The measurement of the nonlinearity characteristics is usually cumbersome. In this paper a simple method is presented for the measurement of some nonlinearity characteristics, i.e. for the AM compression and AM-to-PM conversion. These methods offer easy measurement processes that are widely applicable and do not need special instrumentation. They have another important advantage: the dynamic behavior of the AM compression and AM-to-PM conversion characteristics can also be obtained in a simple way. Using these measurement methods the AM compression and AM-to-PM conversion characteristics of a microwave amplifier have been tested.

The bandwidth of cellular mobile systems is remarkably growing with emerging new network technologies. LTE is a key step towards future high speed cellular networks, but large bandwidth on its own does not fulfill the QoS requirements of real- time multimedia connections. It is more important to guarantee the amount of network resources required by real-time VoIP and video connections. In this paper, we introduce a Ring based Call Admission Control (CAC) Scheme which enables the prediction of the future position of the users thus enhancing CAC decisions. We examined the required number of rings for optimal prediction using analytical methods. Furthermore we present a vector based extension of the newly proposed algorithm.

In recent years mm-wave point-to-point radios appeared among wireless equipment. The large available bandwidth in principle up to 10 GHz - the sparse utilization of the frequency band and efficient spatial filtering make them very advantageous for the backhaul of cellular networks. Present day equipment transmit 1 Gbit/sec over paths of several, about 1 to 3 km-s. The aim of this paper is to briefly present features and applications of these equipments and to discuss development possibilities. Concerning the increase of hop length the already used technique of rate adaptation is analyzed and two diversity techniques are presented. About increase of transmission rate up to 10 Gbit/sec it is shown that simply rescaling the methods used in actual systems is virtually non-viable and more sophisticated methods are needed. Two techniques are proposed and investigated, (i) Spatial demultiplexing of channels is presented; conditions of application are shown, (ii) Possibilities offered by adaptive coding are investigated.

The core of proactive system management is the exploitation of the built-in intelligence of computer infrastructures in order to implement self- ∗ properties for the assurance of a guaranteed quality of service even in the case of faults by reacting to them prior they affect services. The creation of a proper system control policy and implementation is always highly challenging. Modern private and public infrastructures are extremely large; accordingly, fault recovery relies to an increasing extent on rough granular reconfiguration. This way, traditional, discrete representation based fine granular fault handling mechanisms need to be complemented with efficient system level policies using continuous quantitative system models. A continuous observation-learning-policy improvement process is needed to build up and maintain efficient control policies. The most efficient way is the granular refinement of an initial control policy by observing the system behavior under an initial control policy. Subsequently, the improvement of the quality of the control is based on the processing of the basic information collected in the form of logs. Note, that this roundtrip is the only way to cope with the typically rapidly evolving and changing application environments. The presentation will provide an overview on the relation of data acquisition, log processing, modern signal processing and artificial intelligence for knowledge extraction needed to a proper, empirical model based system monitoring and control policy. The basic approaches and tools will be illustrated by a complete example workflow motivated by the recent industry sponsored research projects at BME on large scale infrastructure control.

The aim of the project, described in this paper, is to retrofit a Zeiss length measuring machine for the calibration of linear scales, with a pitch distance of a few micrometers. The retrofitting consists of optics, equipped with a CCD camera, for capturing the line sizes and distances, an appropriate illumination system, a motion system carrying the scale and providing linear motion at constant speed. The paper starts with discussing the various definitions of the pitch distance. From these definitions simple algorithms, to determine the pitch distance, are derived. The main point is to minimize the effect of non-linearity and diffraction, by using appropriate optics and illumination, hereby improving measurement accuracy. The carriage carrying the scale is driven by ultrasonic piezomotor providing nanometer resolution. The displacement is measured by an HP laser interferometer. For higher resolution the CCD camera system can be replaced by a near field microscope.

The lifetime of electronic systems is highly influenced by the quality of the built-in electronic parts, so it is especially important that we could choose from a wide range of parts with the best fit to the conditions of usage. The aim of this paper is to describe what proportion of the die attach of a component will be delaminated beside different conditions. The following factors were taken into account: the physical parameters of the part, the conditions of the assembling and the conditions of the end usage. A test plan was set up with different types of components. Every group of components was separated into subgroups, these subgroups were exposed to different assembling and usage conditions. This test procedure provided information about whether the lead-free reflow process decreases the reliability of the die attach layer.

In this paper an improved method is presented to determine the shear strength of misaligned chip components' solder joints. To calculate the stress inside a solder joint in the case of shear loading, the applied force should be measured and the amount of joined surface (wetted area of the component metallization) should be calculated. Using the method we suggest, first we measured the exact position of the chip component after soldering. After, to determine the accurate value of the joined surface, a 3D profile calculation was carried out taking into consideration the exact position of chip components after soldering. The calculation of the profile was based on the principle of minimum energy. Then, the next stage was to determine the maximum force experimentally that the solder joint was able to withstand before failure in shear. Finite element modeling (FEM) was carried out to determine the stress in the solder joints at that maximum force. Our experiments and FEM investigations proved that the shear strength of misaligned components' solder joints depends on the degree of component misalignment after reflow soldering.

Optical technology offers a new method for generating microwave signals with extremely low noise. For that purpose a long fiber is used in the feedback loop of the oscillator. However, by the application of a long fiber, a lot of resonances appear in the output spectrum impairing the stability of oscillation. This paper introduces two new approaches for improving the frequency stability and reducing the phase noise of opto-electronic oscillators. That goal is achieved in two different ways: one by the insertion of an additional third-harmonic optical loop and another by nonlinear electronic feedback techniques. This way the conversion between the fundamental and harmonic components in the nonlinear active element of the oscillator can be controlled and utilized both for improving the frequency stability and reducing the noise. The combination of these methods results in an optimum adjustment.

Electroplated tin surfaces grow whiskers easily and mechanical loads tend to accelerate this. Our aim was to define how the different kinds of mechanical loads induce the growth of tin whiskers. We have applied 3 types of mechanical loads on component leads covered by either electroplated tin or electroplated tin with silver underlayer. The method of testing was pressing perpendicularly three types of heads on the two types of layers, all equally with 3 N force for 400 hours. These types of head shapes were: spear (60°), pointed (30°), round (r = 250 ¿m). The observed results have shown that different mechanical defects induce the growth of whiskers in different ways and using underlayers have also changed the amount of whiskers grown on the surface in case of using the same needle shape and force.

The investigation of the forced convection heating efficiency in reflow soldering environment and its necessity was presented in our paper. The calculations are based on the mass stream changes on the surface of the circuit, which have high impact on the convection constant. But all important stream variables (scalar space of the density, vector space of the speed, rotation etc.) were studied. The properties of the stream are studied separately: first until it reaches the circuit (laminar phase), then it reaches the circuit and the stream becomes radial (transition phase), and finally the stream on the surface of the circuit (radial phase). From the aspect of the forced convection efficiency the arrangement and the size of the components have high importance, so these circumstances are also taken into consideration. Finally, it was proven that the convection constant and the efficiency of force convection heating can be changed from side to side on the components. This effect can cause reflow soldering failures.
