This paper describes an analysis of the performance overheads caused by the processing and space requirements of IPsec when protecting Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) signaling. Signaling between the Mobile Nodes and the Home Agent (HA) in a large-scale reference scenario is considered. The analysis is based on queuing theory and focuses on the overall utilization of the HA by the MIPv6 signaling processes as well as the total mean response time for a mobility process in the network. The results can assist network designers in finding the most appropriate security configuration for their specific network and mobility scenario.

Traditional centralized management approaches are not suitable for Ambient Networks (ANs), since centralized management systems neither scales well nor adapts fast enough to changing topologies and network compositions. To meet the requirements for AN management systems, we propose the use of distributed approaches. Specifically, we demonstrate the validity of these approaches through three instantiations: (i) a solution for real-time AN monitoring, (ii) a solution for load balancing in wireless networks and (iii) a solution for resource discovery in AN.

The determination of the frequencies of a multisine signal can be very important at different signal processing tasks, like vibration measurements and active noise control related to rotating machinery and calibration equipment. Adaptive Fourier Analyzers have been developed for measuring periodic signals with unknown or changing fundamental frequency. Higher frequency applications have limitations since the computational complexity of these analyzers are relatively high as the number of harmonic components to be measured (or suppressed) is usually above 50. Recently, a fast-filter bank structure has been proposed for Adaptive Fourier Analysis based on the combination of the concept of transform domain signal processing and the adaptation of a simple linear combiner. It results in the reduction of the above computational complexity, however for the correct use we have to have pre-estimation about the range of the fundamental frequency to be able to set the applied single-input multiple-output filter-banks, which in many cases causes significant and possibly non-tolerable delay in the operation. In this paper, a new fast fuzzy logic supported anytime frequency range estimation procedure is proposed which makes possible to execute the frequency estimation after one quarter of the period of the unknown signal, i.e. the adaptation and Fourier Analysis can be performed without any delay.

In this paper the innovative ALLADIN platform for whole-body isometric force measurements to be used in neuro-rehabilitation for assessing post-stroke functional recovery is presented. A mechatronic approach was used in the design and development of this platform, which consists of an ergonomic mechanical structure embedding eight force/torque sensors that sample data about the performance of simulated activities of daily living in stroke patients. The overall ALLADIN system also includes a dedicated database, where all measures and other clinical scores are stored, and a PDA-based natural language system interface for the therapist. This paper only focuses on the mechatronic platform of the ALLADIN system. The proposed platform, which is currently being validated in three different clinical centers in Europe, aims at offering a brand new method for decision support in neuro-rehabilitation. It calculates and predicts the functional recovery of stroke patients and makes clinical assessments and quantitative measurements easily exchangeable among clinical stroke rehabilitation units

The end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) is getting more and more importance nowadays. QoS is composed of many parameters, like bit error rate (BER) delay, jitter etc. This paper will make the mathematical analysis of the spectral efficiency of adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) which - unlike conventional adaptive modulation and coding - takes into consideration the bit error requirements of different service classes, beside the instantaneous channel conditions. The paper will provide results on average spectral efficiency, mode selection probabilities and average bit error rate performance of proposed and conventional adaptive modulation (AM) in multiplicative, slow Rayleigh fading channel. The fading is assumed to be slow enough, that the adaptive modulation can adapt to the variable channel state.

This paper presents an EPGA implementation of a high performance rank filter for video and image processing. The architecture exploits the features of current FPGAs and offers tradeoff between complexity and clock speed. By maximizing the operating frequency the complexity of the filter structure can be considerably reduced compared to previous 2D architectures.

There is an unmet medical need for a more reliable and earlier assessment of patients suspected of having a deep vein thrombosis. We describe a novel approach which is developing a highly reliable, accurate, portable and handheld prototype medical diagnostic device to improve radically the speed, accuracy and reliability with which DVT and related blood clotting conditions can be assessed. The device will measure whole blood concentration of D-dimer, a recognized biomarker of increased blood clotting activity, and through innovation in the development of a novel detection, measurement and reporting system, will offer the opportunity to use the test in the point of care setting. The device combines innovation in antibody bio-engineering for high specificity immunoassay-based diagnostics and nano/micro engineered impedimetric analysis electrodes incorporating a biocompatible polymer substrate with development of a disposable microfluidic manifold specifically enabling diagnostics at the point-of-first-contact.

The operator usually uses his hands to perform manipulation tasks. She has to feel the reaction forces in high-precision manipulation. The mechanism applied in the human interface device for force and tactile feedback is the most challenging (and usually the most expensive) part of a telepresence device. Bilateral control is a common solution in these systems. However, the coupled force and position control loops have contradicting requirements. Usually, the human operator has to learn a lot until she can "feel the task" in her hand, even in direct manipulation. However, using the plasticity of the human brain sensory substitution can be used to achieve a cheaper and partially decoupled system. The main contribution of this paper is a model of human contrast vision, which is applied to feedback of the grasping force in a telemanipulation system in order to decouple the bilateral control and to achieve a less complex haptic device. A contrast model of a the human vision is introduced and it is applied for grasping force feedback via peripheral vision. The preliminary results are presented.

This paper describes an analysis of the performance overheads caused by the processing and space requirements of the IKEv2 protocol using Diameter and EAP-TLS authentication when protecting Mobile IPv6 signaling. IKEv2 negotiation between mobile nodes, the home agent, and the AAA server in a large-scale reference scenario is considered. The analysis is based on queuing theory and focuses on the overall utilization of the home agent and the AAA server by the IKEv2 reauthentication processes as well as the total mean response time for such a process in the network.
