Although all three conventional c-means clustering algorithms, namely hard c-means (HCM), fuzzy c-means (FCM), and possibilistic c-means (PCM), had their merits in the development of clustering theory, none of them are generally good solutions for unsupervised classification. Several hybrid solutions have been proposed to produce mixture algorithms. Possibilistic-fuzzy hybrids generally attempt to get rid of the FCM's sensitivity to outliers and PCM's coincident cluster prototypes, while hard-fuzzy mixtures usually aim at quicker convergence while preserving FCM's accurate partitions. This paper presents a unifying approach to c-means clustering: the novel clustering model is considered as a linear combination of the FCM, PCM, and HCM objective functions. The optimal solution is obtained via evolutionary computation. Our main goal is to reveal the properties of such mixtures and to formulate some rules that yield accurate partitions.

Current and past research has brought up new views related to the optimization of neural networks. For a fixed structure, second order methods are seen as the most promising. From previous works we have shown how second order methods are of easy applicability to a neural network. Namely, we have proved how the Levenberg-Marquard possesses not only better convergence but how it can assure the convergence to a local minima. However, as any gradient-based method, the results obtained depend on the startup point. In this work, a reformulated evolutionary algorithm - the bacterial programming for Levenberg-Marquardt is proposed, as an heuristic which can be used to determine the most suitable starting points, therefore achieving, in most cases, the global optimum.

The paper considers a railway timetable related problem in a simplified form, generated by the delay of one or several incoming trains at a given station. These incoming train delays are either automatically generated or manually entered. Usually there are connecting trains in the timetable, especially in up to date periodic timetables and thus incoming delays might indicate the necessity of introducing a delay with connecting outgoing trains. A hierarchical fuzzy rule base is applied in order to determine the optimal outgoing delay, taking also usual restrictions into consideration. The delays of the incoming trains are modeled by independent exponential distributions and a software simulation is built around the existing rule base. The behavior of the hierarchical fuzzy rule base and the pertinence of the outgoing delay is a subject of further investigation. The delays are also updated periodically that makes the recalculation of outgoing delays necessary from time to time.

In this paper, we explore the use of a sparse fuzzy system generation technique in conjunction with simple projection-based fuzzy rule interpolation, to generate sparse fuzzy systems with relatively few rules whilst still achieving reasonable system accuracy. Through setting a parameter value, the user is able to control, to some extent, the number of rules generated by the rule extraction technique. The rule interpolation approach enables the sparse fuzzy system to maintain a reasonable accuracy. The effectiveness of this approach is validated experimentally.

In this paper, we address the correct refinement of abstract architectural models into more platform-specific representations. We consider the challenging case of dynamic architectures which can perform run-time reconfigurations. For this purpose, the underlying platform has to provide the necessary reconfiguration mechanisms. To conceptually model such platforms including provided reconfiguration mechanisms, we use architectural styles formalized by graph transformation rules. Based on formal refinement relations between abstract and platform-specific styles, we can then investigate how to realize business-specific scenarios on a certain platform by automatically deriving refined, platform-specific reconfiguration scenarios.

The main contribution of this paper to develop a mathematical model which describes the movement of a piston of pneumatic cylinder controlled by a proportional valve, keeping the non linear behavior of pneumatic system. There are several ways to define the junction-to-case thermal resistance; however, it is rather challenging to characterize the heat-flow in a package by a single number in an accurate and reproducible way. For many power package families such as TO-type packages the thermal transient testing and the so-called dual interface method can give reliable results. The diverging point of structure functions from dual thermal transients gives a good picture of the material interfaces in such structures. However, the location and nature of the diverging point strongly depends on the shape and direction of the heat-spreading. If the package area is much larger than the dissipating chip the shape of the heat-flow changes when using different interfaces. This causes structure functions corresponding to the two setups deviate much before reaching the case surface. In this paper the origin of this phenomenon is investigated. Measurement and simulation results are compared on different large IGBT modules with several modifications in their structure enabling a detailed analysis of the heat-flow path. A comparison is given between heating only a small fraction of a large module and heating all chips. Some samples went through thermal cycling reliability tests which resulted in cracks below the chips. The effect of the reduced die-attach area is visualized with the help of structure functions.

A large variety of access network technologies and architectures that provide wide service portfolio to the customer are available for the network operators. Each of the potential access network architectures and technologies varies in complexity, network functionality, services supported and overall network costs. A detailed comparison of the economic viability of different access network scenarios is crucial for operators due to the high cost of this network segment. This paper identifies all essential elements of a general framework for the techno-economic analysis of different access network technologies and architectures, as well as describes some specific issues/problems related to the techno-economic evaluation of next generation (NG) access networks. The goal is to have at operator's disposal a methodology allowing the techno-economic comparison of the proposed access network solutions and their introduction/rollout.

This paper presents the tools that have been developed in the IST-Anemone project, a large European testbed deployed for testing and validating IPv6 mobility protocols and products. The testbed is available to third parties, which may include research projects and companies seeking to validate IPv6-ready products. This tested is particularly suitable for ITS experimentation as it includes several private roads and various network access technologies, IPv6 mobility support and a set of tools for testing IPv6 and performing demonstrations. Several ITS-related experiments have been performed by Anemone partners.
