HITEC is a hierarchical text categorizer tool that is based on UFEX (universal feature extractor) algorithm. This paper presents experiments on the effectiveness of HITEC on several natural languages (English, German) and with various kinds of text corpora. The obtained results show that HITEC outperforms its known competitors on the investigated corpora, and its performance is independent from the processed languages. The time and storage requirement of HITEC is considerable, therefore it can be run on an average PC.

A novel specular surface reconstruction approach developed for and used in an experimental multi-camera corneal topographer arrangement is presented in the paper. The tear-film coated, and therefore specular, corneal surface is mathematically reconstructed from the corneal images taken simultaneously by the calibrated cameras of the arrangement. The surface reconstruction is achieved by the joint solution of partial differential equations (PDE's) that is derived from the mapping between the measurement-pattern and its virtual images taken by the cameras. The PDE's - each given in an advantageous form for one of the cameras - describe the phenomenon of light-reflection at the corneal surface. The portions of the corneal surface that reflect - possibly different - measurement-pattern points to more than one camera convey starting points for the mathematical reconstruction of the surface.

The main object of this paper is to introduce a model for describing how the energy distribution changes during deformational processes, esp. in car crashes. This an important and difficult task in accident analysis and in safety car-body design. Exact estimation or measuring of the absorbed energy by the deformation is almost impossible. The classical tool for this task is usually a differential equation based finite element method, which requires exact knowledge about the parameters and takes a lot of computational time with high complexity. In the following we introduce a simple numerical model for the changing of the energy distribution during the whole deformational process.

Thermal measurement and modeling of multi-die packages became a hot topic recently in different fields like RAM chip packaging or LEDs and LED assemblies. In our present study, besides the overview of usual multi die packages, we present results for a more complex structure: an opto-coupler device with 4 chips in a combined lateral and vertical arrangement. The paper gives an overview of measurement and modeling techniques and it describes actual measurement results along with our structure function based methodology which helps validating the detailed model of the package being studied. Also, we show how one can derive junction-to-pin thermal resistances with a technique using structure functions

In our previous works model identification methods were discussed. The bacterial evolutionary algorithm for extracting a fuzzy rule base from a training set was presented. The Levenberg-Marquardt method was also proposed for determining membership functions in fuzzy systems. The combination of evolutionary and gradient-based learning techniques -the bacterial memetic algorithm -was also introduced. In this paper an improvement of the bacterial memetic algorithm is shown for fuzzy rule extraction. The new method can optimize not only the rules, but can also find the optimal size of the rule base.

This paper describes how the safe mobile code technology can be integrated into the intelligent space environment. In the intelligent space, several distributed intelligent network devices communicate and share their information about a human environment. In this environment mobile robots can be controlled with mobile code technology. The mobile code is a program-component obtained from a remote system, transferred across a network and dynamically downloaded and executed on the robots. This code is created, verified, stored and transmitted to the robot using the certified proved-property-carrying code architecture, where properties and their proofs also attached to the code. The receiver can verify the proofs and it can decide whether to use or to refuse the received mobile component. Information about the robot's environment is also sent to the robot from the intelligent space. Robots contain explicit and formally expressed security requirements. Explicit and formal properties of the mobile code are attached to the mobile code. Then a formal verification system can verify the mobile code properties correspondence against the robots requirements. The robot refuses to execute those mobile code tasks violating it's requirements.

This paper presents two examples of usage of fuzzy signatures in the field of mobile robotics. The first shows a complex lateral drift control method base on fuzzy signatures. This method inspects the motion system of the robot as a whole, unlike as simple parts of a complex system. The state space is written down by fuzzy signatures which add up flexibility, adaptability and learning ability to the system. In the second experiment a new communication approach is investigated for intelligent cooperation of autonomous mobile robots. Effective, fast and compact communication is one of the most important cornerstones of a high-end cooperating system. In this paper we propose a fuzzy communication system where the codebooks are built up by fuzzy signatures. We use cooperating autonomous mobile robots to solve some logistic problems.

The paper gives a short overview on the new feature of the recent MPEG-4 standard, namely interactive facilitation of multimedia contents. Some experiments on dealing with BIFS and MPEG-J - the two main motors enabling the interactivity in MPEG-4 - are presented. These experiments serve for two targets. First, they demonstrate a very perspective capability of MPEG-4 based multimedia contents, which are not only flexible in composition but also make interaction with viewer possible. Next, they expose a gap occurring in merging the computing and broadcasting technology in MPEG-4, namely temporal constraint versus random access. The work also outlines some solution to overcome this problem. The goal is to improve the performance of the interactivity enabling feature so that MPEG-4 standard actually integrates the computing capability into compression technique, enabling the generation of sophisticated multimedia scene.

In this paper a method is proposed for constructing hierarchical-interpolative fuzzy rule bases in order to model black box systems defined by input-output pairs, i.e. to solve supervised machine learning problems. The resulting hierarchical rule base is the knowledge base, which is constructed by using evolutionary techniques, namely, Genetic and Bacterial Programming Algorithms. Applying hierarchical-interpolative fuzzy rule bases is an advanced way of reducing the complexity of the knowledge base, whereas evolutionary methods ensure a relatively efficient learning process. This is the reason of the investigation of this combination.

In this paper a further step towards a novel approach to adaptive nonlinear control developed at budapest Tech in the past few years is reported. Its main advantage in comparison with the complicated Lyapunov function based techniques is that its fundament is some simple geometric consideration allowing to formulate the control task as a Fixed Point Problem for the solution of which various Contractive Mappings can be created that generate Iterative Cauchy Sequences for Single Input - Single Output (SISO) systems. These sequences can converge to the fixed points that are the solutions of the control tasks. Recently alternative potential solutions were proposed and sketched by the use of special functions built up of the "response function" of the excited system under control. These functions have almost constant values apart from a finite region in which they have a "wrinkle" in the vicinity of the desired solution that is the "proper" fixed point of these functions. It was shown that at one of their sides these fixed points were repulsive, while at the opposite side they were attractive. It was shown, too, that at the repulsive side another, so called "false" fixed points were present that were globally attractive, with the exception of the basins of attraction of the "proper" ones. This structure seemed to be advantageous because no divergences could occur in the iterations, the convergence to the "false" values could easily be detected, and by using some ancillary tricks in the most of the cases the solutions could be kicked from the wrong fixed points into the basins of attraction of the "proper ones". It was expected that via adding simple rules to the application of these transformations good adaptive control can be developed.
