clustering properties of the graph. In the second part, I discuss the teaching of these topics at the college level. Using the NetworkX modul for the Python programming language students can easily investigate these properties of the package dependence graph.
