In this paper we conduct a delay analysis of IEEE 802.16 wireless metropolitan area network. In particular, we address the overall message delay, which consists of the reservation and scheduling components. Unicast polling is used for bandwidth reservation and round-robin scheduling is applied at the base station. A discrete-time analytical model is developed with general independent and identically distributed arrivals during a time slot. The model enables asymmetric traffic flows and different message sizes at the subscriber stations. The exact mean overall delay is obtained for the nrtPS service flow in the scenario when the base station splits the subscriber stations into individually polled groups. The analytical model is verified by means of simulation.

The solder joints properties are in connection with their microstructure, which is the result of the soldering process temperature gradient action over the trinomial solder alloy/paste, electronic components terminals/pin and PCBs pads characteristics (4P soldering model). The temperature gradient was determinated by the specific thermal profile of the soldering process. As part of COST Action MP0602, Working Group 2 (The properties of solder joints), the HISOLD 4P-Q&R group project investigated, into integrated approach, the properties of solder joints realized by different paste-pad-pin-process reflow soldering formulas, with focus on innovative lead-free solder alloys, including composite type with nanoparticles content. The 4P soldering model concept and the project proposed investigations are based on numerous experiments and macro/microstructural analyzes including optical and X-ray inspections, surface acoustic microscopy (SAM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nanoindentation and electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD), before and after electrical, mechanical and climatic tests. Proposals for solder joints functionality standard test methods, test vehicles and data bases was elaborated as result of environmental stress studies, thermodynamical, rheological and macro/microstructural solder joints analyses, based on IPC references. A standard SAC solder alloy and the reflow soldering process was used as reference. As a consequence, the DFM concept can be improved with practical manufacturing requirements.

The scope of the paper is the strange behavior of direct torque controlled (DTC) induction machine (IM) resulting from the nonlinearity of hysteresis comparators. A piecewise-defined, non-stroboscopic, discrete-time Poincare map can be constructed for the system. The movement of the two controlled state variables, the stator flux linkage and the electric torque, within the hysteresis loops had to be determined from switch to switch. This complex Poincare map takes into account the fast switching operations of the voltage source converter (VSC). Periodic, subharmonic, chaotic and intermittent chaotic states along a special bifurcation series caused by discontinuity of the Poincare mapping function were detected. In order to give a better insight into the system operation, a one-dimensional piecewise linear map is developed, numerous subharmonic states were analyzed.

In software engineering, modeling tools have become widely accepted to increase application reliability and decrease development time. The UML and the OCL became industry standards and are supported by many Computer-Aided Software Engineering tools. The increasing number of modeled functionalities results in complex models that need more and more textual constraints to express the hidden restrictions applying to the systems. The usual scenario of model development is to create an initial model of the system, and then fine-tune it with simple modifications. During development, rebuilding all the constraints is unnecessary when only a few changes have been applied. In this paper, we present an algorithm that handles changes incrementally on expression level, thus required rebuilds are kept to a minimum. The background and implementation framework for the discussed compiler is the Visual Modeling and Transformation System, but the algorithm is general enough to support any tree-based compiler integrated into an IDE.

Uneven solder mask thickness or other artifacts on PCBs can keep the stencil away from the PCB during stencil printing, which cause large deposited solder paste volume, and can result in solder bridges after reflow soldering. In our experiment we have investigated the deformation properties of stencils. The load-strain curve of a 125 ¿m thick stainless steel stencil was measured on nine locations. By the deformation experiments, the FEM (Finite Element Method) model of the stencil was created. With FEM simulations, the minimum technological distances (distance between artifacts and solder pads) for a range of step heights (difference between artifact height and pad height) and for different stencil thicknesses were determined. With the adherence to this technological distance, the stencil can bend down to the pad, and the proper amount of solder paste can be deposited onto the pad.

In many engineering applications, linear models are preferred, even if it is known that the system is nonlinear. A large class of nonlinear systems, excited with random excitations, can be represented as Y = G BLA U + Y S , with G BLA the best linear approximation, and Y S a nonlinear noise source that represents that part of the output that is not captured by the linear approximation. Because G BLA not only depends upon the linear dynamics, but also on the nonlinear distortions, it will vary if the input power is changed. In this paper, we study under what conditions (class of excitations, class of nonlinear systems) these variations of G BLA can be bounded, starting from the knowledge of the power spectrum S YS . Since S YS can be easily measured using well designed measurement procedures, it becomes possible to provide the designer with an upper bound for the variations of G BLA , leading to more robust design procedures.

Autonomous robot navigation is an important research field because these robots can solve problems where the human presence is impossible, dangerous, expensive, or uncomfortable. In this paper, a new hybrid autonomous navigation method is introduced. The algorithm is composed of visibility graph based global navigation and simple potential field based local navigation parts. It applies a new automated graph generation method which may become necessary if, because of the observed new obstacles, a new path should be generated. The quasi optimal route is found by applying the well known A* algorithm on the graph. The presented technique offers a quasi optimal universal navigation technique which can successfully be used in all, known, unknown, and dynamically changing environments.

In this work we define the term of phonebook centric-social networks, describe a graph model and study structural properties of this. The key difference between phonebook-centric social networks and usual social networks is allowing synchronization between the phonebook of the mobile phone and the network. By the synchronization the goal is to identify the persons listed in the phonebook and the network, it means to find similar entries and keep the data consistent. In that way the contacts of a member of a phonebook-centric social network becomes independent from the current phone. The number of similarities is crucial in phonebook-centric social networks from scalability point of view. We found that the distribution of similarities can be very well approximated by power law distribution. This means that few users involve a huge amount of similarities while the most of them only few ones.

Untraceability of vehicles is an important requirement in future vehicle communications systems. Unfortunately, heartbeat messages used by many safety applications provide a constant stream of location data, and without any protection measures, they make tracking of vehicles easy even for a passive eavesdropper. One commonly known solution is to transmit heartbeats under pseudonyms that are changed regularly in order to obfuscate the trajectory of vehicles. However, this approach is effective only if some silent period is kept during the pseudonym change and several vehicles change their pseudonyms nearly at the same time and at the same location. Unlike previous works that proposed explicit synchronization between a group of vehicles and/or required pseudonym change in a designated physical area (i.e., a static mix zone), we propose a much simpler approach that does not need any explicit cooperation between vehicles and any infrastructure support. Our basic idea is that vehicles should not transmit heartbeat messages when their speed drops below a given threshold, say 30 km/h, and they should change pseudonym during each such silent period. This ensures that vehicles stopping at traffic lights or moving slowly in a traffic jam will all refrain from transmitting heartbeats and change their pseudonyms nearly at the same time and location. Thus, our scheme ensures both silent periods and synchronized pseudonym change in time and space, but it does so in an implicit way. We also argue that the risk of a fatal accident at a slow speed is low, and therefore, our scheme does not seriously impact safety-of-life. In addition, refraining from sending heartbeat messages when moving at low speed also relieves vehicles of the burden of verifying a potentially large amount of digital signatures, and thus, makes it possible to implement vehicle communications with less expensive equipments.
