Recently there is a growing interest in providing and improving radio coverage for mobile phones and WLANs inside buildings. The need of such coverage appears mainly in office buildings, shopping malls, train stations where the subscriber density is very high. The cost of cellular systems and also the one of indoor wireless systems depend highly on the number of base stations required to achieve the desired coverage for a given level of field strength. By using hybrid fibre radio (HFR), architecture in combining wireless and optical network elements, large part of the radio complexity can be reduced and therefore an effective solution will be provided for indoor WLAN or mobile cellular radio coverage. This paper presents an approach in optimizing the HFR radio coverage for indoor environments. The genetic algorithm (GA) is used to determine the proper access point positions to achieve optimum coverage.[l, 6] Sample calculations and measurements are performed to prove the proposed method and to investigate the improvement available.

Multimedia applications are becoming increasingly popular in IP networks, while in mobile environment the limited bandwidth and the higher error rate arise in spite of its popularity. The wireless network characteristics make the deployment of these applications more challenging. Retransmission-based error recovery is considered inappropriate for multimedia applications, because of its latency. However, this solution can be attractive because it requires minimal network bandwidth and processing cost as well as improvement of the video quality. Despite its latency, retransmission can be used successfully in many cases, especially if playout buffering is employed. In this paper we propose a source controlled and playout time oriented retransmission scheme for multimedia streaming. Due to source controlling the receiver do not need to send additional retransmission request messages. The other advantage of transmitter controlled decision algorithm is that all the needed information is available at the source due to DCCP transport protocol. Therefore no additional network measurements and probe messages are needed. The results show that our scheme reduces traffic overhead generated by retransmission and hardly degrades the number of unsuccessfully retransmitted packets at all.

Our aim is to develop a microwave (X-band) antenna whose radiation pattern is electronically controlled. The radiation pattern of the regular antennas is determinated by the Fourier-transform of the phase and amplitude distribution on the antenna aperture. This radiation pattern is fixed by the mechanics so the alteration of it is impossible. Therefore let us construct an antenna system, which contains several antenna elements. All elements are actuated by separated transmitters, let us control the amplitude and the phase of the supplying current of the antenna elements. In such way, we are able to control the radiation pattern of the antenna system. The controlling is computerized so that there is a possibility to change the radiation pattern several times in a second.

This contribution provides a method to synthesize attenuation time series for land mobile satellite links. The time series generator is based on an attenuation threshold dependent fade duration model of the land mobile satellite channel [1, 7]. The fade duration is modeled with partitioned Fritchman's Markov-chain and parameterized on a land mobile satellite measurement performed on the board of a moving vehicle, thus the fading events can be observed in the measurement data are due the multipath propagation. To achieve attenuation time series from the fade duration process the synthesized time series are generated in two steps. At first a two-state Markov model applied to generate the long term behavior of the channel and it models the fading/non fading states. The second step is to simulate the fine structure of the single fading events for the fading periods calculated previously with the two-state fade/non-fade Markov chain. The attenuation threshold dependent Fritchman's model of the fade duration is applicable for the parameterization of the two-state fade/non-fade model and also for the generation of single fading events with any desired duration and fade depth. This paper introduces a modeling method to express the spatial variations of the propagation channel in a cellular mobile radio system which consists of a backbone node and several millimeter band links forming a star network around the node. The area covered by this system is only a few square kilometers but propagation impairments can be observed if a rain cell moves across this field. One of the characteristics of the channel what can be used by the system design engineers is the fade duration statistics. At first we introduce a Markov-chain based model [4] to calculate the fade duration statistics for the radio links. This model is based on the long-term (one year) measurement of the channel; therefore it is not applicable to show the local variability of the channel if a rain cell is moving over the cover area of the node. A second Markov model of a two dimensional (2D) nonsymmetrical random walk will be introduced to characterize the movement of the rain cell. The dimension of the rainy area and the point rainfall rate will be expressed by the EXCELLmodel[2]. We will show that the local random walk model, the rain rate and attenuation calculations allows us to generate attenuation time series caused by the moving rain cell and express the spatial variations of the fade duration in a start-formed microwave network.

The paper is concerned with a novel adaptive game server protocol optimization to combat network latencies in the case of heterogeneous network environment. In this way, game playing becomes feasible for clients accessing the game via different networks, which can pave the way to securing a higher income for the game industry and service providers. The sever based game protocol is viewed as a number of arrival processes from the clients (which are characterized by different delays) and periodical updates sent by the server to the clients. Game quality is quantified by two measures: (i) the tail probability of the maximal idle time; and (ii) the probability of missing an update period. Our objective is to chose server update time subject to minimizing the probability of the maximal idle time exceeding a certain threshold (which threshold is associated with the "psycho-physically approved quality of the game"). In order to calculate the optimal server update time and the underlying tail distribution, statistical tools from large deviation theory are used. Furthermore, an adaptive on-line algorithm has been developed which can adjust the server update time by estimating the corresponding delay probability density functions based on past observations. Due to the new method, game quality can be significantly improved despite the wide range of client latencies which typically characterize the heterogeneous network environment. In this way, more players can be served which can further increase the business potential of network games. The performance of the new method has been evaluated by using measurements and extensive simulations.

In building propagation measurements, in the frequency band of 433 MHz are presented for narrow band applications, short range devices especially active and passive Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). The propagation model based on 3D FDTD (Finite Difference Time Domain) simulation is proposed and the simulated results are compared with measured ones. The memory and computational time requirements are analyzed for a complex environment.

Effect of the rotation of antennas on the capacity of the multiple-input -multiple-output (MIMO) system is demonstrated by numerical simulation. Both the transmitter and the receiver consist of three central-fed electrical dipole antennas. The MIMO channel matrix is made by double bouncing scattering model. Simulation shows that the highest value of the capacity can be when the angle to axis Z is about 50deg.
