BitTorrent is an efficient peer-to-peer content sharing protocol. In this paper we investigate how this popular technology can be brought to mobile handheld devices. As handheld devices are increasingly used for music and video consumption it is reasonable to consider how a handheld device can join existing communities and be used to find, access, and play multimedia content. The paper is based on the experiences of BitTorrent implementation on mainstream mobile phones (Nokia Series 40) over Java Micro Edition platform. The paper analyses the important implementation issues of such large peer-to-peer application on low end mobile devices and shares practical experiences. The performance of the application is evaluated by speed and memory usage measurements.

In this paper we study dynamically changing multicast trees (light-trees) in double-layer optical networks. In this scenario, the continuous changing of multicast endpoints causes the degradation of the tree. Therefore a huge amount of network resources can be spared by regular reconfiguration. The benefit of reconfiguration is investigated for different routing algorithms and reconfiguration periods.

In railway train-borne equipment, the driver machine interface (DMI) acts like a bridge between the train driver and the onboard automatic train control system (European Vital Computer, EVC). While the DMI is required to operate in a critical context, current DMIs have no safety requirements. This implies that the EVC may automatically stop the train whenever the DMI is suspected to misbehave, leading to delay of the train, inconvenience for passengers and consequent possible profit loss. For these reasons a DMI with higher safety requirements is worth to be taken into account, even if it implies higher costs. The SAFEDMI European project aims at developing (i) a DMI at Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) using off-the-shelf components and a simple hardware architecture to reduce costs, and (ii) a SIL 2 wireless communication support for maintenance. This paper describes the architecture of a DMI which satisfies these objectives. The main hardware and software characteristics will be shown, including the proposed error detection techniques and the related fault handling (characterized by a new operational mode that allows DMI to restart silently, thus reducing unexpected train stops).

Recent investigations in the field of complex networks include the analysis of distributions of connections in particular networks and the clustering properties of networks. In the first part of my presentation I analyse a network: the dependency graph of the software packages of the Ubuntu distribution of GNU/Linux. It is a directed acyclic graph, and I analyse the degree distribution of the graph for in-degrees (connections directed into a node, the dependent packages), out-degrees (connections directed away from a node) and plain-degrees. I also analyse the clustering properties of the graph. In the second part, I discuss the teaching of these topics at the college level. Using the NetworkX modul for the Python programming language students can easily investigate these properties of the package dependence graph.

A 400 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) link with a single light-intensity modulator was upgraded for simultaneous transmission of STM-16 2.5 Gbps baseband data and digital-video-broadcast-terrestrial DVBT utilizing a 40 GHz subcarrier. An optical circulator and narrowband fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) were used to separate the signals in the optical domain and allow for simple direct baseband detection of both.

The paper investigates a model predictive control (MPC) strategy specialized in urban traffic management in order to relieve traffic congestion, reduce travel time and improve homogenous traffic flow. Over the theory the realization of the control method is also presented. To validate the effectiveness of the controller a busy traffic network was chosen for test field. The MPC strategy was implemented into the test network control system (hardware in loop simulation). The applied environment is a microscopic traffic simulator with mathematical software and proper computational applications for the evaluation. The simulation results prove the effectiveness of the designed MPC based traffic control strategy. The system is able to improve the network efficiency and reduce travel time, creating optimal flow in the network subjected to control input constraints.

Neurosurgery was the first field of application for robots in interventional medicine 20 years ago, and since then dozens of research projects have been focusing on brain and spine surgery, differently addressing the challenges of accuracy and effectiveness. We have developed a cooperatively-controlled system to assist with skull base drilling, to improve the safety and quality of neurosurgery while reducing the operating time. This paper presents the entire system, the preliminary results of phantom and cadaver tests and our efforts to improve the accuracy of the components. The residual error of NeuroMate robot calibration was reduced by 24%, while decreasing the noise of the integrated StealthStation navigation system by 53%. An effective optical tracking based patient motion compensation method has been implemented and tested. The results verify the effectiveness of the system and allow for further research. We hope that by improving the accuracy and safety, we can one day introduce this system into clinical use.

This paper describes the preliminary results for detecting slippery road conditions. The detector will be implemented in a larger system intended to increase the safety margin for vehicle drivers, by utilising so-called co-operative driving where infrastructure to vehicle communications operate seamlessly. The ice detection system is based on intensity differences in reflectance for horizontal and vertical polarisation planes. The results show that relative light reflection in the horizontal plane compared to the vertical plane is 59% higher in the case of ice than for dry asphalt. Furthermore, the detector includes a so-called graininess analysis, which provided a 32% reduction in granularity when moving from dry asphalt to ice. Combining these two methods enables a robust and reliable ice/wet road detection application. This paper also briefly describes how the ice detection application can be connected to the overall safespot safety system, its particular relevance and its planned implementation on the test sites.

A novel specular surface reconstruction approach developed for and used in an experimental multi-camera corneal topographer arrangement is presented in the paper. The tear-film coated, and therefore specular, corneal surface is mathematically reconstructed from the corneal images taken simultaneously by the calibrated cameras of the arrangement. The surface reconstruction is achieved by the joint solution of partial differential equations (PDE's) that is derived from the mapping between the measurement-pattern and its virtual images taken by the cameras. The PDE's - each given in an advantageous form for one of the cameras - describe the phenomenon of light-reflection at the corneal surface. The portions of the corneal surface that reflect - possibly different - measurement-pattern points to more than one camera convey starting points for the mathematical reconstruction of the surface.

In this paper a further step towards a novel approach to adaptive nonlinear control developed at budapest Tech in the past few years is reported. Its main advantage in comparison with the complicated Lyapunov function based techniques is that its fundament is some simple geometric consideration allowing to formulate the control task as a Fixed Point Problem for the solution of which various Contractive Mappings can be created that generate Iterative Cauchy Sequences for Single Input - Single Output (SISO) systems. These sequences can converge to the fixed points that are the solutions of the control tasks. Recently alternative potential solutions were proposed and sketched by the use of special functions built up of the "response function" of the excited system under control. These functions have almost constant values apart from a finite region in which they have a "wrinkle" in the vicinity of the desired solution that is the "proper" fixed point of these functions. It was shown that at one of their sides these fixed points were repulsive, while at the opposite side they were attractive. It was shown, too, that at the repulsive side another, so called "false" fixed points were present that were globally attractive, with the exception of the basins of attraction of the "proper" ones. This structure seemed to be advantageous because no divergences could occur in the iterations, the convergence to the "false" values could easily be detected, and by using some ancillary tricks in the most of the cases the solutions could be kicked from the wrong fixed points into the basins of attraction of the "proper ones". It was expected that via adding simple rules to the application of these transformations good adaptive control can be developed.
