This work presents an algorithm for fuzzy segmentation of MR brain images. Starting from the standard FCM and its bias-corrected version BCFCM algorithm, by splitting up the two major steps of the latter, and by introducing a new factor /spl gamma/, the amount of required calculations is considerably reduced. The algorithm provides good-quality segmented 2-D brain slices a very quick way, which makes it an excellent tool to support a virtual brain endoscope.

Nowadays the importance of multilink networks is rapidly growing due to the expanding demand for high-speed Internet access and real-time video transmission. Moreover, in terrestrial systems that operate at high carrier frequencies (above 10 GHz) one of the most harmful circumstantial factors is the attenuation caused by precipitation, especially by rain. Since channel conditions can vary in time and space, selection of the used communication links depends on traffic load, latency, coverage and desired data rate. Therefore combining multilink architecture and adaptive video transmission can be an effective solution for broadcasting video streams. In this paper the efficiency of adaptive transmission scheme in a terrestrial multilink network will be presented.

This paper describes the preliminary results for detecting slippery road conditions. The detector will be implemented in a larger system intended to increase the safety margin for vehicle drivers, by utilising so-called co-operative driving where infrastructure to vehicle communications operate seamlessly. The ice detection system is based on intensity differences in reflectance for horizontal and vertical polarisation planes. The results show that relative light reflection in the horizontal plane compared to the vertical plane is 59% higher in the case of ice than for dry asphalt. Furthermore, the detector includes a so-called graininess analysis, which provided a 32% reduction in granularity when moving from dry asphalt to ice. Combining these two methods enables a robust and reliable ice/wet road detection application. This paper also briefly describes how the ice detection application can be connected to the overall safespot safety system, its particular relevance and its planned implementation on the test sites.

In this paper we present a method for reconstructing static scene viewed through thick smoke using multiple images. Based on spatiotemporal statistical approach our method works well on noisy videos containing swirling smoke. We apply statistical analysis on regions of color input images, and show the way to reconstruct scene by transforming images to alter mean and deviation locally. We introduce a method to extract necessary parameters using multiple frames of a video. We verify our method with the widely used physical model of aerosols, highlighting some differences from removing haze and fog a widely studied area. Furthermore, our approach eliminates the need for complex optimization, making real-time processing possible. Results show that our method is capable of reconstructing scene in challenging cases.

There are many areas where objects with very complex and sometimes interdependent features are to be classified; similarities and dissimilarities are to be evaluated. This makes a complex decision model difficult to construct effectively. Fuzzy signatures are introduced to handle complex structured data and interdependent feature problems. Fuzzy signatures can also be used in cases where data is missing. This work presents the concept of a fuzzy signature and how its flexibility can be used to quickly construct a medical pre-clinical diagnosis system. A severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) pre-clinical diagnosis system using fuzzy signatures is constructed as an example to show many advantages of the fuzzy signature. With the use of this fuzzy signature structure, complex decision models in the medical field should be able to be constructed more effectively.

This paper presents a novel image processing procedure dedicated to the automated detection of the medial axis of the root canal from dental micro CT records. The 3D model of root canal is built up from several hundreds of parallel cross sections, using image enhancement and segmentation, center point detection in the segmented slice, three dimensional inner surface reconstruction and morphological skeleton extraction in three dimensions. The central line of the root canal is interpolated as a 3D spline curve. The proposed procedure can help prepare several kinds of endodontic interventions.

Dynamic properties of a hybrid system are analyzed that has been developed to generate electric energy by utilizing alternative, renewable and waste energies. The solution is based on a system that consists of a high-speed turbine, coupled to a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous generator, an AC/AC converter and a supervisory control unit. The function of the system is to utilize the energy content of some working medium by a special turbine that converts the energy content of the working medium into electric energy by the generator and the AC/AC converter. The alternative renewable energy sources may include solar energy (direct solar steam system or solar energy with heat exchanger), geothermal energy (with or without heat exchanger) and energy obtained from biomass. Various waste energy sources can also be utilized by applying the system such as the energy that can be obtained during the process of pressure reduction in steam, gas and fluid networks. The electric power generated by the system can be fed back to the utility mains or it can be used in stand-alone mode to supply a selected group of loads. The paper analyses a novel control strategy and principle of the system to ensure optimum performance and economy by using a special solution for ensuring the power equilibrium in the combined mechanical-electric drive.
