Advanced autonomous vehicle strings rely on inter-vehicle communication in order to decrease the necessary safety gap so that fuel consumption can be decreased and road capacity can be increased. In case of failures of some communication channels, the corresponding back-up control strategy must be switched on. Maximal spacing errors of such back-up modes are analyzed and compared. Robustness to platoon heterogeneity and communication delays are considered. The main conclusion we can draw is that, in the full communication mode, satisfactory spacing performance can be achieved by using simple output-feedback controllers designed without detailed knowledge on engine/brake characteristics, only utilizing the existing services available today in every commercial heavy trucks with automatic gearbox. Experimental verification of the designed controllers are presented.

This paper presents the networking framework as conceived within the European project BIONETS. The case for such a framework comes from the idea of a ldquoDisappearing Networkrdquo paradigm. In the disappearing network, the network ceases to exist as an independent entity and becomes an appendix of the distributed services running on user devices. The overall BIONETS system exploits the presence of embedded devices to provide context-awareness and leverages peer-to-peer interactions among mobile devices in order to ensure system-wide dissemination of data and services. Some of the current networking solutions developed within the project are also presented, highlighting the use of bio-inspired techniques and tools. The paper presents then a first version of the SerWorks architecture, which takes a unifying view on networks and services. In SerWorks, the network becomes a set of particular services, aimed at general connectivity purposes, which can be created and modified at runtime in order to accommodate for specific system conditions and higher-level constraints.

In medicine the decision on which test to choose for a given decision problem is a delicate problem. On the one hand a positive test should be a reliable indicator on the presence of a disease, while on the other hand a negative test is required to be an indicator on the absence of a disease. Of course, these two goals are conflicting and a balanced decision according to the current situation is required. Inductive learning methods for (fuzzy) rule bases are, however, typically not capable of optimizing such complex and problem depending goal functions. We therefore present a meta-learning algorithm which selects a subset from a previously generated set of fuzzy rules using bacterial evolutionary algorithms. We also present a study where the proposed method is used to generate a model for predicting the presence/absence of hepatitis, based on laboratory results.

In case of opto-electronic devices the power applied on the device leaves in a parallel heat and light transport. For this reason the interpretation of R/sub th/ is not obvious. By studying electrical and thermal transients in high power LEDs this paper proposes a multi-domain "compact" model suitable for correct simulation of single devices as well as LED arrays in a board-level simulation environment. The thermal part of the model has been identified from structure functions extracted from measured thermal transients. Several measurements were carried out in a combined photometric/thermal measurement setup, which is proposed for the characterization of power LEDs. Transient simulation results compared to measured transients are also presented.

This paper summaries the application of the recently proposed Cartesian representation of membership functions to the problem of fuzzy interpolation. It is shown that under this formulation the problem can be according to whether the observation lies within or outside the antecedent spanning set. For the former, the observation contains the same geometric properties as the given antecedents, and interpolation can be conducted based on the given rules using the extensibility function concept. On the other hand, observation lying outside the antecedent spanning set contains new geometric properties beyond those of the given rules, and heuristic reasoning must therefore be applied. A two step approach with flexibility to accommodate additional criteria and design objectives is presented for this case.

The paper is concerned with the stability analysis of a feedback controlled resonant dual channel buck&boost converter. The output voltage is controlled by using constant frequency PWM and PI controller. The analysis is based on the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of the Poincaré Map Function (PMF). After small perturbation determining the deviations of the state variables from the periodic trajectory, the Jacobian matrix is calculated without the need to determine the PMF itself. The introduction of the so-called auxiliary state vector greatly facilitates the calculation. Calculation and simulation results included helps the design of the control loop.

This paper aims at solving the conflicts of the computational needs of building tensor product (TP) based control models having high approximation accuracy and practical aspects of their applicability w.r.t. system stability and feasibility. Therefore first we propose a HOSVD (higher order singular value decomposition) based methodology capable of implementing any differential equation systems of a dynamic model in TP model form with specific basis functions whereupon the linear matrix inequalities (LMI) based controller design techniques and stability analysis can be executed. Second, we intend to find a tradeoff between the TP modelling accuracy, hence system performance, and the controller complexity which is bounded by the available real time computation power at hand. As an example a detailed control design is given.

High dynamic range of illumination may cause serious distortions and other problems in viewing and further processing of digital images. In this paper a new tone reproduction preprocessing algorithm is introduced which may help in developing hardly or non-viewable features and content of the images. The method is based on the synthetization of multiple exposure images from which the dense part, i.e. regions having the maximum level of detail are included in the output image. The resulted high quality HDR image makes easier the information extraction and effectively supports the further processing of the image.

In the energy management of the isolated operation of small power system, the economic scheduling of the generation units is a crucial problem. Applying right timing can maximize the performance of the supply. The optimal operation of a wind turbine, a solar unit, a fuel cell and a storage battery is searched by a mixed-integer linear programming implemented in GAMS (general algebraic modeling systems). A VPP (virtual power producer) can optimal operate the generation units, assured the good functioning of equipment, including the maintenance, operation cost and the generation measurement and control. A central control at system allows a VPP to manage the optimal generation and their load control. The application of methodology to a real case study in budapest Techpsilas, demonstrate the effectiveness of a this method to solve the optimal isolated dispatch of the DC microgrid renewable energy park. The problem has been converged in 0.09 seconds and 30 iterations.

A method is presented to compute a fundamental traffic engineering parameter, the end-to-end blocking probability, when both traffic and reliability aspects are taken into account. Additionally, link failures are not assumed independent. This situation is justified by the practical scenario of logical network, even if the physical link failures are independent, after mapping the failures into the logical network, the logical links do not fail independently. Dependent link failures can also occur as a result of a node failure.
