Existing research work on Distributed Hash Tables (DHTs) assume that, prior to actually establishing a DHT, large number potential member nodes would come together at one point and at one place, and would all agree on the characteristics of the DHT to-be-established. This paper presents DHT bootstrapping, which is a novel approach to enable secure, efficient and scalable deployment of DHTs in wireless networks, in particular in wireless networks with time-varying topology. Our solution is not restricted to a particular type of DHT implementation.

This paper presents a modified feature ranking method based on interclass separability for fuzzy modeling. Existing feature selection/ranking techniques are mostly suitable for classification problems. These techniques result in a ranking of the input feature or variables. Our modification exploits an arbitrary fuzzy clustering of the model output data. Using these output clusters, similar feature ranking methods can be used as for classification, where the membership in a cluster (or class) will no longer be crisp, but a fuzzy value determined by the clustering. We propose an iterative algorithm to determine the feature ranking by means of different criterion functions. We examined the proposed method and the criterion functions through a comparative analysis.

In our work, we investigate efficient usage of TTCN-3 (Testing and Test Control Notation version 3) based test components in the emerging field of distributed performance testing of communicating systems. TTCN-3 is a high level formal specification language used for the specification of abstract test suites (ATSs) suitable for various testing purposes mainly in telecommunication systems testing. A TTCN-3 based test system may consist of several distributed parallel test components (PTCs) and can be executed utilizing diverse hardware platforms. Our aim is to aid development of load tests by establishing a framework, while collecting best practices at the same time, that can be used to execute tests over mixed hardware resources efficiently. We, mainly focus on automated and dynamic deployment of load test components implemented purely in TTCN-3. Also, the deployment method takes test system load into account by monitoring the participating workstations' behavior on-line. A potential test method is shown that can be used for testing server applications using low-cost or even legacy hardware as the platform for distributed lest components. A basic scenario involving SMTP (simple mail transfer protocol) service testing is presented as an example.

With the help of a proper performance model and evaluation algorithm, the performance metrics of information systems can be determined at the early stages of the development process. In our work, the response time and the throughput performance metrics of multi-tier Web applications have been predicted based on a queueing model. The goal of our work is to extend the mean-value analysis (MVA) algorithm according to the investigation of the thread pool. Web applications have been tested with concurrent user sessions in order to validate the proposed algorithm in different versions of *** environment. Moreover, error analysis has been performed to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

We show for several planar and geometric problems that the best known approximation schemes are essentially optimal with respect to the dependence on epsi. For example, we show that the 2 O(1/epsi) ldrn time approximation schemes for planar maximum independent set and for TSP on a metric defined bv a planar graph are essentially optimal: if there is a delta>0 such that any of these problems admits a 2 O((1/epsi) 1-delta ) n O(1) time PTAS, then the exponential tune hypothesis (ETH) fails. It is known that maximum independent set on unit disk graphs and the planar logic problems MPSAT. TMIN, TMAX admit n O(1/epsi) time approximation schemes. We show that they are optimal in the sense that if there is a delta>0 such that any of these problems admits a 2 (1/epsi) O(1) n O((1/epsi) 1-delta ) time PTAS, then ETH fails.

Ethernet provides a simple and low-cost solution at high bandwidth for access and metropolitan networks. The failover performance of bridges is indispensable of their applicability. Therefore, new IEEE protocols were developed and deployed in support of fast recovery. Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP) is the current fault handling mechanism for generic topologies, which is included in the standards and implemented in each Ethernet bridge nowadays. There are many different statements about the recovery time of RSTP from the order of seconds down to the order of ten milliseconds. Most of these analyses only rely on simulation results assuming ideal conditions. This paper reports on the performance of RSTP in real environment. It presents an experimental performance analysis of RSTP based on measurement results from test networks comprising Ethernet bridges from various vendors. Basic processing times and hardware delays are deeply analyzed for small topologies and the performance of RSTP is then characterized for larger network topologies.

REHAROB is a robotic system for upper limb physiotherapy including two co-operating robotic arms. The original version of the system included two independent standalone outer-loop force controllers of the two robotic arms. During the manual walk-through programming of the robotic system it was entirely the task of the physiotherapist to consider the human anatomic movements of the upper limb, and ensure the synchronized movement of the two robotic arms. Among other tasks the operator had to contribute actively to overcoming the instabilities caused by the interference of the two separated controls. The authors have modified and upgraded the motion controller of REHAROB to administer the kinematical constraints of the human arm, to which the two robots are connected. This paper presents the new co-operative control method of REHAROB. The method requires no additional sensors or extensive calibration process. The new control concept was implemented and clinically tested. The approach is general and can be extended to any multiple arm lower or upper limb robotic exercising device.

High dynamic range of illumination may cause serious distortions and other problems in viewing and further processing of digital images. In this paper a new tone reproduction preprocessing algorithm is introduced which may help in developing hardly or non-viewable features and content of the images. The method is based on the synthetization of multiple exposure images from which the dense part, i.e. regions having the maximum level of detail are included in the output image. The resulted high quality HDR image makes easier the information extraction and effectively supports the further processing of the image.

This paper presents an application of watchdog based fault detection methods to the supervisory control of an experimental manufacturing cell. Fault detection is implemented by carrying out slight modifications on the previously designed, modular supervisory control architecture, without using additional sensor devices. Different strategies for avoiding fault propagation are also presented.

Though several effective image processing algorithms are created nowadays, their application is often limited by huge computation requirements, making real time operation impossible. Two major issues can be distinguished in license plate number identification, i.e. the localization of the number plate in the picture and the recognition of characters within the identified area. Neither of the tasks mentioned is easy, requiring considerable processing time, but some measurements indicate that finding and extracting characters often takes 20-25 times longer than recognizing them. The localization method introduced in the following are intended to reduce this difference. The paper also introduces wavelet-transformation based solution for efficient storage of cars' pictures.
