This paper is concerned with the analysis of nonlinear effects in fiber-radio systems and wireless local area networks. Using the OFDM technique, the crucial parameters of the transmission are the nonlinearities and the phase-noise of microwave and optical oscillators. A summary of the distorting effects and possible solutions are also presented.

This paper describes a new methodology for the simulation of thermal sigma-delta modulators. Its essential feature is the derivation of a compact electrical model of the modulator's thermal loop filter from the filter's measured step response. This model can then be used to simulate the entire modulator in the electrical domain. To verify this methodology, the behaviour of an existing modulator, used to read-out a thermal flow sensor, was studied. The sensor is incorporated in the feedback loop of the modulator, where it functions as a thermal low-pass filter. A compact model of this filter was derived from the sensor's measured step response. Using this model, the modulator was then simulated in SPICE. The simulation results correspond well with the modulator's actual behaviour.

In the year 2000 the telecommunication market entered a very deep recession. In the current marketplace the service providers must improve network management to reduce operation costs. ATM network service providers offered mainly permanent virtual circuit connections to customers in the last few years, but recently there is an increasing interest in offering switched virtual circuit (SVC) connections to end users. The SVC is based on the use of signalling protocols. Our paper focuses on the performance of call processing in ATM networks. Based on a series of measurement results that have a wide generality among ATM switches, we have built up a node-model to design large ATM signalling networks. The paper shows that a cascaded network is a good estimator for the signalling performance of an arbitrary network. In addition, it is shown that the call density of the network is an important network parameter, which is closely related to the maximum network-level call arrival rate. The case studies are extended from homogeneous networks to hybrid networks.

We propose a new multifractal traffic model for network traffic. The model is a combination of a multiplicative cascade with an independent lognormal process. We show that the model has all the important properties observed in data traffic including long-range dependence (LRD), multifractality and lognormality. We also demonstrate that the model is flexible enough to capture the complete multifractal characteristics of data traffic including both the scaling function and the moment factor. On the other hand, we argue that the model is simple from practical point of view having only three parameters. Practical applications for measured data traffic and validation of the model with queueing performance evaluation are also presented.

The development of all superconducting (AS) plants (ASP), as for example AS mini power plants (MPP), or AS substations is a new trend in power applications of superconductivity. Superconductivity can contribute significantly to increase the advantages of MPPs. Exceeding the stage of the development of individual superconducting power devices (SPD), more and more concern is being focused around ASPs consisting of a set of individual SPDs being integrated into one system possessing substantial additional benefits compared to and exceeding those of the individual SPDs. A high temperature superconducting (HTS) MPP model with a projected power rating of 10 kW has been designed by the author for development, construction and testing in the near future. Proper approaches and tools are needed to promote the industrial application and market introduction of HTS power devices, including that of the HTS MPP. Computer aided engineering problem solving (CAEPS) methods effectively help estimate qualitatively and quantitatively the technical and economical feasibilities of HTS devices. CAEPS methods and tools have been applied to develop the HTS MPP model.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new infrastructure for multimedia database searches based on CORBA and mobile agent technology. A new mobile agent system, called Vagabond, was implemented in pure Java using only standard CORBA facilities. The fundamental agent design and architecture is introduced. Measurements demonstrated the merits of Vagabond, namely the simple design, the implicit heterogeneity inherited from CORBA, and its speed. The system (renamed as M/sup 3/) was implanted inside an Oracle8i database system which is able to run Java code as a stored procedure. Further measurements have justified the idea presented above, ie. sending agents directly inside the database can decrease the response time of multimedia content search and retrieval. However, the required modifications made the embedded agency accessible for clients using only Aurora, Oracle's modified Visi-broker ORB. On the basis of the Proxy design pattern, the paper presents a proxy solution that encapsulates the specific protocol issues that restricted interoperability, and thus provides the user of the infrastructure with the benefits of a truly heterogeneous environment.

A new branch of computational cybernetics seems to emerge on the principles akin to that of the traditional soft computing (SC). In the present paper the essential differences between the conventional and the novel approach are summarized. At the cost of the use of a simple dynamic model, a priori known, uniform, lucid, structure of reduced size, machine learning by a simple and short explicit algebraic procedure especially fit to real time applications considerable computational advantages can be achieved. The key element of the approach is the modified renormalization transformation supported by the application of a simple linear transformation, and the use of a simple prediction technique. It analyzes how the satisfactory conditions of the "complete stability" can be guaranteed, and the convergence properties can be improved by the ancillary methods. Simulation examples are presented for the control of a 3 DOF SCARA arm by the use of partially stretched orthogonal transformations.

Service robots serve and assist human beings sharing a common environment. Therefore, fast responding and robust planners generating collision-free motions are required to guarantee a safe and convenient man-machine interaction. In most cases the working environment is partially known or perceived by a sensor system. To reduce planning time, this work presents a motion planner interacting with reactive plan execution systems. By dividing the work space into subspaces appropriate motion plans are determined. Based on an environment model, collisions are avoided by interacting with an obstacle avoidance system. Tactile sensors are used to detect collisions of the robot arm, e.g. due to an incomplete knowledge of the environment or enforced by a human touching the robot. Experimental results of our 8 degree of freedom manipulator arm mounted on a mobile platform are presented. In these experiments the robot acts as a barkeeper.
