In previous papers from the authors fuzzy model identification methods were discussed. The bacterial algorithm for extracting fuzzy rule base from a training set was presented. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was also proposed for determining membership functions in fuzzy systems. In this paper the Levenberg-Marquardt technique is improved to optimise the membership functions in the fuzzy rules without Ruspini-partition. The class of membership functions investigated is the trapezoidal one as it is general enough and widely used. The method can be easily extended to arbitrary piecewise linear functions as well.

StoLPaN, a pan-European consortium of companies, universities and user groups co-funded by the European Commission (EU), Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme aims to define open commercial and technical frameworks for the remote management of NFC-enabled services on mobile devices. These frameworks will facilitate the deployment of NFC-enabled mobile applications across a wide range of vertical markets, regardless of the phone type and the nature of the services required. This paper introduces the business aspects of the NFC based service development and the technical infrastructure implementing the core of the NFC-enabled services.

In this paper, the characterization of electromagnetic inverse problems is addressed. As it is well known, an inverse problem can be ill-posed, i.e., its solution is not necessarily unique and might be quite sensitive to the measured data. To characterize such an inverse problem a combination of a surrogate model -based on an optimal database- and an inverse mapping of some sort, both using kriging prediction as tools, is proposed. The database (a kind of discrete representation of the electromagnetic model) is generated using an adaptive sampling strategy aiming to find a set of optimal input parameter-output data pairs. Once the latter has been computed, both qualitative and quantitative conclusions about the related inverse problem can be drawn. The illustrative examples are drawn from eddy-current nondestructive testing.

The main objective of the paper is to present new browser-based, interactive software tools for modeling of various power electronics circuits. The static and dynamic operation, including the continuous and discrete time linearization of widely applied DC-DC converter cells are discussed in the first part of the paper. The second part focuses on the basics of the pulse-width-modulation and its application in one-phase sinusoidal inverters. The interactive tools provide numerous excellent opportunities for industrial and academic education. Another application field of numerous embedded interactive software components is their utilization as fast, real-time model-building tools

The dynamically changing nature of distributed service environments requires a computing model in which services modify their behavior in order to adapt to changes and fulfill new requirements in the environment. This paper describes design and implementation of the autonomic communication element (ACE) component model with main focus on service adaptability. Autonomic Communication Element (ACE) is a component model developed to support the creation of autonomic communication services which are capable of adapting their behavior according to changes in the context in which they are executing and from which they are requested. In this paper we present our approach for service adaptability and illustrate this on the example of an ACE.

The handling of traffic conflicts of trains is rather complicated if full dynamic models are used. Often it is senseless to take into consideration all details of the motion equations and environmental parameters especially as the main parameters, like maximum speed of the trains involved are not exactly known. Also, a large number of noise type variables are always available. The paper proposes the use of the Mamdani type fuzzy rule based reasoning algorithm for handling railway traffic conflicts. The essential point is the granulation of all important parameters into a relatively small number of categories labeled by terms such as small, large, etc. This way the possible decisions for a concrete traffic conflict situation get various fuzzy weights after accumulation of all the fired rules. The final (non-fuzzy) decision is taken by choosing the option with the largest weight. A simplified example is presented for a delay and overtaking type conflict.

The quality of a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for control nonlinear systems highly depends on the used operators. Using the uninorm operators in these processes the FLC components can be adapted to achieve better results. The program language environment, applied by simulation, supports the choosing of suitable fuzzy operators and their parameters. The simulation results are analyzed, depending on the efficiency of the operator choice in approximate reasoning model.

Although all three conventional c-means clustering algorithms, namely hard c-means (HCM), fuzzy c-means (FCM), and possibilistic c-means (PCM), had their merits in the development of clustering theory, none of them are generally good solutions for unsupervised classification. Several hybrid solutions have been proposed to produce mixture algorithms. Possibilistic-fuzzy hybrids generally attempt to get rid of the FCM's sensitivity to outliers and PCM's coincident cluster prototypes, while hard-fuzzy mixtures usually aim at quicker convergence while preserving FCM's accurate partitions. This paper presents a unifying approach to c-means clustering: the novel clustering model is considered as a linear combination of the FCM, PCM, and HCM objective functions. The optimal solution is obtained via evolutionary computation. Our main goal is to reveal the properties of such mixtures and to formulate some rules that yield accurate partitions.

A study on the characterization of small cracks by using eddy current testing (ECT) signal is presented. The significant parameters of the ECT data are selected using principal component analysis according to two approaches. The ECT signal inversion is then achieved using a parametric model trained with synthetic data obtained with a fast numerical simulation tool. The characterization procedure is then tested using experimental data. Results show that information can be obtained concerning the area of the cracks.

In this paper, we explore the use of a sparse fuzzy system generation technique in conjunction with simple projection-based fuzzy rule interpolation, to generate sparse fuzzy systems with relatively few rules whilst still achieving reasonable system accuracy. Through setting a parameter value, the user is able to control, to some extent, the number of rules generated by the rule extraction technique. The rule interpolation approach enables the sparse fuzzy system to maintain a reasonable accuracy. The effectiveness of this approach is validated experimentally.
