This paper gives an overview of flexible base and joining materials, focusing on their applications and environmental specifications such as applicable temperature and humidity ranges. Mechanical (peel, shear, tear strength) and environmental (moisture absorption, dimensional stability, delamination) tests have been done on the most widely used base film materials (PI, PEN and PET) to determine the influence of processing temperatures on their properties. Three different test boards for mechanical tests, assembly evaluation and reliability tests were designed, built, assembled and evaluated. The joining materials applied for the test structures include traditional SnPb, lead-free and low temperature lead-free solders and different conductive adhesives. This wide range of base and joining materials facilitates their comparison from the reliability point of view.

In this paper we review the progress of an ongoing work which aims at designing and setting up a large-scale open testbed for testing, verification and validation of IPv6-based ITS components. A European Commission partially funded project called ANEMONE provides the ground for the presented architecture by introducing the widest range of access networks and advanced mobility technologies in a pan-European environment.

Technological and computing evolution promoted new opportunities to improve the quality of life, in particular, the quality of diagnostic evaluations. Computerized tomography is one of the imaging equipments of diagnosis which has most benefited from technological improvements. Because of that, and due to the quality of the diagnosis produced, it is one of the most employed equipments in clinical applications. The ischaemic cerebral vascular accident (ICVA) is the pathology that confirms the frequent use of the computerized tomography. The interest for this pathology, and in general for the encephalon image analysis as a preventive diagnosis, is mainly due to the frequent occurrence of ICV As in development countries and its social-economic impact. In this sense, we propose to evaluate the ability of artificial neural networks (ANN) for automatic identification of ICVA by means of tissue density images obtained by computerised tomography. This work employed cranioencephalon computerised tomography exams and their respective medical reports, to train ANNs classifiers. Features extracted from the images were used as inputs to the classifiers. Once the ANNs were trained, the neural classifiers were tested with data never seen by the network. At this stage we may conclude that the ANNs may significantly contribute as an ICV As computerised tomography diagnostic aid, since among the test cases the automatic identification of ischaemic lesions has been performed with no false negatives e very few false positives.

Working in a high risk environment as a nuclear power plant (NPP) is inherently stressful. The teams of front line personnel play a major role in the effective functioning of the organization. Team efficacy does not only depend on the professional knowledge of its members but also on their nontechnical skills. In our present research we emphasize the importance of communication, cooperation and stress management. We video-tape recorded and analyzed the communication of the control room operator teams and investigated specific communication dimensions of the NPP field. We found significant differences in the communication dimensions under high task load. We also proved the effect of familiarity in communication among team members under and after high task load situations.

Since the throughput of the newer wireless networks approaches the general bandwidth of the wired environment thus the number of services, which need higher bandwidth, has increased. Each service has different QoS parameters, throughput preferences and charges. However, various wireless systems (e.g. GSM, UMTS, WLAN, WiMAX) provide different QoS parameters. Therefore we have to choose the suitable radio interface to prove the best quality of a given service. In this paper we introduce our novel network selection model which is based on the AHP and GRA methodology. Considering the user profiles and the available networks' QoS parameters, for a given service the best radio interface can be determined automatically without any user interaction. In a realistic network environment we took some analytical measurements in order to analyze our network selection algorithm. These measurements verify that the algorithm works fine in a realistic network environment.

The current paper is dedicated to present browser-based multimedia-rich software tools and e-learning curriculum to support the design and modeling process of power electronics circuits and to explain sometimes rather sophisticated phenomena. Two projects will be discussed. The so-called Inetele project is financed by the Leonardo da Vinci program of the European Union(EU). It is a collaborative project between numerous EU universities and institutes to develop state-of-the art curriculum in electrical engineering. Another cooperative project with participation of Japanese, European and Australian institutes focuses especially on developing e-learning curriculum, interactive design and modeling tools, furthermore on development of a virtual laboratory. Snapshots from these two projects will be presented.

portable smart devices are getting more and more popular. Many people prefer smart solutions over old devices or pen-and-paper. But developing applications for mobile devices is a challenging task. First, it is difficult to create an intuitive, easy to use interface;second as current mobile platforms are not compatible, the application must be rewritten on all of them. Furthermore it is not trivial to design multimodal interfaces (including speech and graphical I/O) which really improve software usability. For these reasons our goal is to create an XML based scalable, cross platform, multimodal user interface description format and the corresponding interpreter software for different platforms. This technology makes development for mobile devices much faster and easier.

The main problem of the wind power is its stochastic availability. The pulsation of the wind speed causes power pulsation, resulting in deterioration of the power quality. To compensate it, energy storage is necessary. Considering the wind spectrum, different storage systems can be used for the different frequencies of the wind speed variation. The short time turbulent power pulsation can be balanced by flywheel energy storage drive. This paper deals with this method. After the theoretical considerations of the system the possible power circuits and control methods are discussed. The operation of the system is investigated by simulations, using acceptable simplifications. The results help to design the overall system and its elements.

Great amounts of raw data acquired with the use of an innovative mechatronic platform during an extensive clinical trial in a neuro-rehabilitation setting needs an analysis and interpretation. The platform records data from eight 6 DOF force-torque sensors during an isometric functional assessment of post-stroke patients. The identification of preprocessing parameters and onset detection methods, developed thanks to the close collaboration between biomedical engineers and clinicians, is presented in the paper. The present work presents also the implementation and testing of the software for the data pre-processing.

This paper presents simulation results of coverage fluctuation caused by moving rain-cell over the service area of future Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) network applying two types of novelty compared to the common terrestrial BFWA. Because of easy reconfigurability of the network we propose to use satellite backbone concept to feed the base stations of the BFWA system. The second novel aspect in our paper is the application of adaptive base station transmit power allocation as an efficient method against rain fading. To demonstrate the achieved performance of the proposed satellite fed BFWA applying adaptive power allocation comparative results with terrestrial BFWA systems without power adaptation will be introduced.
