The scope of the paper is to reveal the strange behavior of Direct Torque Controlled (DTC) drives resulting from the nonlinearity of hysteresis comparators. A piecewise-defined, non-stroboscopic, discrete-time Poincare¿ map can be constructed for the system which takes into account the fast switching operations of the Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The evolution of the stator flux linkage and the electric torque within the hysteresis loops are determined from switch to switch. The movement of the two controlled state variables exhibits periodic, subharmonic, chaotic and intermittent chaotic states along a special series of border collision bifurcations induced by discontinuity of the Poincare¿ mapping function. In order to give a better insight into these bifurcations, a one-dimensional piecewise linear discontinuous iterated map is developed and analyzed.

The losses of a voltage source inverter depend on the converter topology and the characteristics of semiconductor power switches, the control system, the inverter current control (modulation) algorithm and DC link voltage level. Significant component of overall losses are the switching losses of voltage source inverters (which are proportional to the switching frequency). Based on simulation results, the switching losses of different inverter control methods were compared in steady state at various and DC link voltages. The hysteresis and the predictive current control, furthermore the carrier based space vector and two-phase PWMs were examined and simulated. It is shown that at lower speed the carrier based PWM control produces less switching losses than other investigated methods, but for higher speed of induction motor the predictive and hysteresis control has the smallest switching losses. On the basis of these results, the optimal solution can be reached by combining the inverter control methods using hybrid current control algorithm and an algorithm selector which can switch between the inverter control algorithms. This paper shows the realization of the algorithm switch method and the simulation results.

Achieving fast and precise failure localization has long been a highly desired feature in all-optical mesh networks. M-trail (monitoring trail) has been proposed as the most general monitoring structure for achieving unambiguous failure localization (UFL) of any single link failure while effectively reducing the amount of alarm signals flooded in the networks. However, it is critical to come up with a fast and intelligent m-trail design approach for minimizing the number of m-trails and the totally consumed bandwidth, which ubiquitously determines the length of alarm code and bandwidth overhead for the M-trail deployment, respectively. In this paper, the m-trail design problem is investigated. To gain deeper understanding of the problem, we firstly conduct a bound analysis on the minimum length of alarm code required for UFL. Then, a novel algorithm based on random code assignment (RCA) and random code swapping (RCS) is developed for solving the m-trail design problem. The algorithm prototype can be found in. The algorithm is verified by comparing with an integer linear program (ILP), and the results demonstrate its superiority in minimizing the fault management cost and bandwidth consumption while achieving significant reduction in computation time. To investigate the impact of topology diversity, extensive simulation is conducted on thousands of random network topologies with systematically increased network connectivity. Lastly, we provide abundant discussions and interesting conclusive remarks that position our discoveries.

In this paper, a novel availability-constrained survivable routing algorithm, called generalized dedicated protection (GDP), is introduced for circuit switched mesh networks. The goal of the algorithm is minimizing the cost of reserved bandwidth for protection purposes while a predefined connection availability is guaranteed. The paper gives a formal description of the working and dedicated protection paths/segments allocation problem with connection availability constraints. Firstly, a connection availability evaluation method is proposed for modeling dependent or independent failures based on state enumeration. Secondly, it is shown that GDP is NP-complete even when splitting the traffic on multiple routes is allowed, and formulated as an integer linear program (ILP). Finally, simulation is conducted to verify the proposed availability evaluation method, and the GDP protection algorithms with their existing counterparts.

This paper proposes two new optimization algorithms for the optimal design of PI controllers dedicated to a class of second-order plants with integral component and variable parameters. The sensitivity analysis with respect to the parametric variations of the controlled plant is supported by the derivation of sensitivity models. Several objective functions are defined based on the augmentation of the output sensitivity functions over the widely used integral of absolute error criterion. The new algorithms are focused on particle swarm optimization algorithms. One case study associated with several analyses proves the advantages of the proposed algorithm.

Model-based development methodologies are gaining ground as software applications are getting more and more complex while the pressure to decrease time-to-market continually increase. Domain-specific modeling tools that support system analysis, simulation, and automatic code generation can increase productivity. However, most domain-specific model translators are still manually written. This paper presents a technique that automatically generates a domain-specific application programming interface from the same metamodels that are used to define the domain-specific modeling language itself. This facilitates the creation of domain-specific model translators by providing a high-level abstraction hiding all the cumbersome modeling tool-specific implementation details from the developer. The approach is illustrated using the generic modeling environment and the Microsoft .NET C# language.

The blood glucose system is one of the most important systems of the human body, since energy transport is fulfilled through this complex endocrine control process. Because of its great importance (in case of failure, its primary consequence diabetes mellitus appears), many models were published, most of them with phenomenological approach. The current paper focuses on a new molecular model published recently. By modifying it to model the failure of pancreatic insulin secretion that characterizes Type 1 diabetes mellitus, soft computing based controller is designed. Rough rule base is generated with subtractive clustering which is followed by its refinement by parameter tuning. As a result, an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) is created. Simulation results are in accordance with the behavior of the healthy human blood glucose system.

Emerging massively multiplayer online real time strategy games require complex game server architecture to make the transmission of the state information of a huge number of units generated by a lot of players feasible. This architecture design is supported by network traffic simulations based on the accurate characterization of player behavior. However, these characteristics of player behavior in RTS games have not been investigated yet, thus, this is the main motivation of this paper. In particular, we introduce a method that can identify the war periods in real-time strategy game sessions based on non-intrusive measurements thus, it is possible to analyze a vast number of game plays. The paper also presents some early results comparing the real and gaming worlds.
