With the dropping prices of multiprocessor desktop computers and high-performance clusters these systems are more and more available to the average user. Thus there is a growing need for applications that take advantage of multiprocessor systems. Automatic parallelization allows preexisting sequential programs to utilize multiple processors. Automatic parallelization requires thorough analysis of the sequential program. In this paper multiprocessor systems, and challenges of automatic parallelization are briefly covered. Also, a framework for developing and running automatic parallelization algorithms is introduced.

Computer-aided diagnostics has a growing importance in many medical applications, such as mammography. The main goal of computer-aided tumour-detection is to help radiologists by selecting only the suspected abnormal cases. Identifying abnormal tissues in a mammogram is a great challenge, where conventional image processing methods usually fail. Therefore special methods are needed, which combine the advantages of already known and newly developed image processing algorithms. In this work the possibilities of lesion detection are examined by first extracting the lesion from the background, then characterizing it on the basis of its shape. The achieved results are presented, respectively.

The microelectronics industry is moving toward smaller feature sizes. The main driving forces are to improve performance and to lower cost. From the point of view of performance, the small distances between chips together with the short interconnection routes have of great importance in order to achieve faster operation. The application of polymers for the insulating and protective layers of interconnect substrates is beneficial to the performance and to the cost of a circuit module as well. In the article, the application of advanced laser technology for pattern and via generation has become an efficient tool for the fabrication of very high density interconnects substrates.

In the area of high voltages and powers, a high quality inverter-fed ac drive is more easily obtained by the use of multi-level inverters. For three-level inverters three different PWM control regions can be introduced where different two-phase (discontinuous) PWM strategies and the different three-phase ones should be applied. This paper deals with the analysis of voltage spectra of different PWM methods for region I of three-level inverters and especially with those two PWM methods that are not used in the case of two-level inverters. The derivation of the analytical equations of motor voltage harmonics for these PWM methods is given. The comparisons of the voltage spectra of the possible PWM methods are presented. It is shown that for the first half of region I (low voltage area) the best solution is the use of dipolar modulation. However, for the second half of this region the harmonic losses associated with dipolar modulation can be sharply decreased by the application of the other three-phase PWM technique. At the same time for two-level inverters this PWM technique produces no acceptable solution.

This paper studies the possibilities of protecting backbone networks from multiple simultaneous failures. Although methods that prepare the networks to survive single failures were extensively studied in the literature, in order to provide extra high availability for mission-critical applications, the possibility of more than one simultaneous failure has to be considered too. The general technique of protecting a traffic flow is to establish a backup path where the traffic is redirected when a failure occurs along its active path. Using this technique the total capacity reservation is at least doubled compared to the non-protected case. To avoid this large amount of bandwidth reservation by the backup paths, the shared backup path protection paradigm can be used, which is a promising scheme favored by the Internet engineering task force. In this paper the two backup path based protection scheme is introduced, which provides survivability against any two simultaneous failures. Further, a novel shared protection strategy is proposed that improves the failure tolerance of the traditional single backup path based protection. The performance of the different protection types is examined through simulations.

The semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is a high performance and very versatile component in a wide range of optical communications systems. It offers a good solution for the implementation of very high-speed analogue links (> 10 GHz), microwave distribution networks, etc. We assess the performance of this device for analog optical systems and illustrate it by a subcarrier multiplexed link. We study linearity, modulation bandwidth, noise and dispersion in a very high speed optical link, using both experimental and theoretical methods.

The electrochromic changes of the polyaniline (PANI) have been studied with vis-spectroscopy. The electropolymerisation of PANI was carried out in hydrochloridic acid (HCl) by cyclic voltammetry, and the deposited film was measured during protonation from the reduced and oxidated form switching between at different voltage and different switching speed. It is shown, that the colour transmission changes depends from the switching speed, due to the ion movement to/from the film layer from/to the electrolyte solution, and acts as a possible limit of application. Colour transmission changing could be used in flat and flexible indicator devices in low power applications. It is shown, that due to the limits present in the system there are possible applications for such devices in display technology.

The role of the Department of Electronics technology at budapest university of technology and economics, as well as, the benefits of colleagues and institutions of the Newly Associate States (NAS) countries is discussed. The following three projects are in the scope: 1. NETPACK: Network of Excellence in Microelectronics Packaging (***); 2. EuroTraining: Provision of microsystems and related training in Europe (***); 3. IPCI: Performance Centred Vocational Education - the link between work and education (Leonardo Pilot Project).

Electroconductive polymer based gas sensors have been investigated focusing on the resistance changes when exposing them to ammonia atmosphere. Firstly, the resistance increase of these devices in air after manufacturing them, secondly the changes in resistance after exposing them to different concentrations of ammonia was examined. These phenomena and also the possibilities of enhancing the operating speed of the sensor by curve prediction are described and examined here. A possible data processing system is outlined for enhancing the accuracy of the measurements. The resistivity changes in time (drift) and memory effect of the polymer is taken into account. The main topic of this paper is what kind of problems we must face during signal processing of the responses given by this type of devices when designing a fast and accurate concentration measuring system, the other is how the speed can be enhanced.

Nowadays the progress of medical techniques is inconceivable without the application and development of microelectronics technology. Since the beginning of the 70's more and more electronic innovations - e.g. micro motors, micro robots, sensor and microcircuit implants fabricated by thin and thick film technology, the use of lasers in surgery etc. - have helped the work of medical doctors worldwide. With the application of this technology, in the past years, many lives have been saved or in many cases, the most drastic interventions (amputation) could be avoided. For example, the stenosis (narrowing of the arteries) formerly could only be medicated by vascular surgery. Since the appearance of stents, this intervention has been simplified significantly.
