Theoretical and experimental study of using direct modulated vertical cavity surface emitting lasers in radio over fiber applications is presented. The nonlinear distortion and signal to noise ratio are investigated and evaluated in the case of short-range multi-carrier transmission. Nonlinear characterization and comparison of different kinds of semiconductor lasers are also presented.

Electroconductive polymer based gas sensors have been investigated focusing on the resistance changes when exposing them to an ammonia atmosphere. At first, the resistance increase of these devices in air after manufacturing then, the changes in resistance after exposing them to ammonia of different concentration were examined. These phenomena and also the curing method of the polymer film prepared by electrochemical polymerisation are described and examined here. The main topic of this paper is what kind of problems we must face during signal processing of the responses given by this type of device when designing an accurate concentration measuring system.

Nowadays state of the art WLAN support one-hop ad-hoc functionality. However, real home automation or disaster rescue systems require much more sophisticated ad-hoc capabilities. Therefore the investigation of open questions of multi-hop ad-hoc networks becomes more and more important. The problems to solve can be categorized into two major topics: medium access control (MAC) and routing. In this paper we introduce a novel concept called distributed cell reservation scheme (DCRS) which works over the MAC protocols designed for operation in a one-hop environment and allows efficient MAC in multi-hop scenarios. We define the basic criteria for MAC protocols required by DCRS. Based on a large number of simulations we evaluate and compare the new solution using the well-known CSMA/CA and EY-NPMA as basic MAC protocols for DCRS.

The three optimized and two carrier-based PWM strategies of the overmodulation region of inverter-fed AC drives are suggested and investigated from the point of view of motor harmonic losses, torque ripples and voltage gain of the control system. The 1/sup st/ optimized solution produces the lowest value of motor harmonic losses if the skin effect in the rotor bar is not significant while the 2/sup nd/ one gives the lowest value of these losses for the strong skin effect. It is shown that the harmonic losses of the optimized and the commonly used carrier based three-phase and two-phase overmodulation strategies ensure acceptable values of harmonic losses even if the skin effect is taken into account but only up to 96% of the maximal possible voltage region. In this case for the presently used switching frequencies the motor harmonic losses rarely exceed the maximal losses of the normal voltage region. The near constant voltage gain can be ensured for the overmodulation region too. The torque ripples of different overmodulation strategies have about the same values.

MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) including also MOEMS (micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems) represent a progressive area of electrical/mechanical engineering. To supply this field with well-educated engineers, it is necessary to teach them basic sciences, technology, applications, and design aspects (reliability, packaging, etc.) belonging to the topic of M(O)EMS. Conventional teaching methods, based on lectures, static written materials, laboratories, etc., has become rather difficult at all levels of education. The main objective of the described project is the development of a multimedia supported education material that teaches the theoretical background, application of microelectronics, and packaging technologies in designing micro-electromechanical systems for the next generation of intelligent systems. The new approach tries to exploit all advantages of multimedia computer aided teaching not only for keeping the competitiveness but also in order to overcome the specific difficulties of the particular area. The modern educational software tool can secure up to date information, easy-to-understand visualisation of the 3D MEMS structures and interactive examples of the subject. The course material will be available on the Internet and on CDs for the technical community, for other university professors for teaching, and also will continuously be developed. The paper highlights the structure of the course material and demonstrates animated examples.

In the course of the last few years, new component package types and high density interconnect (HDI) substrate technologies have emerged and presented new challenges to manufacturers. New package types include a great variety from flip chips (FCs), through quad flat packs (QFPs), to micro ball grid arrays (micro-BGAs) and chip scale packages (CSPs), while for substrates, laminated or build-up HDI technologies are preferred. In particular, laser via generation and patterning technology provided new possibilities in the field of the fabrication of laminate substrates for multichip modules (MCM-Ls). Since the application of a new technology always brings new degradation and failure mechanisms, reliability testing and failure analysis are necessary to maintain the quality of products and parts.

When a signal goes through a system having a static, nonlinear transfer function, the output signal will be distorted. In addition, the detected output signal is usually contaminated by noise, due to the noisy environment. If we compensate the nonlinearity with its inverse, the expected value of the output signal will be different from it's original one, due to the nonlinearly distorted noise. If this difference is not acceptable, we have to use a different compensation function. We show an iterative method, which can produce a unbiased compensation function in the knowledge of the original nonlinear distortion and the noise distribution. The resultant output signal has the same expected value as the original one.

Local multipoint distribution service (LMDS) is an emerging technology among broadband point-to-multipoint (PMP) wireless networks. The most critical point in designing LMDS networks is interference. Dominant access methods are FDMA and TDMA in LMDS, whereas CDMA has received less attention. Our aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of applying CDMA in LMDS networks by exploiting the results of research activities in CDMA interference suppression (e.g. multiuser detection). The uplink is the bottleneck of cellular PMP networks in terms of interference. Therefore, we analyze uplink interference in CDMA-based LMDS networks. Frequency-sectorized TDMA uplink interference scenarios are compared to those of CDMA using single user detector (matched filter) and multiuser detection algorithms, i.e. parallel interference cancellation (PIC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC). Uplink investigations of an LMDS sector are presented by carrier-to-interference ratio (C/I) maps and BER versus SNR simulations.

Widely used molecular-chips of today are expression type DNA-microarrays. These chips are not commonly used in clinical practice due to the high cost, the need for extensive laboratory devices and due to not well clarified results. Therefore the need for simple mass-production methods is constantly growing. In our work we have developed a new DNA immobilisation method for DNA binding on polypyrrole modified gold electrode. After immobilisation of biotin labeled DNA on electrode the detection was performed through streptavidin-texas red dye binding. The unlabeled DNA probes were detected using bis benzimide dye. For the visualisation of the DNA in detection we used confocal fluorescence microscope. We investigated the influence of the polymerisation time to thickness and quality of the polymer film and the influence of the quantity of DNA for detection and immobilisation. In our conception we targeted to build a clinically applicable chip, to be used for the identification of PCR amplified DNAs for known mutations of inherited diseases in the future.
