This paper presents a new QRS complex detection algorithm that can be applied in various on-line ECG processing systems. The algorithm is performed in two steps: first a wavelet transform filtering is applied to the signal, then QRS complex localization is performed using a maximum detection and peak classification algorithm. The algorithm has been tested in two phases. First the QRS detection in ECG registrations from the MIT-BIH database has been performed, which led to an average detection ratio of 99.5%. Then, the algorithm has been implemented into a microcontroller-driven portable Holter device

The knowledge of human walking behavior has primary importance for mobile agent in order to operate in the human shared space, with minimal disturb of other humans. This paper introduces such an observation and learning framework, which can acquire the human walking behavior from observation of human walking, using CCD cameras of the intelligent space. The proposed behavior learning framework applies fuzzy-neural network to approximate observed human behavior, with observation data clustering in order to extract important training data from observation. Preliminary experiment is shown to demonstrate the merit of the introduced behavior

The main contribution of this paper is a robust and precise position control method based on sliding mode for a pneumatic cylinder. The controller is implemented on a DSP system. The main challenge is the higher accuracy than 10 mum, which can be ensured with wide range of variation of the load (disturbance) and pressure in the entire operation area. The paper describes the nonlinear model of the pneumatic cylinder and the three main design steps of the proposed control method, namely sliding surface design, control law selection and chattering free implementation. Finally, it presents experimental results

The phonocardiographic monitoring of fetal heart activity due to its passive nature enables extremely long measuring times providing thus the possibility of fetal breathing recovery. The long monitoring time is required because of the temporary appearing of breathing movement. However, the long measurement time and consequently the large amount of data to be transmitted to the hospital's computer centre may be costly on mobile phone network. To keep monitoring costs low an appropriate data compression should be applied assuring the transmission of all important features of the detected acoustic signal. The present work summarizes the results of the extension of the novel telemedicine system with measurement of breathing periodicity and the achieved compression level of acquisited data. The Golomb-Rice compression is applied for lossless transmission of the segmented beat cycles considering the importance of the given segments in order to obtain the most accurate transfer of beat-to-beat time and all irregular heart sounds

This paper reports the modeling, identification, and control of harmonic drives in a novel configuration where all its shafts are allowed to move. This makes possible to solve a control problem where one applies two actuators in order to carry out simultaneous position and torque control on two different axes of the harmonic drive. Physical parameters used during the MIMO controller synthesis partially come from a 3D CAD model (inertial parameters) and others (frictional parameters) are obtained by an identification procedure using measurement data recorded on a rapid prototyping test bench

In infocommunications networks the amount of free network resources varies in time significantly. Furthermore, after a network failure a large amount of backup paths are built up and later torn down. To achieve the highest possible network throughput and availability while keeping the loss of data low and guaranteeing fairness, the bandwidth (rate) of sources should be adjusted accordingly in an elastic way. After a complex network failure the path of the demand should be changed (re-routed) as well as its bandwidth likely decreased. Existing papers study the case when the traffic matrix is given in advance and centralized management is assumed. In contrast to these we investigate the case of on-line (i.e., dynamic) routing when unpredictable backup or new demands arrive in an unforeseen sequence. For this purpose instead of the centralized management we use distributed control. We propose flexible methods that determine the bandwidth of elastic sources and the routes used by these demands simultaneously. We evaluate the algorithms according to the obtained blocking ratios, network utilization and computational time. We show that they yield lower blocking ratio and higher network utilization than conventional shortest path methods

A novel compact method for fetal home monitoring optimized for long data acquisition time and low communication costs is presented. The method incorporates the preprocessing of disturbed acoustic signal received on the maternal abdomen. The basic idea of the preprocessing is that the detection of the systolic and diastolic sounds takes place on two separated frequency bands with autocorrelation on predicted time intervals. Measurements on 47 selected pregnant women have shown that the use of this method significantly reduces the amount of data to be transferred to the computer centre in the hospital, where only the very disturbed time periods have to be evaluated. Based on this method a new, phonocardiographic fetal telemedicine system can be built without time limitation of measurements
