Friction is a very old and universal issue in all mechanical systems. Since friction is non-linear, it is an ever challenging problem. Several empirical nonlinear friction models have been proposed in the technical literature. This paper does not propose any new model but it presents a new, tensor product (TP) based representation of the existing friction models which is suitable for control design. The TP model transformation is a relatively new method for transforming certain nonlinear models into polytopic model form. The main advantage of the TP model transformation is that the most of the linear state feedback design methods including Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) can immediately applied to the resulting polytopic models to yield controllers with guaranteed performance.

In designing infocommunications networks the cost of optical ports and links grows in discrete steps as the capacity is being increased. This cost function is referred to as "step function" or "staged capacity cost". If a sequential algorithm is used to design the networks it often results in sub-optimal solution due to the so called "long path problem", where the weighted shortest path algorithms rather choose very long paths where such links are chosen where no additional capacity step (and therefore no additional cost step) has to be made. In this paper we propose and compare methods that perform randomised smoothing of these staged capacity cost functions to allow decomposition of the network design problem to a sequence of weighted shortest path searches, that is the mostly used approach. The problem can be interpreted as an Unsplittable Multi-Commodity Flow Problem with staged capacity costs.

Most of the formal controller synthesis approaches require conditions like controllability, observability of the systems, however it is still difficult to verify these properties in general. In case of polytopic models these conditions and the feasibility of the linear matrix inequalities (LMI) based design strongly depends on the weighting of the LTI vertex components of the polytopic model. With tensor product (TP) model transformation it is possible to decompose linear parameter-varying (LPV) models into polytopic forms in various ways and also provides the appropriate weighting functions. The objective of this paper is to use this decomposition on the the parallel-type double inverted pendulum control problem.

For designing and developing products/services it is vital to know the relevancy of the performance generated by each technical attribute and how they can increase customer satisfaction. Improving the parameters of technical attributes requires financial resources, and the budgets are generally limited. Thus the optimum target is to achieve maximum customer satisfaction within given financial limits. Kano's quality model classifies the relationships between customer satisfaction and attribute-level performance and indicates that some of the attributes have a nonlinear relationship to satisfaction, rather power-function should be used. For the customers' subjective evaluation these relationships are not deterministic and are uncertain. This paper proposes a method for fuzzy extension of Kano's model and presents numerical examples that can prove the efficiency of bacterial evolutionary algorithm in as well.

We have broken EMAP (Efficient Mutual Authentication Protocol), which is a mutual authentication protocol between RFID tags and RFID readers. We give an algorithm, which breaks the protocol after eavesdropping only a few rounds. Assuming that one can eavesdrop a few consecutive rounds of authentications for the same RFID tag (the expected number for the presented algorithm is about 9, but it is possible to reduce this number to about 3.5), the attacker learns the identity number of the tag and every common secret shared by the tag and the reader. This means that in future authentication rounds, the attacker can successfully impersonate the targeted tag. Our breaking procedure is fully passive as opposed to the active attack described in [2].

AnaDig, an IC designed for educational purposes, is described. The teaching goal of the chip is to familiarize the students with the properties of IC devices and basic building blocks. Numerous laboratory experiments are available within the same measurement environment. The temperature dependent characteristics can be obtained. The chip was prototyped and verified.

StoLPaN, a pan-European consortium of companies, universities and user groups co-funded by the European Commission (EU), Information Society Technologies (IST) Programme aims to define open commercial and technical frameworks for the remote management of NFC-enabled services on mobile devices. These frameworks will facilitate the deployment of NFC-enabled mobile applications across a wide range of vertical markets, regardless of the phone type and the nature of the services required. This paper introduces the business aspects of the NFC based service development and the technical infrastructure implementing the core of the NFC-enabled services.

The handling of traffic conflicts of trains is rather complicated if full dynamic models are used. Often it is senseless to take into consideration all details of the motion equations and environmental parameters especially as the main parameters, like maximum speed of the trains involved are not exactly known. Also, a large number of noise type variables are always available. The paper proposes the use of the Mamdani type fuzzy rule based reasoning algorithm for handling railway traffic conflicts. The essential point is the granulation of all important parameters into a relatively small number of categories labeled by terms such as small, large, etc. This way the possible decisions for a concrete traffic conflict situation get various fuzzy weights after accumulation of all the fired rules. The final (non-fuzzy) decision is taken by choosing the option with the largest weight. A simplified example is presented for a delay and overtaking type conflict.

A study on the characterization of small cracks by using eddy current testing (ECT) signal is presented. The significant parameters of the ECT data are selected using principal component analysis according to two approaches. The ECT signal inversion is then achieved using a parametric model trained with synthetic data obtained with a fast numerical simulation tool. The characterization procedure is then tested using experimental data. Results show that information can be obtained concerning the area of the cracks.

J-K flip-flops are elementary digital units providing sequential features/memory functions. Their definitive equation is used both in the minimal disjunctive and conjunctive forms. Fuzzy connectives do not satisfy all Boolean axioms, thus the fuzzy equivalents of these equations result in two non-equivalent definitions, "reset and set type" fuzzy flip-flops (F 3 ) by Hirota et. al. when introducing the concept of F 3 . The paper gives an overview of some of the most famous F 3 -s by presenting their definitions and graphs. An interesting aspect of F -s might be that they have a certain convergent behavior when one of their inputs (e.g. J) is exited repeatedly. This is true even if the other input (K) is kept at a constant value. The behavior is more versatile if both inputs are given a series of changing values. If J is considered the equivalent of the traditional input of a neuron (with an adder unit applied before J), K might play a secondary modifier's role, or can just be set fix. The paper encourages to the investigation of such possible F -networks as new alternative types of neural networks.
