A model of the development of an accident situation involving construction scaffolding

On the basis of conducted research and the analysis of occupational accidents that involved scaffolding, a model of the development of an accident situation in the form of a directed graph was developed. The model was used to analyse 187 accidents that occurred in 5 Polish voivodeships in the years from 2010 to 2017. Based on the analysis of the set of accidents, the critical path in the graph was determined and the most dangerous events related to work on scaffolding were specified.

An approach is considered that allows one to make a decision on the choice of compositions of composite materials that have been exposed to temperature changes for a long time. The alternatives are considered – compositions of materials and special criteria, the analysis of which underlies the optimal choice of composition from the group under consideration. Proposed the formation of criteria by which the decision is made to assess the quality of building composite materials. In this article, the criteria are formed on the basis of such properties of building materials as hardness and modulus of elasticity on the surface of the test samples, which were subject to negative and positive temperature extremes. Criteria for each property of the sample are formed on the basis of the given values relative to the starting point of exposure. To make a decision about the quality of composite materials, it is proposed to form three criteria for each of the considered properties of materials. The first criterion is calculated as a change in the corresponding property relative to the initial exposure point. The second criterion is determined sequentially with respect to each exposure point by a change in each of the considered properties. The third criterion is represented as the sum of the first two criteria. After that, some provisions of the ELECTRE methods are applied for ranking the studied compositions of composite materials.

We describe the development and evaluation of a virtual steel sculpture for engineering education. A good connection design requires the engineer to have a solid understanding of the mechanics and steel behavior. To help students better understand various connection types, many schools have acquired steel sculptures. A steel sculpture is a physical system that shows 48 types of connection found in standard construction practices. Unfortunately, because of its size and location, students do not always have easy access to it. The virtual sculpture described in the article can provide an effective learning alternative. It allows the students to see the sculpture from multiple points of view anywhere, anytime and shows the close-up view of each connection with description of how it may be used, potential failure modes, sample calculations, and field examples. Findings from a formative study with engineering students support the pedagogical efficacy of the interactive sculpture.

Usually, 80% of running costs of a building are influenced by 20% of initial costs. Therefore concerns for running cost need to begin at the outset of building design. A simplified model that could predict running cost from early project phase would facilitate design development and give due consideration to life cycle costing (LCC) accuracies. Historical data on running cost for office buildings are inconsistent in Sri Lanka and affect prediction accuracies. However the current research proposes a model using simple variables to facilitate the prediction of running cost of office buildings in Sri Lanka. The study uses a mixed method approach to collect data through eight semi-structured interviews and analyses of eight office building documents. The model developed was subsequently validated using another set of eight buildings. The analyses show that operation and maintenance cost account for 75% and 25% to total running cost respectively. Major operational cost comprise utility and administration, while maintenance comprise cleaning and building services. The model primarily depends on average floor area and number of floors. These parameters are responsible for over 98% of the model accuracy and could provide a speedy and accurate estimation of running cost for office buildings.

The paper reports a study that investigated the effect of egocentric versus exocentric view in an educational animation whose goal was to teach undergraduate students the various tasks that a construction manager performs in the field. Specifically, the study aimed to determine the effect of perspective view on students’ subject learning and preference. Findings show that while students have a preference on perspective view, the perspective view does not have a significant effect on students’ learning outcomes. © Institute for computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2014.

A measurement model of building information modelling maturity

Purpose - There is a growing requirement for a rating system of building information modelling maturity (BIMM) to compare the effectiveness of modelling processes in construction projects. The literature related to BIMM contains theoretical proposals and description of their maturity models. However, the research efforts are limited and lacking substantial theoretical and empirical justifications. This paper is a unique attempt to integrate previous models by performing empirical investigations of key factors for measuring BIMM in construction projects. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - A national survey was designed to extract the perception of 124 BIM-related practitioners and academicians about the conceptual model. Then, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were employed to identify and test the key factors underlying the 27 areas. Findings - A principal component factor analysis of the collected data had suggested a five-factor model, which explained 69.839 per cent of the variance. The construct validity of the model was further tested by confirmatory factor analysis. The results indicated that all factors were important in measuring BIMM;however, compared with the factors of technology and people, more emphasis was put on the factors of process and information. Originality/value - The key value of the paper is to increase the understanding of multi-dimension nature of BIMM through empirical evidence and to provide practitioners and researchers with the insight regarding particular emphasis on the factors related to modelling process and information. This paper presents ongoing research aimed at improving building sustainability education through the use of serious games. With the growth of the population worldwide and the increased demand on resources, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable buildings. As architects, engineers and construction professionals are educated for the future, the complex area of building sustainability must be included in the curriculum;however, the literature shows no clear consensus on teaching methods or curriculum design. Growing evidence suggests that computer games could be effective tools in construction education as they can provide students with both theoretical and applied knowledge. In this paper we describe the development and initial evaluation of a serious game for learning sustainable building design principles and practices. The game is aimed at undergraduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering, Architecture and building construction management programs. Findings from a formative study with 17 students and three faculty show that the game was perceived as usable, engaging and useful for learning/teaching building sustainability. Results of a summative study with 42 undergraduate students show that playing the game led to an increase in subjects' declarative knowledge by 22% and procedural knowledge by 37%. Compared with traditional learning methods, playing the game led to significantly higher procedural knowledge gains, whereas gains in declarative knowledge were not significantly higher. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

In this paper, we describe the development of an interactive virtual environment whose objective is to improve undergraduate students' representational fluency in surveying mathematics. One problem with teaching surveying is a general decline in the math skills of students taking surveying courses, and a decline in the students' ability to transfer these concepts into practice in the context of surveying. In the paper, we explain how an interactive virtual environment that presents multiple interconnected representations of math and geometry concepts - dynamic visual objects, symbolic or numeric expressions, and written and verbal explanations simultaneously on the computer screen - can help students acquire the math and geometry skills necessary to perform surveying tasks such as chaining and triangulations and coordinate calculations. © ASCE 2014.

This paper presents ongoing research aimed at improving surveying education through the use of virtual environments. Teaching surveying presents several challenges such as low student competence in mathematics, geometry and trigonometry, limited student access to instruments, limited availability of terrains on which to practice, dependency on weather conditions, and more. Prior research suggests that surveying education can be significantly improved with the use of digital teaching aids and virtual instruments. The goal of the work reported in the paper is to enhance traditional surveying instruction methods with a unique approach: an interactive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that supports students' mathematical representational fluency and includes realistic virtual terrains and surveying instruments that look, operate, and produce results comparable to the physical ones. The VLE is aimed at undergraduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering, Architecture and building construction management programs and includes 5 educational modules, in this paper we describe the design, development and initial evaluation of the 'Triangulations and Coordinates Calculations' module. © 2013 IEEE.
