Time encoding is a mechanism for representing the information contained in a continuous time, bandlimited, analog signal as the zero-crossings of a binary signal. Time decoding algorithms have been developed that make a perfect recovery of time encoded bandlimited signals possible. We consider a simple one-opamp active RC implementation of the time encoder and investigate the robustness in performance of the time decoder when the former is subject to non-idealities of the analog VLSI realization. We show that up to a constant scaling factor, delay and offset the input signal can be accurately reconstructed even if the opamp has a finite DC gain and finite bandwidth and the circuit exhibits parameter offsets. We develop an experimental upper bound for the reconstruction error that can be used in the design of the encoder. The analytical results are verified with numerical simulations.

The utilization of the free capacity by the TCP congestion control is not perfect due to the complex fluctuations of the background traffic resulting in reduced throughput. Different frequency components of the background traffic have different effects on the TCP performance. In this paper we present a comprehensive TCP performance evaluation study to understand the nature of the TCP adaptivity mechanism in frequency domain. Through simulations we analyze the impact of network parameters and also some alternatives for compensation of the throughput reduction. Finally, based also on the analysis of measured TCP traffic we investigate the robustness of TCP to fluctuations occur in actual network traffic.

This work is focused on exploring the possibilities of multilayer recording approach in holographic data storage. The critical feature of multilayer storage is Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). The goal is to develop a suitable numerical model for the estimation of the noises arising from inter-layer and inter-hologram crosstalk, applicable for bit-oriented microholograms written in a thick photopolymer layer. In microholographic data storage the write laser beam is strongly focused into a photosensitive, recording material and then focused back from a mirror on the opposite side of the sample. Consequently, microholograms are created by two counterpropagating, highly focused beams. Recording with such focused beams results in a volume-localized refractive index modulation of a microhologram. For readout, the probe beam is scattered by the hologram.

Implemented in the 1990s, the MPEG-2 standard as one of today's most widely used image compressing methods provides the basis for baseband data transmission in DVB technology. However, the requirements of the current multimedia applications exceed the capabilities of MPEG-2 systems. On the other hand, these requirements are the driving forces of the MPEG-4 related developments worldwide. Our aim is to contribute to these activities by elaborating procedures that are more effective than the image compressing methods used in MPEG-2 systems, as well as by integrating them into DVB systems

Anytime signal processing algorithms are to improve the overall performance of larger scale embedded digital signal processing (DSP) systems. In such systems there are cases where due to abrupt changes within the environment and/or the processing system temporal shortage of computational power and/or loss of some data may occur. It is an obvious requirement that even in such situations the actual processing should be continued to insure appropriate performance. This means that signal processing of somewhat simpler complexity should provide outputs of acceptable quality to continue the operation of the complete embedded system. The accuracy of the processing will be temporarily lower but possibly still enough to produce data for qualitative evaluations and supporting decisions. In this paper a new anytime Fourier transformation algorithm is introduced. The presented method reduces the delay problem caused by the block-oriented fast algorithms and at the same time keeps the computational complexity on relatively low level. It also makes possible the availability of partial results or estimates in case of abrupt reaction need, long or possibly infinite input data sequences.

This paper provides a compact mathematical formulation for shared protection in communication networks with bandwidth guaranteed tunnels. The formulation is characterized by taking the most general definition of the shared risk group (SRG) with the complete routing information in the single failure scenario, which can facilitate solving the shared path protection problem on various network topologies and various graph models of networks. The general SRGs are essential for survivable routing in multi-layer grooming networks as well as in multi-domain networks. With the formulation, a general approach and a unified expression for solving the dynamic survivable routing problem can be developed. A case study is given at the end to verify the proposed formulation on a well studied special case, namely protecting against a single node or a single link failure.

Sensor networks are large scale networks of low-power devices that collaborate in order to perform a given task. The sensors are limited in battery energy, capacity and computational power. In recent years, researchers have proposed several protocols for such sensor networks assuming that all sensors belong to the same authority. In this paper, we introduce the concept of multidomain sensor networks that was, to the best of our knowledge, never considered before. We propose a game-theoretic model to investigate the impact of cooperation and show the conditions for which cooperation is the best strategy.

The aim of this paper is to provide measurement results of data transmission over symmetrical DSL out of all DSL technologies. The paper looks at the symmetrical services with virtual private network (VPN) connections, security and end-to-end quality of service (QoS), thus offering a guideline to service providers and end-users to select the services that best suite their needs. CPEs based on the symmetrical DSL technology are widely deployed, however there are no published results of their performance measurements. Our aim is to fill these gaps, as the work of benchmarking DSL modems with different protocol stacks is of interest to network operators. This article reports upon benchmarking results, i.e., presents a series of measurement results of five CPEs using symmetrical DSL lines for connection to the central office. Throughput, IP packet latency and IP packet-loss statistics of these transceivers are analyzed and compared. Bridged, routed, and PPP configurations are investigated in details. The overhead due to L2TP tunneling, IP security and encryption is measured in case of one modem. FTP file transfer performance is shown for all different protocol stacks. Finally, the maximum distance (loop reach rate) vs. line transmission rate is also indicated for each tested equipments.
