Minimization of maximum production time (Makespan) in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) scheduling problems is an important objective and may result in good system performances. To realize a makespan close to the global minimum production time is a suitable goal for scheduling But answering the question how close this goal can be approached is a very complicated problem. In this paper bottleneck scheduling and Lot Streaming (LS) are used for a Job shop Scheduling Problem (JSP). The new contribution of the paper is applying a Brute Force Method (BFM) to LS. The effect of setup times is considered and numerical example is given.

Thermal qualification of the die attach of semiconductor devices is a very important element in the device characterization as the temperature of the chip is strongly affected by the quality of the die attach. Voids or delaminations in this layer may cause higher temperature elevation and thus damage or shorter lifetime. Thermal test of each device in the manufacturing process would be the best solution for eliminating the devices with wrong die attach layer. In this paper we will present the short time thermal transient measurement method and the structure function evaluation through simulations and measurements for die attach characterization. We will also present a method for eliminating the very time consuming calibration process. Using the proposed methods even the in-line testing of LEDs can be accomplished.

In this paper, we introduce PANEL, a position-based aggregator node election protocol for wireless sensor networks. The novelty of PANEL with respect to other aggregator node election protocols is that it supports asynchronous sensor network applications where the sensor readings are fetched by the base stations after some delay. In particular, the motivation for the design of PANEL was to support reliable and persistent data storage applications, such as TinyPEDS. PANEL ensures load balancing, and it supports intra-and inter-cluster routing allowing sensor to aggregator, aggregator to aggregator, base station to aggregator, and aggregator to base station communications. We also present simulation results showing that PANEL is very energy efficient.

Optical generation of RF and mm-wave signals is an appealing solution. There are several different optical methods to generate microwave carriers including the development of new devices. In this paper we propose a new approach, which utilizes the wavelength chirp of the semiconductor DFB lasers. With a simple two-arm combiner scheme this property of directly modulated lasers, which is usually a limiting factor at telecommunication solutions, can be used to generate sweep and pulse mode RF carriers.

Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) is a useful tool for assessing workmanship compliance in production PCB assembly environments. With advanced lighting, optics, and image processing capabilities, the machines greatly enhance inspection repeatability, accuracy and throughput. The in-line automatic optical inspection machines usually are not accurate enough to measure the Cmk of the component placement machines, but the x,y shift and the rotation of the components could be measured with circa 25 mum precision.

This paper is devoted to the analysis and adaptive control of a platoon of vehicles that behaves like a virtual train. It is supposed that the first vehicle plays leading role while the other members have local controllers trained for keeping a safe tracking distance between themselves and the preceding one. In the model investigated the connection between the vehicles acts like an elastic spring without "reaction forces", i.e the (n + 1) th member's motion is influenced by that of the n th member but the members do not affect the motion of the preceding ones. It is supposed that the leading vehicle can freely move, and the aim is to guarantee smooth motion for the last cart of the platoon that may be followed by a participant of the road communication whose driving comfort has to be kept in mind. The carts are modeled as rigid bodies while their loads are represented by masses connected to their carts by elastic springs of dynamic friction. It is shown that the simple semi-mechanistic connection between the carts can result in instable motion due to the resonance in the interaction between the loads and the carts. This effect can be eliminated if the acceleration of the preceding cart is also taken into account in the motion of the actual one. Furthermore, if an adaptive controller of lucid geometric interpretation akin to Soft Computing Solutions is also applied the last cart can trace the nominal trajectory with very good precision.

In this paper we show that the performance of the generic SMTP servers are more limited than we previously thought. We implemented a environment to test SMTP server performance focusing on denial of service (DoS) attacks. Our measurements show that a standard SMTP server can be easily overloaded by sending simple email messages and the overload can occur without consuming all network bandwidth. Our measurements also show that the usage of content filtering applications can harm the performance so much that the server become even more vulnerable to DoS attacks. In the paper we describe the problems of performance measurements in SMTP environment and we also give a detailed background about the performed measurements.

Ambient-intelligence systems are characterized by a shift away from desktop computers to a variety of devices, which are unobtrusively embedded in the user environment. The usage of small computing nodes (particles) is one of the most efficient ways of their implementation. Such nodes are often installed in different appliances within an Ambient-intelligence system. In each case there is a joint particle infrastructure, which is reused as-is, but there are varying sensors, actuators and application logic deployed with the particle. This leads to a significant amount of software variability developers are confronted with. The combination of this variability with the complexity of the particle implementation burdens software development activities considerably. In this paper an approach is proposed that reduces the effort of these activities by bringing together model-driven development with product line engineering

Modern metro and particularly core networks consist of multiple layers, where multiple different networking technologies are stacked one over the other. In this paper we assume an IP/MPLS layer over an DWDM layer, both controlled jointly with one vertically integrated GMPLS control plane. To better utilise network resources, smaller, upper-layer traffic streams are multiplexed into higher capacity wavelength paths in distributed way throughout the network. This is referred to as grooming. To make the demands better adapt to changing traffic and network conditions we propose the adaptive multi-layer traffic engineering (AMLTE) that "tailors" i.e., fragments and de-fragments wavelength (lambda) paths in a fully automatic way. Therefore, it adapts very well to changing network and traffic conditions that leads to lower average blocking. In this paper we compare the proposed method to the simple one (that is not adaptive, i.e., has no lambda-path tailoring capability) from two fairness aspects: Bandwidth-Fairness and Distance-Fairness.
