The performance of information systems is a very important and complicated consideration. With the help of a proper performance model and an appropriate evaluation algorithm, performance metrics can be predicted. The goal of our work is to enhance the Mean-Value Analysis evaluation algorithm based on the investigation of thread pools. With the help of a queueing model and the enhanced performance evaluation algorithm the performance metrics of multi-tier information systems can be predicted much more accurate. In our work, the convergence of the original and the enhanced algorithms is analyzed, as well. In addition, the enhanced algorithm is experimentally validated.

In this paper a further step towards a novel approach to adaptive nonlinear control developed at budapest Tech in the past few years is reported. Its main advantage in comparison with the complicated Lyapunov function based techniques is that it is based on simple geometric considerations on the basis of which the control task can be formulated as a fixed point problem for the solution of which a contractive mapping is created that generates an iterative Cauchy sequence for single input-single output (SISO) systems. Consequently it converges to the fixed point that is the solution of the control task. In the formerly developed approaches for monotone increasing or monotone decreasing systems the proper fixed points had only a finite basin of attraction outside of which the iteration might become divergent. The here sketched potential solutions apply a special function built up of the ldquoresponse functionrdquo of the excited system under control and of a few parameters. This function has almost constant value apart from a finite region in which it has a ldquowrinklerdquo in the vicinity of the desired solution that is the ldquoproperrdquo fixed point of this function. By the use of an affine approximation of the response function around the solution it is shown that at one of its sides this fixed point is repulsive, while at the opposite side it is attractive. It is shown, too, that at the repulsive side another, so called ldquofalserdquo fixed point is present that is globally attractive, with the exception of the basin of attraction of the ldquoproperrdquo one. This structure is advantageous because (a) no divergence can occur in the iteration, (b) the convergence to the ldquofalserdquo value can easily be detected, and (c) by using some ancillary tricks in the most of the cases the solution can be kicked from the wrong fixed point into the basin of attraction of the ldquoproper onerdquo. In the paper preliminary calculations are presented.

Intensity inhomogeneity or intensity non-uniformity (INU) is an undesired phenomenon that represents the main obstacle for MR image segmentation and registration methods. Various techniques have been proposed to eliminate or compensate the INU, most of which are embedded into clustering algorithms. This paper proposes a multiple stage fuzzy c-means (FCM) based algorithm for the estimation and compensation of the slowly varying additive or multiplicative noise, supported by a pre-filtering technique for Gaussian and impulse noise elimination. The slowly varying behavior of the bias or gain field is assured by a smoothening filter that performs a context dependent averaging, based on a morphological criterion. The experiments using 2-D synthetic phantoms and real MR images show, that the proposed method provides accurate segmentation. The produced segmentation and fuzzy membership values can serve as excellent support for 3-D registration and segmentation techniques.

The development of medical imaging equipments generates growing amount of pictorial data from the intern organs of the human body. On the other hand the automatically evaluation of the huge amount of pictures and videos is in the very beginning phase, which causes a high need for well trained personal. Over the high cost, the lack of sophisticated and reliable software for the support of the diagnostic task became the most important limitation of the use of the new technologies. In this paper we will introduce two relatively new technology: the use of miniaturized camera for internal examination of the gastrointestinal tract (capsule endoscopy), and the virtual colonoscopy. We will show that advanced visualization methods can support the hard task of the doctors, and the use of picture processing technologies makes the evaluation task more convenient.

As the architecture of participation became the main design principle in Web2.0, more and more content sharing solutions have appeared on the Internet. These systems encourage end users to create, publish, tag and consume content. Most of them offer a web interface to access the service and are typically implemented with the traditional client-server software architecture. Due to client-server architecture they require additional investments on the backend side as the service attracts more and more users. In this paper we propose an innovative content sharing solution, called Swarm, which offers the following benefits to service providers: cost efficiency, mobility support and necessary control points to prevent misuse of the service. We propose an architecture that combines the advantages of P2P and client-server systems into a single, competitive hybrid solution. First, we introduce the proposed architecture with the most important features, discuss our experience with the reference implementation and finally demonstrate calculations describing the cost efficiency of the Swarm solution.

While intercell interference coordination (ICIC) for the downlink of multi-cell systems in general and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) networks in particular has been extensively studied, the uplink has received less attention. For the uplink, the impact of ICIC on the overall system throughput ("the ICIC gain") must be analyzed in a system model that captures specific constraints such as power limitation and the behavior of other radio resource management functions including scheduling, fast packet retransmissions by means of hybrid automatic repeat requests (HARQ), power control and adaptive modulation and code rate selection. In this paper we investigate the ICIC gain for the uplink of the 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) system and find that this gain much depends on the employed traffic model. Specifically, for non greedy (sometimes termed "non full buffer") traffic sources, HARQ and link adaptation are able to compensate the effect of intercell collisions and therefore the real ICIC gains are typically smaller than those reported based on full buffer models assuming greedy traffic. We expect that our findings provide useful insights for the system design of ICIC schemes.

The design and the initial realization of control on an experimental in-door unmanned autonomous quadrotor helicopter is presented. This is a hierarchical embedded model-based control scheme that is built upon the concept of back-stepping, and is applied on an electric motor-driven quadrotor UAV hardware that is equipped with an embedded on-board computer, inertial sensor unit, as well as facilities that make it suitable to be involved in an in-door positioning system, and wireless digital communication network. This realization forms an important step in the development process of a more advanced realization of an UAV suitable for practical applications; it aims clarification of the control principles, acquiring experience in solving control tasks, and getting skills for the development of further realizations.

Web-based software systems access some resources while executing the requests of the clients, typically several requests arrive at the same time, thus, competitive situation is established for the resources. In case of modeling such situation queueing model-based approaches are widely recognized. In our work, novel models and algorithms have been proposed to model the queue limit performance factor. In addition, the computational complexity and the limit analysis of the proposed models and algorithms have been provided. Moreover, the practical application of the results has been shown.

The main aim of this paper is to introduce a method for approximating surfaces given by a set of discrete points with possible additional parameters. The method uses the higher order singular value decomposition based on canonical form of two-variable TP (tensor product) functions. Except of approximation abilities of this principle, the paper focuses on the compression properties of the method, as well. The method is able to achieve high compression rate in the input data by keeping the error at remarkable lower level.

In this paper we propose a new traffic engineering scheme to be used jointly with protection in multi-layer, grooming-capable, optical-beared networks. To make the working and protection paths of demands better adapt to changing traffic and network conditions we propose the adaptive multi-layer traffic engineering (AMLTE) scheme that "tailors" i.e., fragments and de-fragments wavelength paths in a fully automatic distributed way.
