Nowadays the quality of thermal interface materials (TIM) has a growing importance as the increasing dissipation level of ICs requires more and more sophisticated solutions to reduce the R th along the heat-flow path. The recent approach of TIM manufacturers is to use nanoparticles as fillings in TIM materials, in order to enhance considerably the TIM thermal conductivity. On the other hand this solution raises difficulties in the characterization of these materials. Namely, the resolution of the conventional methods is not high enough to measure resistance values as low as 0.01-0.05 Kcm 2 /W. This is the reason why we developed static TIM tester equipment using some new concepts. The main idea behind our design is to use the capabilities of microelectronics in order to make small sized sensors both for temperature and heat flux sensing. This way it is possible to place these sensors in the closest proximity of the measured sample. The status of this work is presented in the paper.

In point-multipoint (PmP) systems the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) highly depends on the assignment of terminal stations (TS) to base stations (BS). The broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) systems operate at high carrier frequencies, i.e. microwave domain. In this frequency range wave propagation is highly influenced by precipitation, especially rain. Feeding of base stations can be solved with fiber optic or e.g. with satellite. In this work satellite feeding is assumed, which avoids land demolition caused by fiber deployment, but its drawback is the precipitation attenuation of Earth-space links. Applying site diversity can mitigate rain attenuation effects; however, known site diversity methods are only considering downlink channel quality and during site diversity terminals do not consider decisions of each other. By site diversity when downlink signal level decreases below a threshold, terminal station can be assigned to an other base station, though in point-multipoint systems this base station re-assignment can raise uplink interferences at other terminals. Present contribution provides a special site diversity which adopts genetic algorithm (GA) to simultaneously optimize downlink and uplink SINR values in BFWA. A convergence analysis method of the applied genetic algorithm is provided using Markov chain model.

Optoelectronic reduction of intensity noise is presented for solid-state lasers. However the noise suppression feedback loop can make the laser operate in its chaotic regime. The paper shows the way to chaos through bifurcations at different levels of the feedback signal. Additionally a limit for chaos free operation is also given. The bifurcation diagram of the controlled laser is calculated as well.

Nowadays in optical networks there is a trend to extend the maximum transmission distance. Several technical solutions are known but the simplest one is to increase the signal power in the optical fiber. However, the nonlinear behavior of the optical fiber limits the signal power e.g. the span of the all-optical network. This paper presents an analytical model and calculation results for the signal quality degradation in an 8-channel and an 18-channel, 2.5 Gbps coarse wavelength-division- multiplexing (CWDM) system. Based on the proposed model and performed analysis we give the optimal value of the signal power at the transmitter point.

BitTorrent is one of the most efficient peer-to-peer content sharing protocols. The authors took part in implementing SymTorrent: a full featured BitTorrent client application for high-end mobile phones based on Symbian OS. Recently, they have also brought the BitTorrent technology to low-end mobile by creating a prototype application, called MobTorrent. Currently MobTorrent supports only content downloading (implementation of upload functionality is ongoing). The target platform of MobTorrent is the S40 platform, which is based on the Java Micro Edition technology. This paper contains a brief overview of the BitTorrent protocol, introduces the applications and outlines the demonstration.

Integration of heterogonous systems is an important issue today. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is usually the choice of software vendors to solve the problem. However it provides a system independent way for the communication, SOA does not offer a common model for the used data structures. Moreover different applications are using different structures for the same real world entities. Integrating these systems can not be handled directly by standard SOA tools and methodology. Our new approach will demonstrate how to solve the integration problem of InterJob Executive Search Company working with various heterogonous systems. To integrate the systems of branch offices of InterJob a new pool service and semantic concepts were introduced. Our approach adds semantics as meta-data to the services and performs automatic data transformation in process run-time. Original services are encapsulated and new services are published applying a common interface. The branch offices are able to communicate with each other, using these new services for the data exchange.

In both, metropolitan optical networks (MON) and long haul optical networks (LHON) the signal quality is often influenced by the physical impairments, therefore proper impairment constrained routing decisions are needed. In this paper we propose two new approaches that jointly perform, on the one hand, routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) and, on the other hand, either tuning the signal power of certain wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) channels or grooming the traffic of some WDM channels in nodes that are grooming capable. We evaluate the proposed optimization methods for both, single and multilayer networks. In the first case we assume that no signal regeneration is allowed along the path, only re-amplification, while in the more complex two-layer case we assume grooming in the electronic layer that implicitly performs 3R signal regeneration and wavelength conversion as well.

One of the key tasks in computer vision is the identification and matching of coherent shapes in different images. In signature verification these shapes are represented by the strokes of the signature. Strokes may fall apart, close up, change or simply disappear among different signatures of the same signer. This paper proposes an algorithm to tackle the stroke matching problem using an area based method for finding and linking corresponding strokes and dynamic time warping to perform intra stroke matching. Using the above method the two dimensional image comparison problem can be reduced to a one dimensional case. The method was tested on the corpus of the 2004 Signature Verification Competition; experimental results are presented and evaluated. A generalized form of the algorithm could well be applied on other areas of computer vision.

This paper investigates the Markov property of the fading process measured on land mobile satellite (LMS) channel and determines the appropriate order of discrete state and discrete time Markov chain, which is capable to reproduce the original fading process. The investigated radio link is an L- band terrestrial-satellite channel, measured on board of a moving vehicle in different environments (urban and highway), therefore the channel is effected by multipath/shadowing propagation impairments. As a first approach of the problem, the analog received power process will be transformed into a digital fading process in order to handle it as a two-state (fade/non-fade according to the given threshold) process. To correctly reproduce the high order statistics of the fading process an appropriate discrete time and discrete state homogenous Markov chain has to be selected. The order of the model influences its capability to reproduce the channel memory. With properly selected threshold, by transforming the analog fading process into a fading/non-fading digital process a Chi-square test can be applied to determine the order of the process. Our investigations are showing that the order of the two-state fade/non-fade process slightly depends on the threshold of separation the fade and interfade events. The results can be applied also to test the order in case of more than two states, when the quantization of the attenuation amplitude performed for multiple levels.

This paper will present a novel survivable routing method for circuit switched mesh networks, which aim to guarantee a pre-defined end-to-end availability for each connection. The proposed method is based on the traditional dedicated protection concept. However, the widely installed dedicated path protection often comes up against topological bounds and is not able to guarantee a certain level of end-to-end connection availability for two communicating nodes in the network. In order to improve the accuracy of availability evaluation of network connections, the failure of network elements is assumed not to be independent and the most general definition of shared risk group (SRG) is adopted. In the study we propose methods to generate an SRG list, such that by protecting single a SRG failure, the pre-defined connection availability is guaranteed. The proposed protection scheme, called generalized dedicated protection (GDP), inherits the simplicity of dedicated protection approaches; however it can offer a guarantee on arbitrary connection availability. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to verify the advantages gained in the proposed implementation relative to the previously reported counterparts.
