A wireless ambulatory ECG system with an Internet based telemedicine service was developed by the authors. Some new solutions of all the three main aids - remote sensing, decision making, and the patients' real time management - of a telemedicine solution were applied. Using more sophisticated math analysis - wavelet for heart rate variability and ventricular late potentials, correlation dimension, data mining with piecewise aggregate approximation (PAA) - the indication of conventional ambulatory (Holter) registrations was expanded. The well-defined indications of Holter monitoring do not permit to extend the applications to a greater population for cardiovascular risk prediction. This "inflexibility" was changed with a rapid, frequent Internet ECG monitoring of our HeartSpy, heart observer systems. The clinical studies were performed in various patients' groups to predict the recurrence of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and the occurrence of malignant ventricular arrhythmias and/or sudden cardiac death. The analysis showed some promising results in the prediction of these two diseases, where the conventional methods have only a poor prognostic value

In this paper an advanced framework for minimum interference routing is proposed, which, despite its universal nature, is best suited for traffic engineering in optical networks. Minimum interference routing is a method for engineering network resources to minimize the interference among high-volume traffic sources, in an attempt to maximize the useful throughput of the network. The main motivation behind the proposed framework Is a more advanced way of defining the "interference" between routes. This promotes the allocation of light-paths in an optical network without presuming any knowledge of future requests. The basic idea is that network links are classified into distinct criticality classes and additional capacity is defined for each criticality class. This additional capacity represents the amount of additional traffic that can be routed on those links, without increasing the network-wide interference. We provide a concise mathematical formula for class-based interference and propose a polynomial time heuristic to derive criticality classes. Based on our findings a flexible path selection scheme called MIRO is introduced. Finally, through extensive simulation studies, we show that the class-based interference framework more thoroughly describes link criticality than traditional methods, which transforms into more efficient routing in optical transport networks.

The speed of device discovery in Bluetooth can be unacceptably low when a higher number of Bluetooth nodes are in radio range simultaneously. In this paper we propose a practically feasible and fast alternative to the standard device discovery and link establishment protocol. The new algorithm is symmetric, and does not separate the inquiry and page phases. It causes significantly lower interference, provides better support for scatternet formation algorithms, and guarantees a reliable setup of links. Our simulation results show that for large numbers of Bluetooth devices in radio range, it operates up to 300 times faster than inquiry while consuming only 20% of power

An expert system was developed basically for the phonocardiographic (PCG) monitoring in the coronary care unit and at home. The aim of the study was to examine the performance of wavelet transformation in a heart failure group with noisy environment. For detection and interpretation of heart sounds and murmurs two analysis methods were done. As first, with the waveform similarity overlap-and-add (WSOLA) algorithm, a better separation of sounds was achieved for determination of the gold standard to the cardiologist interpretors. For the time-frequency analysis of PCG signals in a special clinical settings (PCG monitoring of 52 heart failure patients (NYHA III-IV) with ejection fraction<0.35), various wavelets were compared to an autoregressive (AR) model to determine the better model. As a result the Morlet wavelet wave showed the best performance, so it will be used for the future in our PCG data-, and knowledge-base

In the presented paper, dynamic state analysis and control aspects of recycle processes are discussed. Analysis of process dynamic behaviour and investigation of influence of process recycle loop parameters onto the overall plant is carried out. A new strategy of compensation of the recycle effects is introduced as a combination of direct compensator part and adaptive gain scheduling technique such that the compensator eliminates the recycle path dynamics only while recycle gain is scheduled in adaptive mode. A hybrid separation process, based on extractive heterogeneous-azeotropic distillation (EHAD), consisting of a 4 column distillation plant, is considered as case study

The idea that is discussed in this paper is a possible solution, which allows that the shared capacity oriented restoration scheme can be tailored according to the recovery time requirement of the delay sensitive applications, thus the efficient resource usage can be optimized under a recovery time constraint. This paper seems to be interesting, especially as an introduction for people that would approach the problem of recovery time constraints in resilient networks and also for showing the relationship between the amount of additional resource allocation needed by the restoration and the recovery time constraint fulfillment. This paper gives simple analytical models for the implementation options of the optical control plane signaling, shows some reference linear programming formulations for different resilience strategies and finally shows some illustrative numerical comparisons to support the aforementioned efforts.

Physical impairments in both metropolitan optical networks (MON) and long haul optical networks (LHON) often influence the signal quality, therefore a proper routing decision is needed. In this paper we investigate how to design traffic grooming optical virtual private networks (oVPN), over WDM (CWDM or DWDM) networks, while obeying the properties of the physical layer. Although we obtain these limiting properties using simulations, actual measurements can be used as well. Optimization was achieved by integer linear programming (ILP) (T. Cinkler, February 2001), where the physical limitations are represented using a set of new variables and constraints. Since the problem is NP hard, we decompose it using heuristics into multiple, less complex, sub-problems. The proposed method is illustrated in a case study.

The paper is devoted for a systematic discussion on the subspace based identification methods. The structure of the noise components acting additively at various system signals is considered as the guiding principle for the analysis of the estimation algorithms. It is shown that replacing the state space approach typically applied in this field by a discrete time transfer function system realization the highly involved machinery of the subspace algorithms can be handled in a clearly ordered framework exhibited by a set of over-determined equations to be solved.

This paper presents new accurate packet error rate analysis of ALOHA type networks that employ BPSK or QPSK modulation in a Rayleigh fading environment. Relying on a precise interference model, we derive new accurate expressions for the packet success probabilities that account for bit to bit error dependence, and are valid for unequal power levels. The accuracy of the new expressions is validated by simulation. These results are used to investigate the throughput performance of Aloha type networks in different local area environments
